I bought a few backup MP3 players on Amazon. But (yes, stupidly), I never tested them out at the time of purchase. Well past the deadline for returns. When I plug them in, using the included USB cord, the PC makes the usual 'chime' that indicates a new external device has been plugged in. BUT...nothing ever shows up in any of the various places where Windows 10 allows me to view the different internal and external drives. I've tried 6 different USB cords. Tried all 4 USB ports. I only get that "something's been connected to me" sound from the computer as soon as the USB cord is inserted (or removed), but no visual evidence of this new drive/device. And if a new drive does not show up under MY PC, then of course there's no way to copy my music files to the MP3 player.

Assume that the player uses a memory card. Load some music on the card using a card reader and then test. Your symptoms sound like external DVD players that chime when connected but don't show up until a DVD is inserted into the drive.

LOL. No, no need for secrecy on my part. I didn't give the name, because, frankly, I can't find it on the box. Maybe it's called "Music Smart." There are lots of Chinese characters, but of course I have no idea what those say/mean. I did not want to write, in my OP, "These players are cheap Chinese devices . . ." as that seemed to come off as potentially bigoted to my eyes, and I decided to err on the side of caution.

I completely agree that even the cheapest player (if working properly) will always appear as a separate drive. It was a new player in 2021. I had bought 3 of the same model, and the first one worked perfectly (and still works perfectly). It's why I never bothered to test out the other two...I stupidly assumed that all 3 would work just as well as the one I did try out.

These cost me about $10 USD each. So, not a horribly expensive lesson, if they end up going directly into the dustbin. This model has only internal memory. (I have read about outright scams, where players are supposed to have internal memory, but do not . . . or have inferior memory installed. But again; since the first one did/does work perfectly, my thoughts did not go to 'intentional scam.'

Thank godness that this was not an expensive lesson. But a worthwhile one...with electronics, there really is no excuse for not checking each item, to ensure that it works. The fact that this company no longer can do business on Amazon is probably a tip-off that the quality (or company honesty) was a widespread and enduring issue. Even if the company was deliberately trying to cheat me; it's still totally my fault for not opening up each box and plugging in each player. That mistake is on me. ff782bc1db
