I would like to emphasize that if you are planning on making furniture painting a regular part of your DIY life, a paint sprayer is a good investment that will save you time in the long run and give you the best finish possible. You could try renting one from Home Depot to try it out before you commit, or even if you just want to use it once! If you know other people who like to DIY, you could always see if you could borrow one too.

Does painting textured wooden ikea furniture work well? I have the brown almost wood grain textured Billy bookcases and wanted to try painting them. Have you had any success paining this kind of item? Does it look good? Or is it better to replace them with the white smooth bookcases?

So now, I get to pass on all the juicy details I acquired along the way that hopefully no one will sue me over for sharing. So that you can make the best, most informed buying decisions on your furniture-buying journey.

I started waxing a project back in the winter. I ran out of wax and life caught up with me. Now that I have a little more free time, I got the dark wax to finish my project. I asked the stockist if I needed to reapply the clear wax since it had sat so long and she thought I was fine to go ahead with the dark wax. It appears a lot darker than I really want. Is there anyway to fix this on my piece? Would you recommend putting a fresh coat of clear wax on before the dark? I have the rest of the cabinet to finish. Thanks!

Even better than just adding stuffing, occasionally take out the entire fiber-wrapped foam insert (carefully). Flip it over and swap the side of the sofa it is on (just flip the middle cushion). I like to lay mine flat on the floor for a little bit to let it flatten out. Make sure the stuffing is in place, and carefully insert the cushions back into the covers. Your sofa will look new. This keeps the sides wearing evenly, and you won't have to keep adding as much stuffing. I do the same thing with the bottom cushions, and wash the covers on the gentle cycle as well. Dry on a low heat, flip and swap the inserts and you won't believe how great your furniture will look.Your reader who had the small overhanging cushion should also be able to unzip and flip her cushion. I'd flip it front to back as well as side to side if possible.I grew up in a furniture store, so I thought everybody knew about the zippers on furniture until I got older :) I remove and flip our inserts every year or two because our cat likes to sleep up there. I spot test and vacuum it really well when the inserts are removed. When I want new furniture, I have always been able to resell our old furniture because it still looks so good and the $ goes toward the new things!

How you prep the pieces you find is the most important step in the process. It affects the final product and how much profit you can make. Why? Because the furniture you invest in will come in different styles, designs, and conditions. And most of the time, not in the best of conditions.

How does the paint cover? Do you need multiple thin coats, one thick coat, etc. This is a BIG deal in the painting world. As much fun as painting is, as a refinisher, we really want as much coverage per coat as possible. This makes the refinishing process quicker!

Thanks so much, Cindy! I loved the black too and honestly, it looked really good with the shutters and the color of the house. The whole thing just made for a very elegant entry. But over time the pollen just got to be too bad so we had to paint it white again. One day I would love to have a sunroom with black wicker furniture. It would be so pretty! Hugs, CoCo

If the mesh is more vinyl-like and you want to to give it a try, go over the mesh with 100 grit sandpaper to rough up the surface just as you would if painting wood furniture. Wash the chairs well with bleach and hot sudsy water. Let dry for a few hours.

I really love how your table and chairs turned out, looks like a brand new set. I love painting older furniture to give it a new look. I recently bought a bed for my daughter at an estate sale for $10 and repainted it. I was inspired by this article and others I have seen on Pinterest. Thanks for your ideas!!

So I have old hotel furniture that has that plastic fake Shiny looking laminate. I actually want to turn this into mirrored furniture. Should I peel off the laminate and glue mirror or just sand down the laminate and glue the mirror?

Also, could I use something like Miniwax Polyshades over the sanding that I have already done? Or am I going to have to paint it now? My other bedroom furniture is very dark wood and I just want it to look nice together. thanks.

I have an old secretary type desk/dresser (three drawers and a pull down cabnet/desk at the top. I have had it since i was in 8th grade and i am 55 now. I always assumed it was wood. But I decided I wanted to darken it to match my other bedroom furniture and started to sand it a little by hand. To my surprise I dont think any part of this piece of furture is wood. Some places I may have sanded down a little too far. Im stuck and dont know what to do now. The very top of it is different. very glossy shiny .. help

Very cool idea. I keep some rooms closed in the house to keep the pets out. When you open the door the smell of closed off room hits you. I really want to try this in there. I mean what harm can it really do?!?

