The objective of this project was to design a device that would expand the smartphone's capabilities in some way. The device must be designed with tolerance specifications and manufacturing methodologies set in mind, with an plan for scale-up production.

Noticing that a large number of people were adapting to virtual conditions due to COVID-19, our team sought out to design a device that would help students and teachers be able to quickly scan their documents or project their work efficiently. For us, this meant a small and mobile contraption that could be set up to mount the user's phone.

However, we realized that this design would require the legs to be significantly large to be able to view just an 8'' x 11'' paper. In addition, in order to project one's work, a person must be able to get their hands comfortably beneath the device. Therefore, this design was deemed insufficient for our purposes.

Our original idea was a contraption with four rubber-domed feet that would be able to stand on uneven terrain due to the adjustable legs. The phone would be clamped down into the base plate, where its camera will be exposed to the sides.

In the end, we decided to go with a cantilever design that would leave more room for the user to use with their hands. The device has been designed with the optimal angle in mind for a paper to be placed beneath it. For example, the user can then scan their pages, or show on video their work in progress.
