Human action recognition (HAR) is widely studied computer vision problem and it has many valuable applications in computer vision such as human-computer interaction, video surveillance, electronic entertainment, health care, patient monitoring, nursing homes, smart homes etc. The advancement of human action recognition emerged constantly due to the advancement of the imaging techniques and the upgradation of the camera devices. Different human gestures can be distinguished from the movement of the human skeleton. The meaning of three words, viz. gesture, action and activity are very nearer to each other. Basically, gestures signify elementary movements of human body parts to describe meaningful motions of human body. Composition of multiple gestures of a single person activity makes an action. However, it is a challenging task to recognize actions accurately due to cluttered backgrounds, occlusions, and viewpoint variations, etc. Some of the classical and the state-of the-art approaches for human action recognition are Histogram of Optical Flow (HOF), Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG), Space-Time Interest Points (STIP), Motion Interchange Patters (MIP), dense trajectories, etc. The extension of these features to other systems are not very easy as these approaches are difficult and time consuming. Different tasks are applied to determine the large-part of hand-design features and they may enforce different features. In real life, feature selection is very much problem dependent as features are task specific. Uncertainty, imprecision, vagueness etc. are some of criteria of these types of real life human action recognition problems.
The conventional paradigms may not be the accurate solution to figure out these types of problems. The latest intelligent computing paradigms using soft computing tools are expected to offer better solutions to handle these types of solutions. Computational intelligence will provide the solution platform to handle these issues to a considerable extent. The field of computational intelligence furnishes the computing paradigm which faithfully resolves the uncertainties prevalent in the rapidly evolving computing arena.
The proposed book would come to the benefits of several categories of students and researchers. At the students' level, this book can serve as a treatise/reference book for the special papers at the masters level aimed at inspiring possibly future researchers. Newly inducted PhD aspirants would also find the contents of this book useful as far as their compulsory coursework is concerned.
At the researchers' level, those interested in research would also be benefited from the book. After all, the enriched interdisciplinary contents of the book would always be a subject of interest to the faculties, existing research communities and new research aspirants from diverse disciplines of the concerned departments of premier institutes across the globe. This is expected to bring different research backgrounds (due to its cross platform characteristics) close to one another to form effective research groups all over the world. Above all, availability of the book should be ensured to as much universities and research institutes as possible through whatever graceful means it may be.
