Titolo:   Machine learning and its merge with data assimilation to discover sub-manifolds and instabilities in nonlinear systems

Abstract: Data Assimilation is transitioned from model to data-driven with more and more fusion with machine learning at various degrees. 

This talk will show several recent results in the field of DA and ML with new algorithmic solutions and fields of applications originated in the science of climate. 

Biography: Alberto Carrassi's primary research field is data assimilation, with a particular emphasis on theoretical advancements driven by challenges in climate science, including forecasting, attribution, and impact assessment. His work is distinctly interdisciplinary, integrating data assimilation, dynamical systems theory, and, more recently, machine learning. He has developed sophisticated methods that exploit the system’s dynamical properties, investigated the effects and mitigation of model error, and contributed to pioneering hybrid approaches that combine data assimilation with machine learning. He has led and participated in several national and international research projects, and he currently serves as co-Principal Investigator of the Scale Aware Sea Ice Project (SASIP), funded by Schmidt Futures’ Virtual Earth System Research Institute (VESRI, USA), which explores the effects of global warming on polar regions.

Titolo:   About some 2-layer energy balance climate model

Abstract: We aim to study a two-layer energy balance model, that allows for vertical exchanges between a surface layer and the atmosphere. An essential parameter is the absorptivity of the atmosphere, denoted εa whose value depends critically on greenhouse gases (increasing concentrations of CO2 and CH4 lead to a more opaque atmosphere with higher values of ϵa). We aim here to make a complete mathematical analysis of the model (before turning to inverse problems questions) by obtaining results of global existence vs blow-up (depending on the value of εa), describing the equilibrium points (recovering the multi-stability of climate) and their sensitivy with respect to εa (observing the mathematical manifestation of the greenhouse effect for this toy model). Biography: Judith Vancostenoble is Full Professor at the Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III and the Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse. He obtained his PhD from the Université de Rennes 1 in 1998, with a thesis entitled ‘Stabilisation non monotone de systèmes vibrants et Controlabilité’, under the supervision of Professors Michel Pierre and Vilmos Komornik. His research activity is mainly focused on the control and stabilisation of partial derivative equations, in particular on Carleman estimates for weakly degenerate parabolic operators and on the null controllability of heat equations with singular potentials.

Titolo:   Data Assimilation

Abstract: ”Data assimilation” is a term used in the geosciences to refer to reconstructing the current state of a dynamical system from current and past observations of that system. By “observation” we mean the value of some (typically not injective) function of the current state of the system. The system itself as well as the observations might be perturbed by noise. The underlying dynamics as well as the observation function might contain unknown parameters which might be of interest as well. In geophysical applications, the underlying dynamics are typically infinite dimensional, while observations are finite dimensional (albeit with very large dimensions). Data assimilation is of great practical interest for instance in operational weather forecasting. In this contribution, I will try to give a brief overview over data assimilation from a mathematical perspective. There is no single mathematical paradigm that covers data assimilation entirely, but a wide range of different mathematical approaches to data assimilation exist. These fall broadly into deterministic and stochastic approaches, and I will discuss both of them. Several important results will be discussed and a number of open questions and problems presented.

Biography: ​Jochen Bröcker is Associate Professor in Environmental Data Analysis at the University of Reading, UK. His research focuses on the intersection of Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Probability Theory and Statistics, with applications in meteorology, climatology and oceanography. His specific interests include nonlinear and infinite-dimensional stochastic systems, data assimilation, applied nonlinear filtering, statistical learning, weather and climate forecast evaluation, and calibration, skill scores and forecast reliability.

