French 1970s musical icon Marc Cerrone created this frightening (for then at least) vision of a not-too-distant sci-fi future where escaped mutant creatures created in a lab to end human starvation have rebelled against their makers to disastrous effect for all. Basically sci-fi disco for the Studio 54 set, this track is the greatest statement on that brief genre. Period. The video (and album artwork) are also stone-cold classics. Ask your parents.

Want to see demons in your sleep? This magnum opus from Throbbing Gristle has barely-there vocals with only a crying synth for accompaniment. Good luck getting to sleep after listening to this truly scary song.

If you have a reaper running around your Halloween party, this scary song will be a perfect addition to the playlist. If anyone is dressed up as the guy ready to play the cowbell though, you may want to cover your ears for its duration.

This is one of the few times that an established director has successfully produced the theme for his own movie Halloween. John Carpenter came up with a truly scary song that puts a sinister spin on the synth sound of Tangerine Dream and Vangelis. You can feel Michael Myers creeping up on you just by listening.

MANHATTAN -- Several famous musical compositions have become known for their terror-raising appeal through their association with various mediums of pop culture, according to two Kansas State University professors.

"Most music which is considered scary is because of its association with literature or because it was used in a movie, television show or drama to evoke horror or surprise," said Craig Parker, associate professor of music history at K-State.

One of the best-known scary compositions of music is Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Parker said. Originally written as an organ piece in 1707, Parker said the piece is now more widely known for its role in movies such as "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "Phantom of the Opera," "Sunset Boulevard" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Jana Fallin, professor of music education at K-State, said she attributes two scary musical compositions to the Walt Disney movie "Fantasia." Fallin said these two selections include "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," composed by Paul Dukas, and "Night on Bald Mountain" originally written by Modest Moussorgsky and orchestrated by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov.

"Masters of writing scary music in movies included Bernard Herrmann, who wrote the music for most of Hitchcock's movies, including 'Psycho' with its terrifying shower scene, and Franz Waxman, who wrote the music for 'The Bride of Frankenstein' and many other horror films," Parker said. "Excerpts from their movie scores often appear on orchestral concerts and radio broadcasts, particularly around Halloween."

* "Danse Macabre" by Camille Saint-Saens is based on a poem by Henri Cazalis in which "death is depicted as a fiddle player in an old graveyard on a cold night, making the skeletons dance with his fiddle music," Fallin said.

Much of this earlier music requires special performance techniques that go beyond the notation in the original scores. This is particularly true of the French Baroque, which had a tradition and distinct performance styles that differed from the rest of Europe. Many of those performance traditions were forgotten over time, and have to be studied and relearned by specialists such as Seicento.

I started Sharps & Flatirons in 2014 to supplement the writing on classical music that appears under my name in Boulder Weekly . I hope to bring you articles about events and links to the stories in Boulder Weekly (Performance Previews); news about the local classical music scene (Music News); an occasional review (Performance Reviews); and perspectives on the wider classical music world (Viewpoints). Like all blogs, this will reflect the personal interests, not to say quirks, of the author.

Jim and Greg celebrate Halloween this week with a few of their favorite genre-spanning scary songs. Plus, we hear a selection of scary tunes nominated by listeners from around the country. They'll also give their opinions on the debut album from rock band Greta Van Fleet.

The rock band Greta Van Fleet just released its anticipated debut album, Anthem of the Peaceful Army. The young band hails from Frankenmuth, Michigan and its members are students of rock and roll, which is obviously evident on Anthem. Greg says there's no denying that GVF is imitating the titans of rock history, Led Zeppelin, but notes that they aren't the first to do so. From vocals to sonic style to costumes to lyrics, this band tries to emulate the magic of Led Zeppelin I. While Greg believes the group has musical chops, he wishes the band would create an original sound and album. Jim pokes fun at the albums' serious and dramatic lyrics by reciting a poem made up of one line from each song on the record. He feels like the band members are in costume, wishes they would be more original and take themselves a little less seriously.

Music is essential for setting the right mood and atmosphere for the occasion, and Halloween is no exception. For centuries, composers have been telling scary stories with their music, and many pieces have become iconic because of their use in pop culture for that very purpose.

"Spooky, Scary Skeletons" was one of nine original songs on the album Halloween Howls, released, according to Gold on his 1996 liner notes, to fill a void of availability of fun and scary Halloween original songs.[5][6] Andrew produced, mixed, sang and played all the instruments on the track. It prominently features a xylophone to represent the sound of skeletal bones rattling.[7]

"Spooky, Scary Skeletons" has since become an Internet meme, with its origins in YouTube gaming culture.[2] One example of an early viral video featuring the track is a video that features Minecraft characters dancing to the song.[2] Since the 2010s, the song has become a standard in music playlists for Halloween parties, along with the 1962 song "Monster Mash".[2]

In 2013, Israeli-American remix musician Yoav Landau, member of the YouTube band The Living Tombstone created an electronic dance-like remix of the song with a faster tempo than the original.[1] Their upload of the remix to YouTube has garnered over 98 million views.[1] Intelligencer's Brian Feldman called the Living Tombstone's remix "probably the most well-known version of the song".[1] This remix further propelled the song's status as an Internet meme; both the original song and the Living Tombstone remix are often paired with such visuals as The Skeleton Dance and a video of a man dancing while wearing a pumpkin head and a black unitard, the latter being from a mid-2000s broadcast on local Omaha, Nebraska news station KXVO.[1][8]
