This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to creating engaging and accessible Open Educational Resources (OERs) for language learning using H5P. Participants will explore the principles of OER through discussions on Creative Commons licensing and the 5Rs framework. A comprehensive overview of H5P will be followed by practical exercises in adapting and creating interactive H5P content using Curriki Studio. By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped with the skills to design and develop their own H5P-based language learning materials.

With a strong background in teaching both English and Vietnamese as foreign/second/heritage languages, he has a deep understanding of language learners' needs and challenges. His expertise extends to working with both pre-service and in-service language teachers, enabling him to design effective professional development workshops. Huy Phung has a proven track record in developing innovative learning solutions and has recently contributed to the field by publishing a ‘taskbook’ as an OER entitled “Intermediate Vietnamese: A Task-based Journey" at https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/JHQ6N

Complete the following TASKS to get hands-on practice with H5P via Curriki Studio.
Step 1: Go to https://www.currikistudio.org and sign up for an account at Sign Up for Free at StudioK20.
You can use the 'Sign up with Google' option if you like. If you have created an account before, you just need to sign in.
Step 2: When you are in the StudioK20 Dashboard, click My Projects from the left sidebar, then click the + sign that reads Create a Project. Enter a project name (e.g., H5P Practice) and click Create Project.
Step 3. Once you are in your project, click "Create new playlist" and give it a name as you prefer. Think of the project as a course or a book, the playlist as a module or a chapter, and then you will have activities in the playlist. Once you are in your playlist, you can CREATE, ADD EXISTING, or UPLOAD H5P activities.
Step 1. Go to https://pressbooks.directory/?collec=Language+Learning, look for the list of H5P activities in a book of the target language you are interested in. Which content types are most commonly used in that book?
Step 2. Identify ONE H5P activity that you want to adapt. Use the REUSE button on the left down corner of that activity and download it to your computer. (If you couldn't find one, use this one https://h5p.org/node/1500780)
Step 3. Go back to your Playlist in StudioK20 and to UPLOAD the file you have just downloaded and start editing the H5P.
Step 1. Skim this article on how the author used one H5P content type 'Sort the paragraphs' to design different language learning activities. What have you learned?
Step 2. Fill in the blanks is also a popular activity in language learning. Brainstorm several ways to make use of this content type (e.g., word formation, verb conjuration, dictation, IELTS reading summary...)
Step 3. Create a 'Fill in the blanks' activity in Curriki Studio with your own content. You can use GenAI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini to generate new content. See the examples below:
Step 4. Share your H5P activity in the following padlet. Click the three dots in each activity in Curriki Studio and choose Get link. Copy and paste the link with a short description in the padlet.
Below are some selected references and resources used in this workshop. More will be added over time.
