Our Mission For Every Child
The mission of Odyssey Charter School is to work in partnership with the family and community, with the aim of helping each child reach their full potential in all areas of life. We seek to educate the whole child with the understanding that each person must achieve a balance of intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and social skills as a foundation for life.
Message From Our Founder
Dear Odyssey Families,
Welcome back to an exciting new school year! We are looking forward to working in partnership with you to help each child reach his or her maximum potential.
I am pleased to announce that for the 2023-2024 school year, Odyssey Charter School (OCS), both the elementary and Jr/Sr high earned a school grade of “A” and Odyssey Preparatory Academy earned a grade of “B.” It is worthy to note that only three out of the 23 schools that serve the students of Palm Bay earned a grade of “A” this year, and OCS was tied for first place! We are pleased with our results as approximately half of all schools in Palm Bay earned a grade of “C” this year. There were no traditional junior and senior high schools serving Palm Bay that achieved an “A” grade, except for Odyssey Charter School Jr/Sr.
Congratulations to our students and to the hard-working leaders and staff at each campus who work very hard each day on behalf of the students they serve. It takes an entire community, including our parents, to achieve these academic results. And parents, we are asking for your continued support this year as we help our students achieve their best.
We understand that a school is much more than a grade. Our aim is to provide an exceptional array of educational programs that help our students discover their passions and develop their talents. We are excited about Odyssey’s plans for expansion of services for students in our community which is highlighted in this newsletter. These areas of growth within our schools include additional course offerings and opportunities for students to pursue their areas of interest and prepare for their future studies and/or careers.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education and well-being. We remain honored to serve your family where we are committed to academic excellence and the education of the whole child.
Truly,
Ms. Constance Ortiz
School Founder and CEO of Green Apple School Management

Odyssey Students Shine at Florida Boys & Girls State
This summer, five outstanding male students from Odyssey Charter Jr/Sr High School participated in the prestigious Florida Boys State program, hosted by the American Legion. This program provides high school students with an immersive experience in local, county, and state government.
The students, including Ethan Davis, Lawrence Monk, Caden Harmon, Zachary Tepper, and Christian Schuester spent a week in Tallahassee, engaging in hands-on activities that deepened their understanding of American citizenship. At Boys State, they took on roles as government officials, ran for office, drafted legislation, and learned about legal and parliamentary processes.
Reflecting on his experience, Lawrence Monk said, “Being part of the 80th anniversary of Florida Boys State and the 200th anniversary of Tallahassee was life-changing. I’m honored to have been chosen by Odyssey Charter Jr/Sr High School for this experience, and I’m grateful to the Florida American Legion Boys State for this opportunity.”
In addition to the Boys State participants, two female students from Odyssey attended Girls State, a nonpartisan program run by the American Legion Auxiliary. Since its inception in 1937, Girls State has taught nearly 1 million young women about state and local government through hands-on experiences. Participants spend a week working as self-governing citizens, electing officials and carrying out their duties at various levels of government.
We are incredibly proud of these students for representing Odyssey Charter Jr/Sr High School with distinction. We look forward to nominating more students for Boys and Girls State next year.
Important Update to our Cell Phone Policy
The Odyssey Charter School Board has approved a new cell phone policy for our schools. Please be aware that this may impact you and your child if your child does not adhere to the new policy. We recognize there is a place for cell phones, especially in case of a school emergency. Students are allowed to carry cell phones, but they must be turned off and stored in their backpacks. Cell phones may not be kept in pockets or any other place except the student’s backpack. Please review the updated policy below:
To keep the focus on academics and to reduce unnecessary distractions, the school enforces the following regarding personal cell phone use on school campus:
· Cell phones and all mobile devices shall be turned off when entering school campus.
· Cell phones and all mobile devices shall be kept in a student’s backpack – not in clothing pockets.
· Cell phones and all mobile devices are not allowed to be used in a classroom, library, common areas, or restrooms.
· Cell phones and all mobile devices are not allowed to be used during transition times or between classes.
· Cell phones and all mobile devices can be turned back on at the end of school day, after the last bell, and used to communicate directly with parents/friends who are assisting in transportation.
