So, as we celebrate her birthday, I selected, instead, a graph of the plain and simple evidence that Florence Nightingale gathered in the study that only she could have conducted; a comparison of the wounded soldier mortality rate before nurses arrived at the field hospital in the Crimean to the wounded soldier mortality rate about a year after Nightingale nurses began staffing that same field hospital.

Our passion for caring, our drive for improving patient lives and most importantly, our engagement with the care delivery system remains strong. Despite adversity, nurses continue to engage with patients, team members, hospital leaders and the profession.

Considering these increases in morbidity and mortality, National Nurses Week provides an opportune moment for those of us in the nursing profession to reflect on the overall health and wellbeing of our nation and our role as nurses in redesigning and improving the traditional models of health services. Given that nurses provide most care both in the United States and worldwide, our insights are key to transforming the currently unsustainable, ineffective, and cost-prohibitive model of U.S. health care.

Many existing practical frameworks for understanding and addressing the impact of SDOH have focused on identifying broad domains of health-related influences (such as income or access to community resources) instead of the dynamic and multifaceted mechanisms that ultimately affect health outcomes and inequities. There has also been little consideration paid to how nurses and other health professionals can effectively mitigate harmful SDOH in clinical practice.

Unions representing nurses have long warned about the problem facing the profession, said National Nurses United President Deborah Burger and President of SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Jane Hopkins. Both women are also RNs.

But even before the pandemic, the younger generation had signaled they were done with nursing, Hopkins said. "First and second year nurses were leaving the profession at a higher rate because it's not what they expected. This escalated during the pandemic," she said.

In January, around 7,000 nurses in New York went on strike over a contract dispute with hospitals in the city. The nurses were looking for higher wages and better working conditions. This strike forced several hospitals to divert patients elsewhere.

From the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, this is Road to Resilience, a podcast about overcoming adversity. I'm Jon Earle. It's National Nurses Week, and this year with the pandemic, we're especially grateful for our nurses. Those of us away from the front lines can never fully understand what it's been like for them. But we can try, and I think by trying we gain a fuller appreciation of what we're celebrating when we celebrate Nurses Week. And we're also reminded of the importance of supporting our nurses who've done so much for us. For this episode, we spoke to eight nurses from across the Mount Sinai Health System. They shared their stories from the pandemic and their reflections on what it means to be a nurse. The following is an audio collage of what they told us. I hope you enjoy it.

Madeline Hernandez, RN: 06:55

It's hard to think of myself as being a hero when I'm doing something that I feel needs to be done. Like I wouldn't think twice about not taking care of my patient because of COVID-19. It's my job. And I know that a lot of the nurses have felt that way. They're calling us a hero, and we appreciate that people are appreciating us, but this is what we do. This is our job. And we go in there every day taking care of our patients not knowing what to expect. And we go and we give it our all.

Hoda Farghaly, RN: 13:09

At Mount Sinai Queens, every time a patient's discharged, "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles is played over the loudspeaker. And you just look at everyone's faces, and their mood just immediately changes, and it's just a happy and positive moment, and it keeps all of us going.

This week, our theme is calling. Chamberlain University Provost Carla D. Sanderson, PhD, RN, FAAN, kicks off the week with her thoughts and reflections on the shared calling that connects nurses worldwide.

This one week is insufficient time to appreciate all of the nurses who showed their love, kindness, caring demeanour, and polite bedside manners for others. This week concludes with the commemoration of International Nurses Day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, one of the coolest nurses in human history. So, here are some phrases, comments, and notes that you may share with all of the nurses to make this day especially special for all of them.
