The first thing my friend Maria Gonzalez said to me when I told her I was going to GHS was, “You are going to get addicted to the muffins!” Obviously, on the first day of freshman year, I rushed to the Cardinal Café, only to realize I had forgotten to add money to my account, and left disappointed. The next day—with money this time—I went ahead and bought not one but two muffins. It's safe to say that it wasn't disappointing this time; it was like love at first sight.
Every day, from morning until the end of lunch, the Cardinal Cafe is buzzing with energy. There are dozens of students there, getting breakfast, lunch, or even just a snack. But we all know the most popular attraction: the muffins. Whether you eat them in the morning on an empty stomach, or in between classes, the muffins are always a popular demand. Students love the muffins; as freshman Jules Yontorno said,“The muffins are exquisite.” Her friends nodded along in agreement. Another student, who asked to remain anonymous, described the muffins as “deliciously awesome,” earning a couple of odd looks from passersby for her choice of wording. Nevertheless, the students love the muffins.
You may wonder why people think they’re so good. Perhaps it's the sweetness of the chocolate chips combined with the buttery taste of the muffin. Maybe it's simply the mouth-watering smell. No one really knows. What we do know is that they have been a popular demand for a while now.
We know how the muffins are very popular and delicious, but are they healthy? Of course not. Even a cafeteria worker said that she would not recommend eating the muffin more than once a week. Even though the muffin sizes have been reduced, they are still filled with a lot of sugar, which contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle. But for a small sweet treat after a hard day or a complicated test, they are perfect, and have been a staple in GHS culture and tradition.