· If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, they are to ask a teacher permission, get a pass, and come up to the administrative offices.
*Wireless communication devices include but are not limited to, cell phones and/or auxiliary/ancillary devices such as watches and ear buds.
The following actions will be taken if a student violates Odyssey’s cell phone policy:
Consequence #1 – Staff member takes phone for the class period.
Consequence #2 – Staff member takes phone to the Dean to hold for the entire day. Student is responsible to retrieve phone from the Dean at the end of the day.
Consequence #3 – Staff member takes phone and gives it to the Dean. Dean calls parent for pickup. If parent does not pick up, cell phone will be held for 3 days. Student is responsible to retrieve phone from Dean at the end of the 3rd day.
At no time shall Odyssey Charter School, Inc. be responsible for theft, loss or damage of cell phones or other electronic devices brought onto school property. Failure for a student to comply with the cell phone policy may result in suspension.”
The purpose of this policy is twofold. One is to cut back on the numerous interruptions that negatively impact classroom instruction each day with the many distractions and text messages that students receive on their cell phones. The other is our commitment to the ultimate health of our students. Recent studies have shown increasing evidence that smartphones have a number of detrimental effects on our teens, including increased anxiety and depression, a reduction of quality sleep, and a lower satisfaction with life. This research shows an increased impact particularly upon our young teen girls. Recommendations from the research include parents considering the protection of their children before and during puberty by not allowing cell phones until high school. The following are links to a research study and an article that provide more information regarding the impacts of cell phone use on teens:

Odyssey's New Growth and Expansion
Exciting building expansion projects are underway for Odyssey Preparatory Academy (OPA) and Montessori Village Green (MVG)! The creation of a new state-of-the-art building for Odyssey Preparatory Academy will also greatly benefit our students at Odyssey Junior/Senior High as it will allow the school to occupy both floors of the Wyoming campus instead of just the second floor. The additional building space will allow the school to enhance course offerings and provide expanded services to our Jr/Sr High students. Architectural plans are currently being developed for OPA’s new K-8 facility and MVG’s new building for Infants through Voluntary Pre-School (VPK). We are anticipating the opening of these new facilities in the fall of 2026.
Odyssey Preparatory Academy
The building for OPA will be a two-story facility that features a clerestory that brings natural light all the way down to the first floor. It will also include a computer lab as well as additional labs for science, gifted and talented, media, Spanish, and music/band. The field spaces will offer a soccer field, basketball courts, and separate playgrounds for Kindergarten and first grade students, and third through sixth grade students.
As the new OPA facility will expand its services from K-5 to K-8, parents will have the option to allow their children to remain at OPA through grade 8, or they may choose to move their children to Odyssey Jr/Sr High which serves students from grades 6-12. OPA will offer advanced students in grades 6-8 an opportunity to participate in the Cambridge Program.
Odyssey Jr/Sr High Expansion
Upon the opening of the new building for Odyssey Preparatory Academy (OPA), Odyssey Jr/Sr High will increase its College and Technical Education (CTE) offerings with the addition of a Navy ROTC program and the addition of an onsite culinary arts lab (opening in 2027). The first floor of the Wyoming campus will include additional spaces for science labs and innovative course offerings for Jr/Sr high school students. The school will share its plans as they move closer to the date. If you have any ideas for additional course offerings that you would like for us to explore and consider, please email Ms. Constance Ortiz, CEO Green Apple and School Founder, at cortiz@greenappleschools.com.
Montessori Village Green (MVG)
Plans for the construction of a brand new 12,000 square foot building are underway to open an expanded early childhood center on the Eldron campus. The new facility will serve infants beginning at three months of age through pre-kindergarten students in our Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program. The new Montessori Village Green (MVG) site will feature classrooms specifically designed and furnished for young children and will incorporate the Montessori Philosophy of education to promote individualized growth and discovery. MVG will have outdoor learning and play spaces for children. The facility will feature clerestories for natural lighting to provide a warm, welcoming environment. Opening of the new MVG facility is projected for July 2026.
