As of version 1.9.4, gretl requires Windows XP or higher and a processor that supports theSSE2 instruction set. SSE2 support is found in all modern processors; it is absent in AMD CPUsprior to the Athlon 64, and in Intel CPUs prior to the Pentium 4. For versions of gretl thatwill run on older systems, see below.

If you have no administrator rights on Windows you should use a zip file;unzip this in any location where you have writepermission. Note: you must preserve the internal directorystructure of the archive or gretl will not work. In unzipping programsthis option may be called "enable folders". The whole archive is in adirectory calledgretl. For example, if you unzip the archive into a directory namedc:\userdata, the gretl GUI program will be atc:\userdata\gretl\gretl.exe.

The current "snapshot" of gretl is more up to date than the release: often it will contain bug-fixes but sometimes it will contain newly introduced bugs. To see what'snew in the snapshot, take a look at the Change log(the "in progress" entry).

Besides English, gretl supports French, Italian, Spanish, German,Basque, Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Czech, Albanian, Russian and Traditional Chinese. Normally it shouldn't be necessary to do anything special to get gretl to appear in the local language: the program comes with the full set of translations, and they should be used automatically, based on the language setting of your computer. In somecircumstances, however, it may be necessary to adjust your languagesetting to achieve the expected effect. This can be donein the Windows control panel.

When updating an existing installation of gretl, it's a goodidea to first run the uninstaller programunins000.exe, which you should find in the main gretlfolder. This will ensure that you don't get odd behavior due to"stale" DLLs or Windows registry settings. Note that running theuninstaller will not touch any files you have created in thegretl/user folder, but it will erase any customizationsyou have made using the Preferences menu so you'll have tore-establish these when you start the new version of the program.

The most recent biennial gretl conference (the eighth) took place in Gdask on June 15-16, 2023. The 2021 conference was slated to be in London, but due to the Covid pandemic it was held online via Zoom. If you're on Linux and want to build the most recent version of gretl, this tarball will automate most of the work (we assume you know what you're doing; anyway, a README file is included): buildgretl.tar.gz

Gretl calls gnuplot to generate graphs. We require gnuplotversion 5.2 (released in September 2017) or higher. Seegnuplot.sourceforge.net.The gretl packages for MS Windows and OS X include a gnuplot versionthat works well with gretl. Reasonably current Linux distributions shouldalso offer a suitable version of the program.

The gretl manual comes in three PDF files, a User's Guide,a Command Reference and a Hansl primer. Englishversions of these, formatted for U.S. letter-size paper, are includedin the gretl source package and binary distributions. Gretl willaccess other available versions on demand, via the Internet. You canalso find the manual fileshere.

If you use gretl you may wish to join thegretl-users mailing list.This is a moderate-volume list where people request and offer help, discussnew features and so on.There's also a gretl-announce list;this is a read-only list which sends out announcements on the occasion of new releases ofgretl.

The most obvious way of contributing your expertise to gretl development is by writing a function package (using gretl's scripting language, hansl). You can see a listing of current packages here. A quick Guide to producing function packages is available (thanks, Stefano Fachin!).

If by any chance you're a C coder then contributions to the underlying gretl library would also be welcome. The only non-negotiable requirement on C code that can be contributed to gretl is that you must be willing to have it appear under the GNU General Public License (GPL), that is, you must be comfortable with having the source released.

Many people have sent in useful bug reports and suggestions for gretl'sdevelopment. Alternative download: if you use MacPorts (or want to try it), builds of gretl are available for all Mac architectures at macports.org. These builds are not made by the gretl team and don't include some "extras" supplied with our own builds, but they're done very professionally.

Theselected gretl package file should appear in your Downloads after a shortwhile, or it may be opened by the Installer program right away.If the package is not opened automatically, minimize your browser window soyou can see what's happening on your desktop, then double-click on the gretlfile in Downloads to open the installer. Either way, you should then bewalked through the installation process. If Apple's security system stopsyou from opening a gretl package, pleaselook here for guidance on what to do.

After installing gretl, navigate to Applications in the Finder andyou should see a gretl icon there. Double-clicking should startgretl. Assuming gretl starts OK, you can drag its icon from Applicationsonto the dock to get a quick-launcher.

In 2022 and 2023 there have been (rare) reports that gretl on MacOS was failing to start, after an update of some kind. If you experience this issue, please open a Terminal window and execute the following command (which renames your prior gretl configuration file so that gretl will not read it on start-up): mv ~/.gretl2rc ~/old_gretl2rc.txt The gretl team is still investigating what exactly is causing the problem (and which part of the configuration file plays a role in it). We would appreciate if you could report whether this interim solution works for you, and we'd be very interested to see the renamed file, old_gretl2rc.txt. Please add a comment to the corresponding bug ticket (even if it is closed), or send a message to the mailing list.

You may wish to install X-13-ARIMA-SEATS and/or TRAMO/SEATS. Theseare specialized programs for analysis of seasonal time series data, in64-bit macOS versions compatible with gretl. They can be installed bytyping the appropriate command in the "gretl console" in the GUIprogram, as follows.

It has both a graphical user interface (GUI) and a command-line interface. It is written in C, uses GTK+ as widget toolkit for creating its GUI, and calls gnuplot for generating graphs. The native scripting language of gretl is known as hansl (see below); it can also be used together with TRAMO/SEATS, R, Stata, Python, Octave, Ox and Julia.

It includes natively all the basic statistical techniques employed in contemporary Econometrics and Time-Series Analysis. Additional estimators and tests are available via user-contributed function packages, which are written in hansl.[2]gretl can output models as LaTeX files.

Besides English, gretl is also available in Albanian, Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Czech, French, Galician, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese (both varieties), Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian.

A review also appeared in the Journal of Statistical Software[7] in 2008. Since then, the journal has featured several articles in which gretl is used to implement various statistical techniques.

Random Number Generation (RNG) in gretl has been examined and tested in Yalta & Schreiber (2012).[10] The authors conclude "Our results show that the RNG related procedures in gretl are implemented soundly and perform well in the three crush test suites of the TestU01".

Due to its libre nature and the breadth of econometric techniques it contains, gretl is widely used for teaching econometrics, from the undergraduate level onwards. Datasets in gretl format are available for several popular textbooks. 006ab0faaa
