I always hear about how everyone is waiting for Half-life 3. I looked at the reviews on Half-life 1 and Half-life 2, and they received some of the highest ratings I've seen. What makes this series so popular? Is it worth it to still go back and play Half-Life 1? Is Half-Life worth $10 (the price it's currently going for on Steam)? Thanks.

Not so long ago I just finished half life 2 and episode 1 and 2.Wow,I have been missing out on these game. These game did so many things right that it makes game nowadays look bad.I will split my reviews(thoughs) into few parts.

Half Life 2 is a first person shooter developed and published by valve, which is in my honest opinion one of the three best studios to ever exist. I remember the game as a fun shooter but not much else, but enough fun that it left a mark on me for over half of my life that I still feel the need to compare it to modern shooters that I play and go "man, this is fun and all, but it's not as fun as half life was when I was a kid." So I went back into the rabbit hole, and what I found was a game that released 19 years ago that still stands even to modern games as one of the best I have ever played.

Now why is this? I mean the game doesnt look as amazing as I remember, but it also still looks miles better than its contemporaries from the time, if you were to strip all my knowledge and memories of the game away and show me footage and ask what general time I thought the game came out I would say late 2000s to early 2010s, essentially the peak of the xbox 360 graphics. The fact that it doesnt look extremely dated for an early to mid 2000s game stood out to me. I've become used to seeing these games that were pillars to my childhood and my gaming life and being struck by how dated the graphics look. From Oblivion to Call Of Duty 3 and 4, but the fact is Half Life graphics were so ahead of there time you can go nearly a full decade from it's initial release and it still held up. Not to mention the amazing art direction of the game. From getting off of the train and exploring the city for a moment before Barry stops you from getting on a one way train to hell you can see the oppressive style that the combine has forced on humanity. And the npcs, while sparse, are well placed and their demeanor and short lines tell the story of how the combine has beaten the will to fight out of humanity. The small touches such as the empty and decrepit playground to the blocked off street that shows the strider walking. In the first area of the game you really see how humanity is almost doomed to die out under their dimensional overlords. And the game continues on this enviromental story telling throughout, from the drained and disgusting rivers during the boat ride, to the utter despair and all hope is lost in ravenholm. Valve hit the setting, art direction, and enviromental story telling out of the park with the game. It looked cool as a kid just mowing down enemies but as an adult it tells a story and can make you feel what Valve intended for you to feel in ways that most games just aren't able to anymore.

just got the game now that it's free and I'm not sure i understand what half life:uplink is, i know that it has extra levels and storylines but does it have the whole game + those added things or is it just an expansion that you play after half life

Hi. First of all I humbly ask you to read the full post before commenting ,secondly, A few months ago decided to look into the portal series because someone recommended me to play it, and god did I feel like I was missing out on it for all these years! It has quickly become one of my favorite games of all time and I absolutely loved every moment of it. Now, as I am aware there are direct connections between the portal games and the half life games as they are set in the same world, there for I naturally thought, "should I try half life?". The biggest problem I have with this question is that I don't like shooter games. I don't like the gameplay, I don't know why, I have tried fps games before but they were never appealing to me and I don't just wanna play the half life games because they have connections to portal. So based on all of that, do you think I can enjoy half life for what it is? Thanks for reading :)

The biggest problem with the human enemies however, is their bullets. If you're not familiar with the term "Hitscan", it's when a game doesn't have the bullets a gun shoots actually travel through the air, and instead instantly registers where the gun is aiming as hit. This game has a close tie to Quake, and Halo, in perhaps unapparent ways with the combat. they each posses at least one of 2 important qualities. Quake (the original, I haven't played 2, which the goldsource engine is based on) has incredibly fast movement and almost all, if not all, the enemies shoot projectiles that take at least some time to travel for you. These 2 things blend together to make the combat in the game feel incredible, as it's all about avoiding projectiles and moving fast, similar to those top down "bullet hell" shooters, but in 3D. In Halo, the fast movement drops, but all enemy forces still fire weapons that take time to travel. So though it's not as adrenaline pumping as Quake's combat, it's still based around avoiding enemy's shots while dishing out what you can. Finally, Half-Life has a strange blend. The movement is still incredibly quick, very similar to Quake's, but it doesn't matter half of the time because you can't dodge any human weapons. In Soldier or Black-Ops engagements, the only purpose for the fast movement is to rush up with the shotgun, or to get to cover when you need it.

I say "half of the time" with Half-Life's combat because it is literally half the time during high action fights. Fighting the aliens, they always shoot projectiles that take time to travel, and the combat begins to feel a lot like Quake's. I enjoyed every single engagement with alien soldiers of every kind. Even the final battle with the Nihilanth was avoiding projectiles in a very 3D space.

I realize this might be the wrong place, but is the game good for someone who has never played a half life game? Its half off right now, and I've heard good things, but I'm unsure if I'm going to be lost playing it. I figure some people here might've been in the same boat as me in the past.

The VR implementation is great, and could almost be mistaken as a true VR version: Touch controllers and tracking work like you'd expect, and I find it cool how you can squeeze through tight places by crouching in real life. There is no manual reloading to my knowledge though, and you got no visible hands when a weapon is equipped; also, there were some minor visual glitches, but this issue was very minimal. Game was quite terrifying at times, especially when you are crawling a vent and those small insect-looking things lunge at you, awful.

Recently, I have been obsessed with half life. After picking up the first game up again after years, I got hooked. I bought every single game within the series (that is on steam). However, I have not bought Half Life Alyx.

He keeps posting these low effort questions constantly about sexual nonsense. His fanfic clogs the subreddit with trash and he is always starting arguments. I think he has crossed rule 5 multiple times.

I played both of the half-life games around 1-2 years ago and I am craving a similar experience. What I liked the most about these games were the combat mechanics, the physics-based puzzles and a great storyline, mainly the first two. ff782bc1db