Expansion of Project Lead the Way (PTLW) at Odyssey Schools
Odyssey Charter School has been successfully implementing the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program for over nine years. This year, Odyssey Preparatory Academy will be introducing the PLTW program to its students! This initiative represents a significant step forward in our commitment to providing students with innovative and hands-on learning experiences in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). PLTW is a nationally recognized program where students engage in real-world, applied learning activities that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration.
Highlights of the Odyssey Summer 2024 Enrichment Program
National Inventor’s Hall of Fame
Incoming first through fifth grade students were invited to participate in the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame summer camp this summer. The National Hall of Fame summer camp exposed students to modules that were designed to inspire creativity and develop problem-solving skills through hands-on activities. By providing engaging, hands-on learning experiences and recognizing the achievements of young innovators, the goal of the NIHF summer camp was to help students develop the skills and confidence they need to pursue their own inventive ideas and make a positive impact on the world.
Fourth Grade Summer Acceleration
Ms. Shannon Johnson worked with a group of incoming fourth grade GATEway students this summer to accelerate their learning so that they would be prepared to work on fifth grade math standards this year. Students also participated in daily “tangram” challenges, conducted research through the Renzulli Learning platform, and designed a Rube Goldberg Machine.
A FOCUS ON THE MISSION
Holistic Education
Odyssey offers a holistic education model at its core. Holistic education recognizes that students and adults can work to achieve a balance of intellectual (academic), emotional/social, physical, and spiritual skills as a foundation for life and to become self-actualized.
Self-actualization is the process of realizing your potential and becoming everything you are capable of being. It's a personal journey (or Odyssey) for discovering your passions and talents, and for developing your skills, and using them in the most productive ways.
Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who created Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health focused on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization. Self-actualization is the highest level of his human hierarchy of needs and as we, at Odyssey, work with our children to develop their full potential, we have this in mind.
Positive Discipline in the Classroom
Positive Discipline in the Classroom (an approach developed by Jane Nelson) has been a cornerstone of our school model since the first Odyssey school was opened in 1999. School leaders and staff are deeply committed to developing a positive culture at our schools using this philosophical framework. Nelson’s research shows that a well-developed and positive culture leads to increased student learning. By using strategies within the Positive Discipline framework, classroom communities develop mutual respect. Through focused activities and daily class meetings, students develop a sense of belonging and are brought into an active role in the school or classroom problem-solving process.
During the 2024-2025 school year, Odyssey is reaffirming its commitment to the philosophy of Positive Discipline. We believe that building strong relationships with and among students will lead to happier, more connected individuals, while also enhancing the positive learning environment in our schools. By empowering students to solve problems and develop decision-making and communication skills, we foster a sense of community that prepares them for success in life.
Another key aspect of the Positive Discipline initiative this year is to introduce a shared language to parents. We will host Parent Engagement Family Fun Nights and Zoom training sessions to foster relationships with families and disseminate the principles of positive discipline. Our monthly school-wide newsletters will offer tips and resources for teaching students positive life skills essential for their future success. Parents can earn volunteer hours by participating in any of these events, meetings, or training sessions.
For more information and resources on Positive Discipline, please visit www.positivediscipline.com or contact Mrs. Beth Miller, Director of Curriculum, at bmiller@greenappleschools.com.
ABOUT CHARTER SCHOOLS
What are Charter Schools?
Charter schools are publicly funded, non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations that provide educational services comparable to those offered by district public schools. They are established by a contract and charter application that details the school’s mission, program, students served, and performance goals. All charter school employees must pass national criminal background screening and approvals to hire come through the security office of the school district. Florida Statutes require that teachers employed by or under contract with a charter school be certified in the same manner as all other public school teachers in Florida. Students must take all Florida statewide assessments just like traditional public schools.
Florida has a vibrant and diverse charter school community. In the 2023-2024 school year, 739 public charter schools serving 396,522 students in K-12, operated across 47 Florida counties. Charter schools remain a valued educational option for parents.
