With $342.7 million domestic and $454.7 overseas for a $797.4m worldwide cume through Tuesday, Walt Disney has officially proclaimed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will cross the (arbitrary?) $800m milestone today. Yet, despite hopes and expectations that the Walt Disney release would be yet another $1 billion+ blockbuster, that's not going to happen. At this rate, it's going to end up closer to the $873m worldwide cume of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is not a little ironic. But that says more about the superhero genre than it does about this specific movie.

That Guardians 2 won't make it anywhere near $1 billion worldwide does not mean that the well-received MCU sequel should be considered a disappointment (#CanThisFranchiseBeSaved?) or that we're suffering from any kind of "superhero fatigue." What this means is that, nearly ten years after The Dark Knight and Iron Man, 15 years after Spider-Man and 28 years after Batman, there is still something of a ceiling in terms of how most comic book superhero movies perform.

Prior to 2013, the biggest-grossing comic book superhero movie that didn't feature Wolverine, Batman, Iron Man or Spider-Man was Thor, with a whopping $449 million worldwide take. The biggest movie sans Batman, Iron Man or Spider-Man was X-Men: The Last Stand with $459m worldwide in 2006. While that number has obviously gone up thanks to the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy ($773m in 2014) and Deadpool ($783m last year), there is still something of a hierarchy in terms of big comic book superhero movies and top-tier blockbuster grosses.

Now there are a few caveats. Spider-Man 3 (and possibly the first two Spider-Man movies) would be well over $1 billion worldwide at today's ticket prices and with a 3D bump. And while it was heavily sold with Batman and the Joker, Suicide Squad did make $745 million worldwide last year despite not even playing in China. And yeah, had Deadpool been in 3D and played in China it almost certainly would have become the first "no Bruce, Tony or Peter" superhero flick to top $800m worldwide. And yeah, among non-comic book superhero movies, you can make the case that The Matrix Reloaded ($742m in 2003) would be a heck of a lot closer to $1 billion if inflation and likely 3D bumps were taken into account.

And that's somewhat the point of all of this. There is still great value in big-budget superhero movies and there is still money to be made from the likes of Logan or Wonder Woman or Black Panther. But as we've seen, there is still something of a ceiling for all but a few choice offerings, specifically those starring the three biggest big-screen superheroes of all. ff782bc1db