Titolo:   Optimal prevention strategies for reducing claim frequency in risk models with jump clusters

Abstract: The determination of a majority threshold in any voting system can be influenced by voters’ attitudes towards uncertainty. Traditionally, a higher majority threshold is associated with a risk-averse attitude, serving as a means to protect against the tyranny of the majority. Moreover, the absence of ex-ante information regarding the likelihood of the voting outcome introduces a further layer of uncertainty, that of ambiguity, which motivates decision-makers to seek increased protection. In this study, we first provide a formalization of the individual determination of the majority threshold, showing that it depends positively on (both risk and) ambiguity aversion, relying on a second-order expected utility model. We experimentally test these predictions by integrating the majority threshold implication into traditional experiments for risk and ambiguity elicitation. Through a series of classroom experiments run on 2020-2024 (about 1,200 subjects in Italy & France), we analyze how individuals, placed under varying conditions of uncertainty, react to the determination of a barrier threshold. We find a strong correlation between the number of voters and the chosen quorum for a majority: as each subject is only aware of her own voting preference, expanding the electoral base results in a more ambiguous probability about the outcome. This favors more conservative behavior and results in an upward adjustment of the majority threshold.

Biography: Giuseppe Attanasi is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Economics at Sapienza University of Rome, where he is affiliated with the Department of Economics and Law. He is an experimental economist with a strong publication record in fields such as psychological game theory, behavioral economics, public economics, and sustainable innovation. His research has appeared in leading peer-reviewed international journals, including the Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Games and Economic Behavior, European Economic Review, and the Journal of Economic Psychology. His work explores topics such as guilt aversion in games, the efficiency of experimental markets, investment decisions under uncertainty, and the social impact of cultural events. He is also the founder of the "Summer School on Psychological Game Theory" in Soleto, an initiative that combines advanced training with experimental research. Additionally, he has organized workshops and interdisciplinary projects focusing on behavioral economics and social innovation.

Titolo:   Optimal prevention strategies for reducing claim frequency in risk models with jump clusters

Abstract: Self-protection activities, also called primary prevention measures, are actions taken by a protection buyer facing a loss risk to reduce the probability that a loss happens.  We investigate the optimal self-protection problem, from the point of view of an insurance buyer, when the loss process is described by a Cox-shot-noise process and a Hawkes process with an exponential memory kernel. The model we propose exhibits jump clustering features and is well suited to describe extreme weather events, which look to occur more and more often in recent times with environment deteriorations and climate change. The insurance buyer chooses both the percentage of insured losses and the prevention effort. The latter term refers to actions aimed at reducing the frequency of the claim arrivals. The problem consists in maximizing the expected exponential utility of terminal wealth, in presence of a terminal reimbursement. We show that this problem can be formulated in terms of a suitable backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE), for which we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution.  We discuss the structure of the optimal effort for some special cases.

Biography: Claudia Ceci è Professoressa Ordinaria di Metodi Matematici per l’Economia, le Scienze Attuariali e Finanziarie presso l’Università Sapienza di Roma dal 2022. In precedenza, ha ricoperto incarichi accademici presso l'Università “G. d'Annunzio” di Chieti-Pescara e l'Università di Firenze. Laureata in Matematica con lode alla Sapienza, ha conseguito un dottorato in Probabilità. La sua ricerca si concentra su filtraggio, controllo stocastico e ottimizzazione in finanza e assicurazioni, con particolare attenzione a mercati incompleti e modelli con informazione parziale. Ha partecipato a numerosi progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali, coordinandone diversi. Ha insegnato in vari corsi universitari e supervisionato dottorandi. È attivamente coinvolta in comitati scientifici di convegni internazionali e attività editoriali per riviste internazionali.

Titolo:  L’equazione del clima – Storia e prospettive della rappresentazione fisico-matematica delle dinamiche dell’atmosfera del clima

