Turkish Handball Federation (Turkish: Trkiye Hentbol Federasyonu) is the governing body of handball and beach handball sports in Turkey. It was formed on February 4, 1976.[1] The headquarters is located in ankaya district of Ankara.[2] It is a member of the European Handball Federation (EHF).

It organizes leagues, tournaments and championships for all age groups of both genders at national level. In addition, support services like the education of referees and coaches are within its duties. Participations of Turkish handball teams at all international competition events are organized by the federation.[3]

Handball sport began in Turkey in the period 1927-1938 as an outdoor game, initiated by three Turkish instructors for physical education at military schools, who were trained in Germany. The first official rules for field handball were published in 1934 by the "Turkey Physical Training Association" (Turkish: Trkiye dman Cemiyeti), and the first official open-air field handball match was played in 1938.[1]

In 1942, the sports handball, volleyball and basketball were organized unter the "Sport Games Federation" (Turkish: Spor Oyunlar Federasyonu) that led to a fast-growing development. The first field handball league was formed in the 1942-43 season in Istanbul. In 1945, the first Turkish championship was organized.[1][4]

From 1945 on, indoor handball matches were held for girls in schools. Between 1960 and 1962, the first referee courses took place. Serious efforts relating indoor handball date from the mid-1970s. In that time, instructors of physical education, who were sent to West Germany for further education, founded the modern indoor handball sport in Turkish schools following their return. In 1975, official indoor handball rules were translated and published by Yaar Sevim of the Sports Academy of Ankara.[1]

Aim: To investigate the frequency of dental injuries in paediatric handball players. In addition, the players' habits with regard to mouthguard usage, as well as their general knowledge of the prevention of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) were investigated. Data were collected by structured one-to-one interviews with children of 14 randomly selected handball teams in the amateur national league.

Conclusions: The results show that handball players need more knowledge and education considering the prevention of TDIs from their sports clubs and dentists. The importance of adequate facial protection in contact sports should be endorsed by all sports clubs, and parents advised accordingly.

On Saturday, November 24, 2018, the annual Turkey Burner Doubles Handball Tournament was held at Los Caballeros Sports Village. This event is hosted by LAFD Handball and the United States Handball Association as a fundraiser to support local youth handball and the First Ace Fund. There were five Divisions with 43 teams competing.

This tournament provides a great opportunity for LAFD players to compete against the best, and develop relationships in the Southern California Handball Community. Sportsmanship is defined as respect and commitment to social norms, opponents, rules, and regulations besides the absence of a negative approach to sporting participation and responsibility for sport. When the related literature is reviewed, it can be seen that the Multidimensional Sportsmanship Orientation Scale (MSOS) was used in the studies examining handball (18, 19), basketball and volleyball (4, 21), and football (9, 12, 15); moreover it is used to determine the sportsmanship orientation of individuals doing team and individual sports (1, 2, 3, 20, 26).

Because there are no studies into sportsmanship orientation of beach handball players in foreign literature and limitation of similar studies in Turkey, it is thought that the present study becomes more important. From this point of view, the aim of this study was to examine sportsmanship orientation of individuals doing beach handball in terms of some variables. Answers were sought for the following questions in accordance with this purpose:

Distribution of beach handball players participated in the study according to demographic features has been shown in Table 1. There were 58 female participants (41.4%), and 82 of them were male (58.6%). When 140 beach handball players were divided into groups, 49 athletes were between 18-20 years (35.0%), 50 of them were between 21-23 years (35.7%), and 41 of them were 24 years and over (29.3%). When athletes were asked how many years they played handball, it was found that 49 of the participants reported playing handball between one and five years (35.0%), 52 of them reported between six and 10 years (37.1%), 39 of them reported over 11 years and more (27.9%). When the participants were asked whether they played for a team, it was seen that there was equality between the answers of yes and no. When the question regarding how many years participants had played handball, it was found that 49 of them reported they played between one and five years (35.0%), 52 of them reported between six and 10 years (37.1%), 39 of them reported 11 years and over (27.9%).

RECOMMENDATION

The following recommendations have been given for managers of beach handball, sport educators, coaches, rule makers of beach handball, and researchers planning to design sportspersonship studies:
