short story

Columbus and Envious Sailors

– Dr. Goutam Sarker

Columbus discovered America under severe constraints.  After the discovery, when he came back, a group of envious sailors discussed in his presence that the discovery was not at all appreciable. If they were given with a ship and some other equipment, they could also be able to discover America. Hearing this, Columbus thought for a while and gave those sailors an egg. He asked them to put the egg stand erected vertically on the table. The egg was passed from one sailor to another and each of them failed to do so. Finally they told that nobody can do it – it is quite impossible! Then Columbus took the egg and hit the egg on its vertical end to tap it there. Now he made the egg stand erected vertically on the table with the tapped end at the bottom. He exclaimed – ‘See, it is really possible’. The sailors started laughing at this and told – ‘ If anybody uses this trick he will be simply able to do this’.

Then Columbus told those sailors – ‘If someone succeeds a task first time in some way, it is quite easy for all the others to say that they can also do it in that way. But doing a job first time is really hard – it is  not so easy'

Moral: 1) Anyone can claim to do a task for the first time - when it is over, only after someone has already done it first time.

        2) The criticizer only blames his constraints and finds others without any constraint – when he is unable to complete a task, while an active worker overcomes all his constraints to accomplish his tasks.