Abstract: Il cambiamento climatico è un problema di dimensioni epocali e planetarie, tra i più sfidanti che l’umanità si trovi oggi a dover affrontare. Possiamo osservarne sempre più chiaramente le evidenze, non solo attraverso la misura delle variabili fisiche e chimiche, ma anche notando gli innumerevoli impatti socio-economici e geo-politici che questo cambiamento determina. Ci siamo inoltrati in un crescendo di situazioni meteo-climatiche che l’umanità non aveva mai sperimentato prima, e riusciamo a prevederne solo in parte, e con notevoli incertezze, gli sviluppi. Ciò dipende sia dai limiti delle nostre capacità osservative, sia dalla intrinseca complessità del sistema climatico terrestre, che costituisce esso stesso una sfida per la nostra conoscenza scientifica. Tuttavia, mentre da un lato lo sviluppo tecnologico sta enormemente accrescendo le nostre capacità di misurare sempre più precisamente ed estesamente le grandezze in gioco e offre crescenti disponibilità di risorse di calcolo per simulare sempre meglio le dinamiche del sistema, rimangono vari aspetti che ancora eludono la nostra piena comprensione dei processi in gioco. Nel seminario si offrirà una panoramica degli sviluppi recenti nella rappresentazione fisicomatematica delle dinamiche dell’atmosfera e del clima, delle questioni scientifiche ancora aperte e dei possibili sviluppi futuri.

Biography: Dino Zardi, nato a Mantova nel 1966, si è laureato in Fisica presso l'Università di Bologna nel 1991 e ha conseguito un dottorato di ricerca in Idrodinamica nel 1995 all'Università di Genova. Attualmente è professore associato alla Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Trento, dove insegna Fisica dell'Atmosfera, Meteorologia e Laboratorio di Fisica Ambientale.

Fa parte del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale, dove coordina il Gruppo di Fisica dell'Atmosfera. La sua ricerca si concentra principalmente sui processi della bassa atmosfera, con particolare attenzione alla turbolenza e ai venti generati dal ciclo diurno di riscaldamento e raffreddamento del suolo, soprattutto in aree di terreno complesso come le valli alpine. Inoltre, ha avviato un progetto di recupero, ricostruzione e analisi di serie storiche di dati meteorologici per lo studio dei cambiamenti climatici.

Le sue attività di ricerca si inseriscono in numerosi progetti finanziati da enti diversi. In particolare, è direttore del progetto internazionale FORALPS (www.foralps.net), finanziato dall'Unione Europea nell'ambito del programma Interreg Spazio Alpino.

Titolo: : Un’idea matematica di Klaus Hasselmann, premio Nobel 2021 per le ricerche sul clima.

Abstract: Klaus Hasselmann, nel 1976, pubblicò un lavoro abbastanza rivoluzionario, dal titolo “Stochastic Climate Models. Part I, Theory”. Che certe serie storiche legate al clima presentino fluttuazioni apparentemente casuali non stupisce, se non altro perché si tratta di dati sperimentali, e relativi ad un problema molto complesso. La spiegazione data da Hasselmann però è particolarmente profonda, addirittura per certi versi quasi contro intuitiva, basata brillantemente sull'analogia col comportamento di un sistema di molecole. Hasselmann riesce poi a ricavare equazioni assai ben calibrate. Nel seminario illustreremo sia le idee intuitive alla base della teoria di Hasselmann sia, senza addentrarci in tecnicismi, un esempio legato ai cosiddetti Energy Balance Models, che solo grazie all’idea di Hasselmann prendono una forma tale da permettere di spiegare qualitativamente un fenomeno della massima importanza: che l’aumentare della concentrazione di CO2 non ha solo, come conseguenza, l’aumento medio di varie grandezze, ma anche delle loro fluttuazioni. Spiega ad esempio, qualitativamente, perché osserviamo un aumento della variabilità della temperatura, oltre che un aumento della temperatura media, cosa che influisce ancor maggiormente sull'aumento della frequenza di eventi estremi.

Biography: Franco Flandoli è professore di Probabilità e Statistica presso la Scuola Normale Superiore, precedentemente all'Università di Torino e all'Università di Pisa.

Oltre all'attività di ricerca passata e recente sulla teoria del controllo ottimale, sui sistemi dinamici casuali, sulle equazioni differenziali parziali stocastiche e sulla teoria della regolarizzazione mediante rumore, sui sistemi di particelle interagenti e sul loro limite macroscopico, sulle applicazioni in biomedicina, vulcanologia e cambiamenti climatici, aree in cui in alcuni casi lavora tuttora.

