Track 1 - Written Hawaiian Language

This track offers participants the tools and technology to develop proficiencies in Hawaiian language reading and writing. The scope and sequence of this track goes as follows:

In each level course students will:

    • Shift existing ways of previous language and culture literature learning
    • Identify Hawaiian word categories and word functions, parts of a sentence to a whole sentence
    • Become aware of Hawaiian pronunciation
    • Generate actionable translation strategies
    • Offer and receive authentic feedback and support
    • Understand how to reference course text for future use

Track 2 - Spoken Hawaiian Language

This track will enable students to students to identify, practice and develop their proficiencies in Hawaiian language listening expression and speaking expression.

  • Level 1 - Conversation
  • Level 2 - Storytelling
  • Level 3 - Speech
  • Level 4 - Transcription
  • Level 5 - Interview
  • Level 6 - Spoken Autobiography Artifact

In each level course students will:

    • Shift existing ways of previous language and culture speaking and listening.
    • Identify Hawaiian communicative forms, functions and contexts
    • Develop appropriate Hawaiian pronunciation in speech
    • Implement actionable translation strategies on-demand
    • Offer and receive authentic feedback and support
    • Understand how to reference course resources for future use

Track 3 - Cultural Hawaiian Language

This track will empower participants to design, create and maintain a community project.

  • Level 4 - Responsibility
  • Level 5 - Stewardship
  • Level 6 - Community Project Engagement Artifact


Each student's course participation is individualized by their availability, completion of course attendance and work, and point of exit. This program is not for everyone. Not all students will choose to complete the entire program. Students may enroll in multiple tracks at the same time. Each level is a prerequisite to the following level. Completion of Capstone Level Projects and approval from Kumu Kainoa will move Haumāna to next level. Tracks have no prerequisite. Course text and resources will be shared after sign up.
