School safety isn’t just the responsibility of our teachers or security. It’s everyone's responsibility. Every choice we make can help protect our school community or put it in danger. There are many simple but important ways we can all help keep our school safe.
Firstly, don’t prop or leave doors open. When a door is left open, anyone can enter the building, which poses a security risk to the whole school. In addition, visitors, parents, and students should always enter through the main entrance. All visitors must sign in through the office. The only other available entrance for students is the double doors by the gym during arrival and dismissal. Students should also never let someone into the building if they do not know them. For underclassmen especially, leaving campus during school hours is not only against school policy but also a safety concern.
Of course, physical safety isn’t the only kind. Online safety is also a prevalent issue. When posting on social media platforms such as Instagram, Tiktok, or Snapchat, it is important not to publicize your location or where you attend school. It brings danger to the entire building when anyone online knows who attends Greenwich High School. Reporting cyberbullying also helps keep our school safe. Harmful content online threatening or bullying other students at GHS should be reported. By using online platforms safely and responsibly, everyone is able to feel safe in our community.
If students see any suspicious activity, they should speak to a staff member or report using the Anonymous Alerts system. Anonymous Alerts allow students or parents to anonymously report issues quickly to school officials. An anonymous alert can be made using the web link found on the GHS website or by downloading the app on the Apple Store or Google Play. The Anonymous Alert section can be found on the GHS website under the section “Student Life.”
Taking our safety seriously helps prepare us for the event of a real emergency. Keeping our school safe isn’t about being fearful, but about awareness. When we follow these rules, we protect our peers, teachers and ourselves. It only takes one door left open or one unchecked visitor to create a problem. By staying mindful and responsible, we can help create a school environment where everyone feels secure and focused on learning.