Attualmente il suo interesse principale è la meccanica stocastica dei fluidi e la turbolenza, argomenti sui quali sta lavorando con un gruppo di giovani collaboratori nell'ambito della sovvenzione avanzata dell'ERC denominata NoisyFluids. In questo ambito, il suo interesse principale è la comprensione dell'impatto delle piccole strutture turbolente su grandi scale e sulle particelle incorporate.

Una parte importante della sua attività è dedicata alla formazione di giovani ricercatori, Master, PhD e post doc.

Titolo: Detecting and Attributing Change in Climate and Complex Systems: Foundations, Green's Functions, and Nonlinear Fingerprints

Abstract: Detection and attribution (D&A) studies are cornerstones of climate science, providing crucial evidence for policy decisions. Their goal is to link observed climate change patterns to anthropogenic and natural drivers via the optimal fingerprinting method (OFM). We show that response theory for nonequilibrium systems offers the physical and dynamical basis for OFM, including the concept of causality used for attribution. Our framework clarifies the method's assumptions, advantages, and potential weaknesses. We use our theory to perform D&A for prototypical climate change experiments performed on an energy balance model and on a low-resolution coupled climate model. We also explain the underpinnings of degenerate fingerprinting, which offers early warning indicators for tipping points. Finally, we extend the OFM to the nonlinear response regime. Our analysis shows that OFM has broad applicability across diverse stochastic systems influenced by time-dependent forcings, with potential relevance to ecosystems, quantitative social sciences, and finance, among others.

Biography: Valerio Lucarini received a BSc and MSc in Physics at the University of Pisa and Scuola Normale Superiore in 1999. Subsequently he obtained a MSc in Climate Physics and Chemistry at MIT in 2002, and obtained a PhD in Physics at the University of Eastern Finland in 2003. After having held the chair in theoretical meteorology at the University of Hamburg between 2011-2016, since 2017 VL has been professor of statistical mechanics and director of the Centre for the Mathematics of Planet Earth at the University of Reading. He is fellow of the Royal Met. Society and of the Inst. of Math. and Applications. He has authored two books and about 140 papers in peer-reviewed journals in applied mathematics, climate science, climate modelling, statistical mechanics, extreme value theory, dynamical systems, condensed matter physics. VL has been organiser or co-organiser of more than 60 international conferences/workshops/sessions, including programmes at the I. Newton Institute and H. Poincaré Institute and advanced schools in Les Houches and Cargèse, and has given more than 70 invited presentations. He has been member of the editorial board of Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics, Earth System Dynamics, Chaos, Physical Review E, and of two Springer book series. VL has supervised 15 PDRAs, 15 PhD students and more than 15 research students. He is recipient of the 2010 Arne Richter Award and of the 2020 Richardson Medal of the Eur. Geosci. Union, of the 2018 Whitehead Prize of the London Math. Society, of the 2021 Lorenz Lecture Award of the American Geophysical Union, and of the 2022 SIAM Mathematics of Planet Earth Prize. His research is currently funded by the EU through the Horizon 2020 project TiPES and the Marie Curie ITN CriticalEarth, and by EPSRC through the project EP/T018178/1. VL held an ERC Standard investigator Grant in 2010-2015 and has been directly responsible for research funds totalling over 8M Euros, obtained from national, EU, and international funders.

Titolo: Some perspective on climate change through energy balance models

Abstract: In this seminar, I will present how Energy Balance Models (EBMs) can be used to explore climate change dynamics. The first part focuses on ongoing research that investigates a fast-slow system where solar radiation acts as the fast component, while a zero-dimensional EBM describes the slow component. This model exhibits mathematical parallels with the seminal stochastic EBM inspired by Hasselmann's proposal, and we explore these similarities in terms of deterministic limits, fluctuations, and large deviations. 

