It's no secret Google is pulling the plug on Hangouts, and even though its death has been chaotic, the service has been replaced by other ones to chat and place video calls. Unfortunately, few people know Hangouts also offered a dialer app, which allowed users to place calls for free in North America, as well anywhere in the world for relatively cheap fees. The software is also being phased out, and doesn't really come with an actual replacement. Sure, most people in US would have already switched to Google Voice for this purpose, but what about the ones in other countries?

Glad you got it set up. I do have the Google Voice app installed on my Android because I use my Google Voice phone number as my primary number. So when I call out, I want the other phone's caller ID to show my Google number, not my actual cell number. I could do this with Hangouts dialer too, except that that will use mobile data if I'm not on WiFi, but the Google Voice app uses just phone minutes (by relaying as I said above to Google's US phone numbers). So I won't use mobile data when I'm making/receiving calls. This won't work in Europe of course - over there I'll have to use Hangouts.

Following a recent Hangouts update, when using Android 5 on Nexus 5, in an SMS conversation with a contact, touching the "handset" icon automatically launches the Hangouts dialer, while I would like to use the default phone dialer instead.

If you clear the cache on the dialer (hangouts dialer), it should prompt you the first time after that (when something triggers the dialers) asking which dialer to use. You can select "always" on the regular dialer. This will use your cell service, not Hangouts.

If you've used the Google Voice app in the past, you may have set it to use your Voice number when making calls. These calls still used your carrier minutes, instead of your data signal. As a solution, Google created a second app that acts as a plug-in for Hangouts, called Hangouts Dialer. This app will add a dialer tab to Hangouts, allowing you to make outbound calls with your Voice number over Wi-Fi/data (VoIP). After you download the app, make sure to open it at least once to connect it to the original Hangouts app. You do not need this app to receive video calls via Hangouts.

If you want to use the stock dialer app on your device but have your Google Voice number appear on caller ID, keep the original Google Voice app and select the use Google Voice to make all calls in the settings.

Last night, we were prompted to merge Google Voice with Hangouts, which we assumed meant that the day of Hangouts becoming the app we always wanted, was here. Google confirmed as much this morning, announcing that free voice calls are now a part of Hangouts on Android, the web, and iOS. They also introduced a new dialer application for Hangouts that should aid in the call making process.

There are times when you want to just use the default dialer app on your device but want to have your Google Hangout Google Voice. If that is the case, then you just have to change some settings in your Google Hangouts Google Voice application. You will need to keep the original Google Voice or Hangouts app then select the usage of the Google Voice so that you can make the calls.

In addition to that, consider setting the Hangouts Dialer app as the phone's default dialer. It is one of the many apps that work with Google Voice even after the Google Voice integration Hangouts, after all. It is also one of the best Google Voice app for Android. With this option, you can easily display the Google Voice Hangouts number as the caller ID.

In later/current versions of Hangouts, the dialer is integrated/unified into the single app. But to enable outbound Caller ID, an earlier Hangouts needs to be installed, hence possibly needing the separate Dialer app which would now be redundant/unnecessary.

You might need to also download a version of Hangouts Dialer for this to work. I didn't find version matters, but since it's a deprecated app, you'll need to find the .apk for it somewhere such as -dialer.en.uptodown.com/android/download

PS I'm not sure what the status of Hangouts dialer is currently, but I now for a while the outbound caller ID wasn't working. I think it was @computergeek541 that told me about that. It might have been a temp issue though.

I do remember reverifying the number, yet hangouts would still not let me adjust the setting to turn outgoing phone number display back on. However, what I will say is that I believe that the phone number absolutely did still get transmitted, but you couldn't just turn the furture on or off.

I would guess if you already had the feature working on previous updates, and you had caller ID running, when you got the lastest update, around 10 months ago to last month, hangouts could not change the status of the caller ID. If you already had it enabled, it stayed enabled, if you had to re verify, which I often did, it would not work. It was only last month that google provided a hangouts dialer that had the caller ID work properly.

I am so used to it, I don't know what to do if google takes hangouts away from me. Maybe I will have to do something dramatic like switch to iOS! Seriously, the app just works. A good friend is travelling through the EU and he found out that his EE service that was purchased in the UK only provides free roaming data but not calling. We chat on hangouts and call quality is identical to a phone call.

I am a very heavy hangouts user, both for messaging and calls. Since I use the google account instead of a phone number, I was not aware that the dialer was not doing caller ID properly. I also use google voice with the phone dialer for making long distance calls. That has always worked. I have nothing but good things to say about hangouts for voice quality. I hope google doesn't shelve it.

Google finally updated their hangouts dialer so the caller ID bug is gone. It is even better, I can use any device I have tied to my gmail account, and it will use my cell phone caller ID when making hangouts calls.

The Android app is significantly easier to understand than the old one. Contacts are in one tab, conversations are in another, and the last tab hosts the VoIP dialer. There's a normal navigation drawer that lets you jump to the settings and other lesser-used parts of the app. There's also a new Hangouts Dialer app in the Play Store, which gives users an easy way to add a direct link to the VoIP dialer to their home screen. The bad news is that there are now two dialers apps for Android. ff782bc1db
