Reviewer: Celso Agner, MD, MS, MSc (Michigan Neurology Partners)

Description: With the advent of modern imaging and surgical techniques, neurosurgery has evolved significantly since the first edition of this handbook over two decades ago. Since the sixth edition of 2006, much has changed in terms of the safety of neurosurgical techniques. This is a welcome and needed update.

Purpose: The purpose is to present a pocket guide to neurosurgical techniques.

Audience: Neurosurgeons, neurosurgery residents, neurologists, and nurses caring for neurological patients are the main audiences.

Features: In addition to the areas covered in the previous edition, this book includes information on diverse neurosurgical techniques and microsurgical anatomical aspects, as well as details of awake craniotomies, neuronavigation protocols, and the nuances of spine instrumentation. Although the book includes neuroendovascular techniques, discussion of this area is weak and, in some instances, inaccurate. Neuroendovascular techniques are becoming a very important part of any modern neurosurgery training program. Otherwise, there are no other drawbacks. The picture quality is superb and the references are up to date.

Assessment: This is an excellent update. The relative weakness in its coverage of endovascular neurosurgery does not diminish the value of this handbook for young professionals in search of a quick pocket neurosurgical reference.

Now in an updated ninth edition, Handbook of Neurosurgery by Mark Greenberg is synonymous with the most classic neurosurgical handbook published to-date. It has enjoyed legendary status as the go-to manual for legions of neurosurgeons for more than a quarter century. The comprehensive and conveniently compact book brings together a wide range of clinical practice guidelines from disparate sources into an amazing one-stop resource.

Renowned for its depth and breadth, the updated text with nearly 1,800 pages encompasses the entire spectrum of neurosurgery including anatomy, physiology, differential diagnosis, and current principles of nonsurgical and surgical management. The text covers a huge scope of inherited, developmental, and acquired neurological disorders impacting pediatric to geriatric patients. The easy-to-navigate print and electronic formats provide an intuitive foundation for studying the field of neurosurgery.

This practical handbook allows nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and allied health professionals practicing in the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, and spinal care to quickly review essentials while in the work environment. It emphasizes procedural steps and critical elements in patient management, including intensive care, the neurological examination, differential diagnoses, and pain management. Written by a multidisciplinary team of experts, the handbook is expected to become a well-worn companion and essential aid to the busy practitioner.

For two decades, Handbook of Neurosurgery -- now in a fully updated seventh edition -- has been an invaluable companion for every neurosurgery resident and nurse, as well as neurologists and others involved in the care of patients with brain and spine disorders. Dr. Greenberg's classic text covers the breadth of neurosurgery and its allied specialties and provides the latest information on anatomy and physiology, differential diagnosis, and currently accepted principles of clinical management. Renowned for its scope and accessibility, this portable, single-volume guide is packed with more than 1,300 pages of practical information, including thousands of literature citations, handy cross-references, and a thorough index.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the brain, spine, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Although it is fundamentally a surgical discipline, neurosurgery requires knowledge of neurology, critical care, trauma care, and radiology. Neuroanatomy and disorders of the human nervous system may be intimidating to students and non-neurological physicians. All practitioners, however, should be familiar with some aspects of the discipline of neurosurgery. This supplement provides a basic fund of knowledge all physicians should have, regardless of their chosen specialty.

Anthony L. Petraglia, MD, graduated from the University of Chicago in 2002 with a BA in neuroscience and earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2007. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2014. Petraglia was the first neurosurgery resident to complete a neurological sports medicine fellowship, and is currently an attending neurosurgeon at Unity Health System in Rochester, New York, where he is also the director of the concussion program.

Bailes was director of cerebrovascular surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1988 until 1997 and later at Celebration Health Hospital in Orlando, where he also was the director of emergency medical services at both the city and county levels. In 2000, Bailes assumed the position of professor and chair in the department of neurosurgery at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown. He most recently assumed the position of chair of the department of neurosurgery at NorthShore University Health System in Chicago and is co-director of the Neurological Institute.

The purpose of this brain tumor handbook is to help patients and families find up-to-date sources of information and support specific to the Brain Tumor Program and Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center.

During your stay in the hospital, your care will be provided not only by a team of doctors and nurses who are brain tumor experts but also by many other staff members. We hope this handbook will help you to learn about your brain tumor and how to talk about it with your treatment team.

The rest of this handbook is a 7-chapter booklet about brain tumors that contains valuable information for people with a newly diagnosed brain tumor, long-term brain tumor survivors, and family members. Various sections discuss emotional aspects of the diagnosis, fertility issues, financial concerns, long-term care planning, and much more. Frankly Speaking About Cancer: Brain Tumors is given to you on behalf of Barrow Neurological Institute, and reprinted with permission from the Cancer Support Community and the National Brain Tumor Society. We hope you will turn to this handbook time and again for helpful additional information.

Now in an updated eighth edition, the Handbook of Neurosurgery has enjoyed legendary status on the bookshelf of every neurosurgery department for over a quarter of a century. Renowned for its scope and accessibility, the portable, single-volume guide is an invaluable resource for anyone involved in the care of patients with disorders of the central nervous system - neurosurgical residents, nurses, neurologists, and allied healthcare practitioners.

This classic handbook covers the full depth and breadth of the complex field of neurosurgery - including inherited and acquired neurological disorders, developmental anomalies, and more esoteric topics such as toxins that impact the central nervous system. The text also covers conditions treated primarily by neurologists that may come to the attention of a neurosurgical care provider such as Parkinsonism, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron diseases, and dementia. The latest information is provided on anatomy and physiology, differential diagnosis, and current principles of nonsurgical and surgical management covering the full age continuum - from pediatric to geriatric conditions.

Comprehensive and conveniently compact, this is a must-have daily reference, a perfect study companion for board exams, as well as ideal for maintenance of certification preparation. It is certain to be a treasured tome for legions of new neurosurgery residents and an essential tool for anyone working in the clinical neurosciences. 2351a5e196