In the second part, if time allows, I will discuss a completed research project that extends the analysis of 1D EBMs by introducing local instability effects and additive white noise. The model captures the super-greenhouse effect, a tropical feedback mechanism, and incorporates fast weather fluctuations as white noise. By studying the long-term behaviour of the model's invariant measure, we investigate the link between increased greenhouse gas concentrations and extreme weather events. 

Biography: Gianmarco Del Sarto graduated in Mathematics from the University of Pisa in 2021 with a thesis on climate tipping points. Afterwards, he continued his education with a National Doctorate in Sustainable Development and Climate Change, between IUSS Pavia and Scuola Normale Superiore, working under the supervision of Franco Flandoli. Since October 2024, he has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany), where he is part of Matthias Hieber's group in the project Mathematical Study of Geophysical Flow Models (DFG FOR 5528). His main interest is the qualitative study of certain aspects of climate change, such as extreme events and tipping points, using elementary climate models.

Titolo: Carbon neutrality and net-zero in compliance markets

Abstract: In the pursuit of climate risk mitigation, the primary objective is to achieve climate neutrality. Our initial analysis focuses on the impact of carbon neutrality policies on a system of polluting companies regulated within an Emissions Trading System (ETS) carbon market. These companies are required to reduce emissions and are given the option to trade carbon allowances for compliance purposes. Additionally, they may receive extra allowances as subsidies from the regulatory authority to aid in meeting compliance. The key innovation of our approach is that we obtain closed-form results for compliance in each scenarios, as opposed to merely in expectation. For a given subsidies scheme, a unique, analytic equilibrium is reached. The resulting allowances price admits a neat expression as a convex combination of each company’s marginal costs, each calculated based on their predicted emissions imbalance. Also, the individual company’s optimal abatement and trading strategies admit an explicit and intuitive decomposition in terms of their emissions imbalance and the equilibrium price. This framework is highly flexible, enabling the exploration of the impacts of various policies in alignment with the regulator’s additional priorities.

The more ambitious net-zero goal is obtained as a special case. In here, companies

cannot benefit from carbon allowances and they must effectively neutralize all their carbon footprint. The problem is now at the individual company level, and we present a closedform solution for the optimal reduction. We illustrate the results with numerical example.

Biography: Sara Biagini is an associate professor at LUISS Guido Carli. Before coming to LUISS, she worked as an assistant at the University of Pisa from 2008 to 2015 and at the University of Perugia from 2002 to 2008. SB received his PhD in Mathematics for Finance with full marks and honours from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in 2005, after having graduated in Mathematics from the University of Pisa in 1999, again with full marks and honours. Her research interests include, among others, climate change and energy markets, portfolio optimisation in incomplete markets, model risk and risk measures. Sara Biagini is an Associate Editor of several journals such as Mathematical Finance, International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance and Review of Derivatives Research.She has also been a frequent guest lecturer at prestigious institutions such as Princeton University, Imperial College, Paris Dauphine, Oslo Academy of Sciences, London School of Economics and others. Her extensive teaching portfolio includes undergraduate and postgraduate courses at LUISS, the University of Pisa, Princeton University and the University of Perugia.

Titolo: Optimal Control and Differential Games for Pollution Management and Climate Agreements.

Abstract: Over the last decade, pollution and climate change have become a research focus across several disciplines.

To our knowledge, few papers consider the problems of designing international environmental policies in the framework of dynamic optimal control/game theory (typically under strong linearity assumptions).

Our papers are an attempt to study the problem in a more general nonlinear context, while, at the same time, retaining tractability. We expose the models, some ideas for their solution in simple cases, some first insights, and some open problems.

Biography: Fausto Gozzi is an applied mathematician with expertise in Control Theory, Partial Differential Equations, Stochastic Analysis, and, more recently, Differential Games and Mean Field Games. FG has published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals in his career, 39 in the last decade. In particular, he has published in journals of general mathematics, economic theory, operations research, control and optimization, financial mathematics, mathematical analysis, and probability. FG is also coauthor of the first comprehensive survey monograph on Stochastic Control in Infinite Dimensions. FG gave invited seminars/short courses at various congresses and universities (e.g. London School of Economics, Georgia Tech, Imperial College, Bielefeld University, IHP Paris, Bocconi University).

