At Greenwich High School, many students seek out opportunities to volunteer. By volunteering, students get the chance to learn new skills and strengthen the Greenwich community. Volunteering gives students the chance to explore new passions, give back to those in need, as well as gain communication skills when working with others, take on leadership roles and learn responsibility. On the GHS website under the section “student life”, students can find a wide range of volunteer opportunities that cater to their interests. Throughout the year, many organizations are looking for student help.
Whether you’re passionate about working with animals, helping the elderly, or supporting the youth, there’s somewhere for you to volunteer. For example, the non profit organization Person to Person constantly offers multiple opportunities to volunteer. Their goal as a charity is to provide food assistance, clothing and care, emergency assistance and more. A volunteer's role at Person to Person could be sorting through donations, helping clients shop in the food pantry, or volunteering at the mobile food truck. If interested, look at the one time volunteer opportunities sheet or go to the Person to Person website at https://p2phelps.org/.
Their locations in Darien, Stamford and Norwalk make this a great opportunity. A nearby opportunity for those without cars is at the Greenwich Public Library located at 101 West Putnam Ave. After completing a short 30 minute orientation, students are able to volunteer anytime the library is open. While GHS doesn't have a yearly requirement for service hours, many optional courses do. The junior year civics course requires 5 hours completed the semester the class is taken. Also, the GHS chapter of the National Honor Society requires service hours, making these opportunities a great way to fulfill this requirement. Students are encouraged to explore these opportunities and make an impact on the community.
