Τίτλος: Advection, diffusion and geometry: a new description of scalar dispersion
Περίληψη: The dispersion of a diffusive scalar released in a fluid flowing through network geometries has numerous applications across science and engineering: from vascular and respiratory flows, to porous media, water distribution, and urban pollution. Homogenisation theory provides a coarse-grained description of the scalar at large times and predicts that it diffuses with a certain effective diffusivity, so the concentration is approximately Gaussian. This description fails to capture the tails of the scalar concentration, however.
This talk addresses this issue and shows how the theory of large deviations can be applied to capture the concentration tails. Through a network model, we discuss the distinct role that geometry and topology plays in the non-Gaussian concentration. We also discuss the implications of the results for front propagation in reacting flows.

Η 12 Μαΐου του 1977 είναι η μέρα που γεννήθηκε η Maryam Mirzakhani. Η Maryam Mirzakhani ήταν Ιρανή Μαθηματικός και Καθηγήτρια Μαθηματικών στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Στάνφορντ. Το 2014, η Maryam Mirzakhani έλαβε το Fields Medal για τις εξαιρετικές συμβολές της στη δυναμική και γεωμετρία των επιφανειών Riemann και των moduli χώρων τους. Έγινε έτσι η πρώτη γυναίκα, και η πρώτη Ιρανή υπήκοος, της οποίας το μαθηματικά κατορθώματα αναγνωρίστηκαν από το κορυφαίο βραβείο μαθηματικών. Πέθανε τραγικά από καρκίνο το 2017 στη νεαρή ηλικία των 40 ετών.
Στις 31 Ιουλίου του 2018, στο Rio de Janeiro, η Επιτροπή Γυναικών της Ιρανικής Μαθηματικής Εταιρείας πρότεινε στους συμμετέχοντες του World Meeting for Women in Mathematics, (WM)², η μέρα γενεθλίων της Maryam Mirzakhani – η 12 Μαΐου – να αναγνωριστεί και να υποστηριχτεί ως μέρα εορτασμού των γυναικών στα Μαθηματικά.
