We are invested in mechanics, fabricating, racing, building, and using our heads to create an innovative machine on a small budget. We would love your support!
Our team formed this year but our story begins with each of our individual team members. All we have in common is spending years having "build and race a go kart" on our bucket list. When our university started hosting go kart races we knew it was our chance to make that dream a reality!
Lars is our team founder and engine mechanic. He is currently pursuing a degree in aviation maintenance with a concentration in mechanical engineering. His story in mechanics began when he started a small bike repair business in Oaxaca, Mexico. His family was missionaries, and the people in the village had a need for a skilled bike mechanic. He did this for a year and found his passion in wrenching. That next summer, he was given the opportunity to be an automotive mechanic in Oregon. After that, he applied for his degree and began watching car videos every night. He has now had hands-on experience working in powerplant labs and an internship in airframe electrical. Even though he has yet to buy his own car due to tuition costs, he still loves his work!
Jamin is our lead fabricator. He is currently pursuing a degree in materials joining technologies. Growing up in Tajikistan as a missionary kid, his father was always working on cars as there wasn't a local mechanic. Around the age of 16 he began taking interest in cars and would help his father with the family minivan. He took interest in blacksmithing, making his own knives before coming to Letourneau in 2019 in pursuit of his passion for fabrication and hands on work. That year he learned about his school's automotive society and knew that was for him. He learned more about how to work on cars and became a member in fall of 2022.
Grant Becker is our team driver. He is currently pursuing a degree in professional flight with a concentration in aviation maintenance. He has always had a passion for racing. During the covid-19 quarantine, his friend introduced him to F1, and he was hooked. He spent those months watching races from the past decades and learning about the F1 legends. After that, he sought opportunities to race on a low budget. Simulation racing on the dirt roads behind his house with his brother's truck or after work as a landscaper at a local go-kart rental garage. Now his dream is a reality with the go-kart races coming up this October.
Matt acts as our assistant engine mechanic and fabricator. He is currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. His story began doing work with his dad on various projects, learning many fabrication methods. Once he left home for college, he saw the opportunities Letourneau held to further these skills. He took hands-on classes and joined his school's automotive society, learning how to work on cars and internal combustion engines. He applies these skills with Jamin and Lars, helping weld, tune, and add input when brainstorming.
Professor Nick Pool is currently our faculty member. When Lars asked him to be a member of the team in the spring of 2022, he took the opportunity. His experience began in 2001 when he joined the military as a helicopter mechanic. He learned a lot from his job and his coworkers. After he was done with that, he went to Letourneau for a degree in aviation maintenance. After graduating in 2012, he went to Covington to apply these skills, learning more. After working a variety of jobs, he returned to Letourneau as a professor. He is currently teaching classes such as gas turbine engines and fuel systems.
Thank you for reading about us! We appreciate your interest and care! This has been an awesome adventure, but we have to say it is difficult to afford this while taking out loans and working in the summers to afford the school year. That is where you come in!