Odyssey Charter School, Inc. Board of Directors
The Odyssey Charter School, Inc. Board of Directors is comprised of a group of talented volunteers from the community who have taken on the overall responsibility for the affairs and management of the schools. Our board members this year are Ms. Lesley Maloney, Board President; Mr. Andy Ziegler, Board Vice President; Mr. Conrado Martinez, Board Treasurer; Ms. Amber Miller, Board Secretary; and Mr. Chandler Langevin, Board Member.
The Board is the primary policy-making body and participates in strategic planning for the direction of the schools and ensures, first and foremost, adherence to the mission and vision of our schools.
Research studies conducted in recent years have indicated that charter school students nationwide are outperforming their peers attending traditional public schools. A 2023 study conducted by the Center for Research on Educational Outcomes (CREDO) at Standford University used data from over 1.8 million students at 6,200 charter schools to determine how charter school student performance compared to traditional public school student performance. Results showed that charter schools produced better reading and math scores than traditional public schools. A summary of results of the 2023-2024 standardized test scores published by the Florida Department of Education indicates that students attending charter schools outperformed their peers on both the ELA and Math FAST Assessments.
Green Apple School Management
Green Apple School Management (GA) is a Cognia-accredited charter school support and service organization that works via a performance contract with the Odyssey board of directors. Begun in 2013 by School Founder, Ms. Constance Ortiz, GA provides the schools some district roots and a wide array of services covering primarily mission/academics, financial management/budgeting, new growth and development, and support to the schools’ Local Education Authority. Services include but are not limited to financial management (e.g., budgeting, bookkeeping and financial forecasting); human resource coordination and staffing; academic programming (professional development, curriculum development, coaching, and new teacher support); facilities and new facilities growth and development; strategic planning; charter application development; grant writing; and regulatory compliance monitoring.
GA assists the Board and school administrators in the mission specific development of healthy, holistic educational programs and schools, which include “green” building design, healthy school lunch programs, nutrition education, and holistic education programs. Programs are designed to develop “whole” children through healthy lifestyles as well as educational programs that foster the highest levels of academic achievement, problem solving, critical thinking, and the provision of many opportunities for hands-on application.
According to a recent study conducted by the Center for Research on Educational Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University (2023), schools affiliated with charter management organizations showed greater growth than stand-alone charter schools and the charter school sector as a whole. According to the study, students in charter schools run by a management organization performed better than their traditional public-school peers. The data indicates that charter management organizations have become skilled at taking what works and replicating it successfully.
Introducing Beth Miller
Green Apple School Management is very excited to welcome Mrs. Beth Miller as the newest member of the Green Apple Academic Team. Mrs. Miller joined Green Apple in December 2023 as the Director of Curriculum for Literacy and Social Studies. She has held various leadership positions in Florida and Texas, including serving as Principal of a charter elementary school in Indian River County and Principal of an elementary school and a K-12 school in Texas. Mrs. Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Central Florida and a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University. Mrs. Miller is a proud mother of two college-aged sons. She and her husband are avid travelers who love spending time outdoors, hiking, watching the sunset, and exploring nature together.

Last But Not Least - Your Partnership is Important to Us
In our mission statement, we affirm that we will work in partnership with our families and our community. Building positive and nurturing partnerships with you is vital to the success of your child. Schools, as we all know, are very imperfect places, but are filled primarily with dedicated faculty and staff who strive to educate your children and make a positive impact in the world. Families have many concerns and challenges in today’s world, some are faced with economic challenges, have both parents working, and are doing the best they can in raising their children. When we all strive together to overcome these challenges and to build positive and impactful relationships with one another, our children are the benefactors. We ask that when you have a challenge, that you reach out to the school directly. If you do not make headway with the teacher, then please reach out to guidance or the principal. If you are still not satisfied, please ask the school for their grievance procedure or contact Dr. Monica Knight, Executive Director of Quality Schools and Special Projects, at mknight@greenappleschools.com.
As we begin to plan for the future redesign of our course offerings at the Jr/Sr High, or if you have any suggestions for courses, electives, or clubs you would like to see offered at any of our schools in the future, please email Ms. Constance (Ortiz), Green Apple CEO and School Founder, at cortiz@greenappleschools.com.
