Once the frog tape was up we then added the double sided tape to the frog tape in the same grid pattern. After that we put the wallpaper up on the double sided tape, trimmed off the edges, and had a final product.

Next, wrap your length of peel-and-stick wallpaper around the three sides of your Kallax unit. I found it easiest to work from the bottom corner of one side, up and over, down to the bottom corner of the other side. I suggest rotating the unit so that whatever side you are papering is upright, and pull the paper backing off as you go. Be sure to take your time, smoothing out creases and bubbles with a scraper as you work. Once the paper is fully in place, use a sharp knife along the edge to trim down any excess paper.

I have a bit of an obsession with wallpaper. I love the many wonderful designs and patterns available. Currently, there is a definite trend to use wallpaper in interiors. Many of these wallpapers are dramatic and colourful.

I particularly love the wonderful tropical wallpapers that are popular at the moment. I have used some to wallpaper furniture, such as an IKEA mirror. My friend Wendy shares my passion for wallpaper. We often share rolls of paper that we have used for wallpapering furniture.

Top tip: Sites like Etsy and eBay sell part rolls of wallpaper, which are great for projects like this. Especially if you want to use a more expensive brand of wallpaper, buying a part roll makes the project more affordable.

Step 2: Mix up the wallpaper paste according to the instructions on the packet. Then brush some paste onto the drawer fronts and leave it to dry. This will provide a key and help the wallpaper stick firmly to the IKEA Hemnes drawers.

Step 3: Next, think about the wallpaper pattern and how you would like it to appear on the drawer front. Unfortunately, the Hemnes drawer fronts were wider than the width of the wallpaper roll.

Step 4: With the IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers, there is a small gap between the edges of the drawer front and the carcass. This means that when wallpapering the drawer fronts, the wallpaper can wrap over the edge of the drawers without impeding the opening and closing.

Step 5: Check the instructions with the wallpaper, whether the wallpaper or the furniture needs to be pasted with glue. With this particular wallpaper, we pasted the drawer fronts with a fresh coat of wallpaper paste using a brush.

Once you are happy with the positioning, wrap the paper around the edges. Make sure there is paste on the back of the drawer front for this wrap over the paper to stick to. If you have too much paper overlap, cut the excess paper with wallpaper with scissors.

Step 6: Next, one by one, stick the wallpaper down either side of the central piece to ensure the whole drawer front is covered. You can gently slide the side wallpaper pieces with your hands to match the pattern.

In order to achieve the high-end custom look I envisioned, we added baseboards, crown moulding, shoe moulding, recessed puck lights for in-cabinet lighting, refaced the fronts and sides of the wardrobe units with wood strips, added wood drawer fronts, added plugs to cover the unused shelving holes, wallpapered the back of the units, primed and painted everything, then swapped out the metal hanging rods for stained wooden rods, and finally added drawer hardware.

Hey Erin! This looks stunning!! You shared that you wallpapered after the drawers and shelves (on the hanging side) were in place and then primed. Can you clarify the steps: Did you actually remove them and wallpaper the entire MDF, or did you take the time to wallpaper each section to shape/size? And did you prime the wallpaper with the rest of the system prior to painting, or did you cover and tape it off?

Hi Ashley! We left the drawers in place but removed any shelves (except the top ones since we fixed those in place) to wallpaper, then we primed everything (including the wallpaper) and then painted everything. In retrospect, we could have wallpapered the entire MDF back panel before we added any trim at all and it would have been easier than cutting to size (but we might have used more wallpaper that way). Hope that helps!

Your closet is awesome, Erin! We are in the midst of doing ours much like you have and I have a question. Have you had any problems with the wallpaper you used to cover the back wall seams? I have read comments on bubbling, lifting, being difficult to cover with paint, etc. Would greatly appreciate any input!
