If you want a rugged, wireless mixing rig that lets you control 16 channels of live sound from anywhere in the room, choose Gravity Mackie DL16S; if you need studio-grade, open-back headphones with magnesium drivers for critical listening and immersive detail, choose Focal Clear Mg Professional.
• Gravity Mackie DL16S: The undisputed king of mobile live sound flexibility with built-in Wi-Fi and iPad control, but it is a complex rack unit rather than a simple personal accessory.
• Focal Clear Mg Professional: Delivers exceptional tonal balance and spatial precision using advanced magnesium drivers, yet its open-back design makes it unsuitable for noisy environments or outdoor use.
• Who picks the DL16S: Live engineers, touring crews, and venues needing a portable, wireless mixing solution that replaces bulky snake cables.
• Who picks the Focal: Audiophiles, mastering engineers, and musicians who require absolute sonic accuracy in a quiet, controlled environment.
The Gravity Mackie DL16S is not just a mixer; it is a complete digital workflow engine designed to liberate the sound engineer from the console. At its core sits a 16-channel digital rack mixer that integrates a 16-in/16-out USB 2.0 audio interface, allowing you to record full multitrack sessions directly to a computer while simultaneously mixing live. This capability transforms the device into a versatile tool for both performance and post-production, making it an ideal choice for bands that play live shows during the week and record demos on the weekends.
What truly sets this bundle apart is the wireless mixing capability. By leveraging built-in Wi-Fi networking, the system supports up to 20 iPads running the Master Fader control app simultaneously. This means you can place the physical mixer anywhere in the venue—even onstage—and walk around the audience area to fine-tune the mix from the perspective of the listener. You are no longer tethered to a specific spot behind the speakers. The inclusion of 16 recallable Onyx+ mic preamps ensures that the foundational sound quality remains professional-grade, delivering top-notch clarity regardless of how far you move from the source.
However, this level of power comes with a specific set of requirements. The DL16S is a corded electric device, meaning it needs a stable power source, and it relies heavily on your iOS ecosystem. If you are looking for something to wear on your head or carry in a pocket for casual listening, this is the wrong tool. It is a serious piece of gear for professionals who need to manage 8 fully assignable XLR outputs, 6 stereo-linkable aux sends, and 4 onboard FX processors without breaking a sweat. It fits the user who wants to leave the bulky snake cable at home and embrace a modern, flexible stage setup where every parameter, from faders to equalization, is instantly recallable and wirelessly accessible.

The Focal Clear Mg Professional represents the pinnacle of high-fidelity audio engineering for those who demand absolute transparency in their sound reproduction. These circum-aural, open-back headphones utilize a unique "M"-shaped magnesium dome driver paired with a frameless copper voice coil. This combination is engineered to push the boundaries of traditional audio, offering remarkable tonal balance across the entire spectrum from 5 Hz to 25,000 Hz. If your goal is to hear the subtle nuances of a recording—the breath of a vocalist, the decay of a cymbal, or the texture of a guitar string—these headphones deliver impact and dynamics that few competitors can match.
Comfort is equally critical when wearing professional monitors for hours on end. Focal has addressed this by designing a headband that creates a constant curve, ensuring the weight is distributed evenly across the whole head to prevent localized pressure points. The earcups feature perforated microfibre cushions that contribute to an extremely open design, enhancing the wide spatialisation that defines the product's soundstage. Whether you are mixing a track on a laptop, working with a mixing console, or connecting via a standard 6.5 mm jack, the included accessories cover all bases. You get two cables tailored for different setups and a rigid carrying case to protect your investment during transport.
This product is strictly for environments where silence is guaranteed. Because they are open-back, they offer zero isolation; what you hear is exactly what the room produces, and what you produce leaks out. They are not suitable for commuting, public spaces, or any scenario where background noise would interfere with your listening experience. The intended buyer is someone who has dedicated a space for critical listening, whether that be a home studio, a mastering suite, or a quiet office. It is for the person who values the purity of the musical creation over portability or noise cancellation, seeking a reference-quality tool that reveals every detail of the artist's work without coloration.

• Best for multi-user collaboration → The DL16S supports up to 20 simultaneous connections, perfect for teams where multiple engineers need access to the mix.
• Best for long-duration comfort in a quiet room → Focal's ergonomic headband and open design provide superior comfort for extended studio sessions.
• Best for recording and playback integration → The DL16S functions as a full 16-in/16-out USB interface, enabling virtual sound checks and direct multitrack recording.
• Best for precise instrument separation → The Focal magnesium drivers excel at bass articulation and high-frequency extension, essential for mixing complex arrangements.
• Best for live performance environments → The DL16S is built for the stage, handling XLR inputs and outputs with robust connectivity for real-world gigs.
• Best for home studio fidelity → Focal provides the open-back acoustic signature required for accurate mixing decisions before sending tracks to a client.
I would buy the Gravity Mackie DL16S if my primary focus was managing live sound events where flexibility and wireless control were non-negotiable. Its ability to turn a rack unit into a mobile command center changes the game for anyone performing or producing live audio. However, if I were sitting down to mix a track or enjoy music with uncompromising fidelity, I would immediately switch to the Focal Clear Mg Professional. The difference in sonic resolution provided by the magnesium drivers is simply too valuable to ignore for critical listening tasks. Ultimately, the DL16S is the better choice for the chaotic energy of a live show, while the Focal is the definitive tool for the stillness of a studio session. Neither device competes for the same role, but if forced to pick one for general versatility, the DL16S offers more functional utility across different scenarios.
Neither the Gravity Mackie DL16S nor the Focal Clear Mg Professional is designed for water activities. The DL16S is a heavy, corded rack mixer, and the Focal headphones are open-back with electronic components that cannot withstand moisture or submersion. You should look for specialized waterproof earbuds if you need audio gear for swimming.
While the Focal Clear Mg Professional has an impedance of 55 ohms, they generally pair well with standard audio interfaces, laptops, and mixing consoles thanks to the included 6.5 mm cables. However, because they are high-fidelity open-backs, driving them with a clean, powerful source will yield the best results compared to low-power phone jacks.
Yes, the DL16S can function as a standard mixer with physical controls and a headphone output, though you lose the wireless flexibility. To access the full suite of features like instant recall, wireless mixing, and iPad control, you will need the compatible software and a tablet device.
The Focal Clear Mg Professional is a wired-only device. It does not contain Bluetooth or internal batteries. It connects via the supplied cables to your audio source, ensuring a lossless connection which is preferred for professional audio work.