Vodka! Wipe down the furniture with vodka then let it dry. If you want a scent, mix a few drops vanilla extract into the vodka. I have used this trick many times. An antique dealer told me about it years ago.

You can also sand the inside of the drawers. That really helps. My husband got a couple of pieces from his grandmothers stinky smelly smokey-o house and sanded the insides and it was gone. Also a refinisher told my mom sometimes the best thing to do is poly urethane the inside and seal the smell in.

Jeff has this desk and uses it for the 1 day he works from home. He has 2 large monitors for conference calls sitting on top of the desk at all times plus a laptop so the large size was really important. If we were going to have a desk this size in the house I wanted it to blend into the walls and not stand out so we chose the white. So glad. He loves the drawers and the piece is perfect.

Thank you kristy for this detailed description of the products you have purchased from RH. We are considering RH for a living room makeover and are apprehensive to take the dive. We have RH dining room, and bedroom night tables and dresser, and love them. AT the moment, i despise our sofa and cannot wait to let it go. Our furniture is about sixteen years old with ware and tear after kids, that are now grown. We are looking at linen. We do not want a soft sofa. We would like a sofa that supports getting up and down but comfortable. Have you any information you can share since you are in the area of a RH store. We are not near a store. After so much research into furniture, i gravitate back to RH for their style and variety, and satisfaction with the pieces we have so far.

Thank you for a thorough review. We are considering purchasing our first piece of RH furniture and our first platform bed. We certainly have many concerns. We wonder how many slats come with the RH bed and what is the best mattress for a platform bed. We also wonder if we will rest as well without having box springs. Also, we wondered if the RH furniture is good quality but your review erased this concern. We are considering a linen and velvet RH fabric for the platform bed-any thoughts which might hold up best. We would appreciate any information you might provide.

Hi Kristy, Thanks for this wonderful blog. I really liked reading your detailed review. We recently purchased our first RH furniture: Cayden nightstands, unfortunately the wax finish from the stands came off after a month of use. Do you have any recommendations on durability of a particular finish on their products? Oak is wire brushed with a sealed wax finish.

My Thanks to you as well. I have been very frustrated in the past by being able to find a store that can offer real and quality furniture. I keep getting fed the line by many sales people that (overpriced) composite material is better and last longer. I just want well made furniture of solid wood, even if it does cost a little more. I have not shopped at RH before, but your article gives me the confidence to go in knowing what to expect.

Hi Kristy,

I am considering the Maison bedroom furniture in antique grey oak. In your post the Maison vanity looks grey which is what I want, but the swatch samples look more brown in the pictures. Can you confirm the true color please. It looks different in every post I see!

Thank you!

What did you decide on the Maison bedroom furniture? I am also trying to decide on it for the master bedroom in the gray oak. And what pieces did you get? I want to get 2 nighstands and either the 6 drawer dresser or the 5 drawer chest.

There are some down sides and I think you need to consider 'em. When we do a regular fixed leg, an all wood leg, on the bottom of that leg is a little plastic cap. It's called a glider. And what it will do is give you protection on your floor. So, if somebody plops down on the sofa and it moves around a little bit, it's not gonna cause a scratch. It's gonna give you a little bit of protection. It's also gonna make it relatively easy to sort of slide that furniture around a bit if you need to 'cause it's not gonna stick too much. If you're dealing with carpet, it's kind of a non-issue, right. It's a pressure point, a caster, or a little plastic pad, either way, it's gonna be a pressure point on the carpet so it's kind of six of one, half dozen of the other. But for wood floors, I think, it's an important consideration. That brass metal leg, the wheel, is potentially a source of trouble. It can scratch a floor. I haven't seen it do too much damage, in my experience, but there's that potential and, depending on the hardness of your floors, and how protected they are, you might wanna think about that. I've had a house that had really kind of soft, wood floors in it. I would not put a caster leg on a sofa in that environment because it would totally scuff it up and cause indentations and be all kinds of trouble. 589ccfa754
