Most high schoolers are required to take science classes some time before graduating high school to get an understanding of the world we live in. However, not all high schools require the same science curriculum. So, what really goes on inside of the GHS Science Department?
9th graders are required to take Biology while 10th graders are required to take Chemistry. However, 11th and 12th graders fall into another category. 11th graders are required to take any NGSS science course of their choosing. NGSS courses are essential and required for 11th graders because they prepare juniors for the NGSS test, a GHS graduation requirement that evaluates students’ performance abilities in science. 12th graders can “take any of the elective or AP courses” (Greenwich High School).
Science at GHS is a program that is “designed for students with a broad range of needs and interests in science” (GHS). Some students adore science and spend every waking moment exploring the world. On the other hand, some students do not have a passion like these other students. Science is a part of this whole other world that allows us to understand ourselves and other things in the world.
How could a GHS student expand their wisdom in science? GHS offers a variety of science classes aside from the NGSS required courses, such as Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Behavior, Forensic Science, Biochemistry, Science Research, and Seasonal Horticulture. If you would like to take a class that counts toward NGSS, there are a lot more: Astronomy, Environmental Experiences, Marine Biology, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, and AP Physics courses. Depending on what you are interested in, there is a great assortment of science classes.
Interested or want to expand your horizon in science but these classes don’t fulfill your interest? There are always clubs! For instance, Bird Watching, Cancer Awareness and Support, Care for Healthcare, Computer Science (though it does lean more into math), Environmental Action, Exploring the Biomedical Universe, Habitat For Humanity, Pre-Med, Robotics Club, Science Team, and Serving in Stem. On top of these clubs, there are additional science clubs that align more with classes that you can take during the school day at GHS. Such as Anatomy & Physiology, Anatomy/Rocketry, Biology, and Physics.
Science is such an interesting and fun way to learn about why and how things happen. If you haven't already expanded your world to a bit of science, whether inside or outside of the classroom, try it out. You might enjoy it!