Titolo: Long-time behaviour of stochastic geophysical fluid dynamics models

Abstract: The introduction of random perturbations by noise in partial differential equations has proven extremely useful to understand more about long-time behaviour in complex systems like atmosphere and ocean dynamics or global temperature. Considering additional transport by noise in fluid models has been shown to induce convergence to stationary solutions with enhanced dissipation, under specific conditions. On the other hand, the presence of simple additive forcing by noise helps to find a stationary distribution (invariant measure) for the system and understand how this distribution changes with respect to changes in model parameters (response theory). I will discuss these approaches with a multi-layer quasi-geostrophic model as example.

Biography: Giulia Carigi ha conseguito la laurea magistrale in matematica a Bologna per poi diventare una studentessa del centro di dottorato "Mathematics of Planet Earth" dell'università di Reading e Imperial college London. Ha effettuato un breve periodo di ricerca allo UK Met Office, ente metereologico del Regno Unito.  Alla fine del dottorato ha vinto una Early Career Fellowship della London Mathematical Society per un postdoc a Reading. E' assegnista di ricerca all'università dell'Aquila, nel gruppo di fisica matematica e probabilità, dal maggio del 2022.

Titolo: Wind waves and air-sea interactions across various scales. Observational, analytical, and numerical limits.

Abstract:  Air-Sea feedback play a crucial role in the energy exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean. These environments influence each other through the interface that separates them, the sea surface. It is characterized by strong spatial and temporal variability across scales and timescales. Limited observations, numerical limitations, and often, unrealistic parameterizations, can shows errors that dramatically affect predictions from local, short-term, up to climatological scales. This presentation will discuss the main physical and numerical problems, and repercussions, that characterize this field.

Biography: Antonio Ricchi ha conseguito la laurea magistrale in Navigation Science and Technologies  all'Università di Napoli "Parthenope". Ha conseguito il titolo di dottore di ricerca in "Life and Environmental Science "  presso l'università politecnica delle Marche. E' attualmente RTD-B presso il Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiche e Chimiche, Università dell'Aquila. La sua attività di ricerca si concentra sullo studio delle retroazioni che si verificano all'interfaccia aria-mare e sul ruolo del contenuto di calore dell'oceano e dei campi di onde nella genesi di eventi estremi atmosferici (e marini), sia dal punto di vista fisico, sia dal punto di vista climatologico a breve termine.

Anche oggi stiamo assistendo a cambiamenti sempre più rapidi e intensi del clima, generati probabilmente dall’intervento umano per la prima volta nella storia del nostro pianeta. Ma come si può stabilire quale fosse la temperatura terrestre mille, diecimila, centomila anni fa o ancora più indietro nel tempo? La domanda non è solo motivata dalla curiosità: ricostruendo la temperatura del passato possiamo individuare possibili anomalie nel presente.

Uno strumento molto utile per lo studio del paleoclima sono le analisi degli strati di ghiaccio più antico - anche se pure questi depositi di storia planetaria si vanno facendo sempre più rari. Come poter dedurre informazioni sulla temperatura dell’intero pianeta da misure che coinvolgono necessariamente solo alcune regioni e solo in alcuni intervalli temporali? A queste domande cercano di rispondere i matematici che studiano il clima. Naturalmente, è necessario avere un modello ben formulato, non eccessivamente complesso perché possa essere studiato teoricamente, ma opportunamente calibrato perché possa cogliere le caratteristiche piu salienti della dinamica del clima.In questa conferenza vedremo come si possono usare a questo scopo i modelli di bilancio energetico, che furono introdotti negli anni ’60 da russi e americani per studiare gli effetti del cosiddetto inverno nucleare. Vedremo come questi modelli ci hanno svelato segreti di un passato molto lontano del nostro pianeta, e come ci aiutano a capire quali impatti possa avere sul clima di domani la variazione di determinati agenti climatici, quali l'irradiazione solare o la quantità di gas serra presenti in atmosfera.

