The use of static electricity removes the unburned carbon particles in smoke in the precipitators, leaving clean, and hot air to escape the smokestacks. It is essential to remove this unreacted carbon from the smoke as it can damage buildings and harm human health.
Cyclone Separators – This separation device uses the principle of inertia to remove particulate matter from flue gases. In these separators, dirty flue gas enters a chamber containing a vortex, and the difference in inertia causes the gas particles to move up the cylinder while larger particles hit the inside wall and drop down. This results in the separation of the particulate matter from the flue gas, resulting in cleaned flue gas.
Fabric Filters - These are simple filters that can be used to remove dust from flue gases. They can also be used to remove acidic gases if they utilize basic compounds. In this method some sort of fabric is placed in such a way that flue gasses must pass through it before exiting the smokestacks. This procedure causes the dust particles to be trapped in the cloth.
Scrubbers - Scrubbers are used to remove harmful gaseous pollutants from industrial exhaust gases before being released into the environment. The two main types of scrubbers are - wet scrubbers and dry scrubbers. The main difference is in the type of material used to remove the gases.
Incineration – This process is used to convert VOC emissions into carbon dioxide and water through combustion. An afterburner is used for incineration, which is built to create the conditions necessary for complete combustion (such as sufficient burn time and high temperature).
Carbon Capture - Carbon capture and storage refers to the process of capturing the carbon dioxide and storing it below ground, pumping it into geologic layers. This process is rarely being used but is talked about extensively as a way to limit greenhouse gas emissions leading to climate change.