Biography: Piermarco Cannarsa, allievo della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, si è laureato in Matematica nel 1979 e si è poi spostato all’Università di Roma Tor Vergata, dapprima come ricercatore e in seguito come professore ordinario di Analisi matematica (1990). Le sue ricerche si sono incentrate sulle equazioni alle derivate parziali, sull’analisi funzionale e sulla teoria matematica dei controlli. Nominato nel 1999 vicepresidente dell’Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica (INdAM, incarico mantenuto per otto anni), è co-autore di diversi saggi, fra i quali si ricordano "Semiconcave functions, Hamilton-Jacobi equations and optimal control" (2004), "Introduzione alla teoria della misura e all’analisi funzionale" (2008) e "New trends in direct, inverse, and control problems for evolution equations" (2011). Già coordinatore del Gruppo di Ricerca Europeo italo-francese sul "Controllo delle equazioni alle derivate parziali" (GDRE CONEDP) e membro del comitato di redazione di diverse riviste specialistiche, nel 2012 C. è entrato a far parte della commissione scientifica dell’Unione Matematica Italiana (per il triennio 2012-15). È stato eletto Presidente dell'Unione Matematica Italiana (UMI) per il triennio 2018-2021 e, nuovamente, per il triennio 2021-2024.

Titolo: Metastabilità, eventi rari e implicazioni (per il clima e non solo)

Abstract: L'impatto degli eventi climatici estremi è spesso dominato dagli eventi più rari. Questi eventi hanno tempi di ritorno (una misura della frequenza con cui si verificano in media) estremamente lunghi, ma possono verificarsi in qualsiasi momento e sono poco conosciuti a causa della mancanza di statistiche. In questo contesto utilizzare modelli matematici e sfruttare la potenza di calcolo dei moderni super-calcolatori diventa cruciale al punto che lo studio degli eventi estremi e della loro evoluzione dal punto di vista matematico/modellistico può essere considerato una delle più importanti sfide scientifiche attuali. Tuttavia, data la complessità dei modelli climatici, la difficoltà è quella di poter eseguire simulazioni sufficientemente lunghe da estrarre l’informazione statistica necessaria. 

In fisica, chimica e biologia, sono stati recentemente sviluppati algoritmi per calcolare le probabilità di eventi rari che non possono essere osservati nelle simulazioni numeriche dirette. In questo contesto, partendo dall’esperienza dell’autore in un settore applicativo diverso, questo intervento intende presentare una rassegna di queste moderne tecniche computazionali che possono essere utilizzare per predire la frequenza degli eventi rari in modali matematici di sistemi che presentano metastabilità. Verrà brevemente illustrato il fondamento teorico degli approcci considerati e si discuteranno alcuni esempi in parte tratti dai lavori dello stesso autore ma in più larga misura da contributi presi dalla letteratura specializzata nell’ambito dei modelli matematici per il clima.

Biography: Carlo Massimo Casciola  è   professore ordinario di Fluidodinamica presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica e Aerospaziale della Sapienza, dove coordina un gruppo di ricerca che lavora sulla fluidodinamica dei flussi complessi. Ha  ricevuto un significativo finanziamento in ambito europeo   con il prestigioso ERC Advanced-Grant per la ricerca innovativa con il progetto "BIC - Cavitation across scales: following Bubbles from Inception to Collapse" (2013). Successivamente l’ERC ha finanziato il progetto "INVICTUS - In Vitro Cavitation through Ultrasound". Ha coordinato fino al 2017 il Dottorato di Ricerca in Meccanica Teorica e Applicata e la Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria delle Nanotecnologie. Attualmente è Preside della Facoltà di Ingegneria Civile e Industriale della Sapienza. E’ membro dei comitati editoriali di International Journal of Multiphase Flows, Flow, Turbulence and Combustion; Acta Mechanica.
