The idea of the cartoon Granny began with the Little Red Riding Hood character in spoofs of the story, first appearing as such in the 1937 animated short Little Red Walking Hood which featured Egghead, directed by Tex Avery.[5] Subsequent appearances of a similar "granny" character included The Cagey Canary (1941), directed by Bob Clampett; Hiss and Make Up (1943), directed by Friz Freleng; and Hare Force (1944), featuring Bugs Bunny and Sylvester the dog (a one-off character distinct from the later Sylvester the cat). Finally, the character was solidified into her current role in Canary Row in 1950, with Bea Benaderet providing her voice. June Foray, who had been providing Granny's voice for her appearances on Capitol Records since 1950,[6] took over the role officially in 1955, and would perform the role for most of the rest of the character's theatrical run. Granny would continue to appear in several more animated shorts from the 1950s on, as a foil for Sylvester, who was always attempting to eat her pet bird Tweety.

Of course I would love to make an afghan with this square pattern, but I need more time and patience to take on that type of project right now ? If you are interested in making a blanket with these squares and want to alternate between the owl granny square and a basic granny square, you can follow a basic granny square pattern like THIS ONE and your squares will be the same size.

These are the cutest granny squares I've ever seen! I'm just learning how to crochet so I'm adding this to my list of projects to tackle when I'm ready ? I'd love for you to link up to my link party going on right now:

Just wanted to share the project I made with mine, though since I worked from the original guest post I hadn't spotted your suggested matching plain granny squares, so invented my own which didn't quite perfectly match in size. Still quite pleased with the results:

Thanks so much for a lovely owl-pattern. I have included the owl in a grannysquare-blanket I made for a little boy's first birthday. Today I have presented it in the blog I and my best friend write. I sure will try some of your other chrochetpatterns in the future!

Hey! Since I never heard back from you, I went ahead and started making the owlghan as I've affectionately begun calling it, and have gotten so far as to be working on the edging now. Here's a post on my blog on which you've been featured: -joining-comments-granny-pattern.html

Hi! Great pattern! It's so fun and different. I'm a new crocheter and I'm not the best at reading patterns. I suggest to anybody else new at crocheting who may be attempting this pattern to have the regular Granny Square mastered first. I tried to make the owl square before I learned the granny square and it kept coming out round. After I made the granny square and figured out how to math-it-out the owl square became square in my next attempt.

Thank you so much for this Owl Granny Square, I love it. I just made one and it's too cute, I think I'll make an afghan, pillow and who knows what else. Just a bit of advise for a beginner, practice a few granny squares before making your first one, I think this will help you. Thanks again!

Does Anyone happen to have a picture that they could post of the back of a finished owl granny square? I'm just wanting to see if the stitching to the embellishments is supposed to be visible or hidden. Thanks!

Hello, I would like to say "Thank you" for sharing your gorgeous owl pattern. This is exactly what I am looking for. It has been many years since I've crocheted an am Looking forward to being creative once again. My husband passed away just ten months ago, being along in a town we had recently retired to. I decided I surely needed to once again start a hobby I had truly loved. I have no doubt it will take a bit to recall all the stories. I have an adult daughter that loves owls an is crazy about them. I know when I finish and send this beautiful patterned owl in a large throw (that's what I'm hoping to make her) she will be over the moon.

Not crocheting in such a long time I am at a loss for how much yarn I should order. I do plan to create the throw output purples as purple is her favorite color. I plan to use the owl squares and the granny squares as I'm wanting to make this quite large. My problem, I'm at a loss for how much yarn I will need along with what purples. I am hoping you can help me with just what I will need. As I wrote I will be ordering on line. being handicapped I can't get to the stores myself. My wonderful husband who was a retired Veteran did my shopping. I'm sorry for such a long post but I honestly didn't know of anyone I could ask for advice with this. I have bookmarked this page so I can find the instructions again an would be extremely grateful for any reply's with some helpful advise. I also haven't purchased yarn in forever, or as it seems. O:) any advice as to the name brand of a yarn that is good quality but isn't all that costly would be nice to know.

I don't know if I am allowed to add my email address here for any reply's but I will list it and hope it will be okay.

Please excuse my long post, I hope you or someone will be so kind and help with the amount of total yarn for the throw along with the colors needed.

I thank you kindly for any and all in advance.

Warmest regards,

Addie. [email protected]

This is a beautiful afghan. I personally do not like doing granny square afghans because you have to make all the squares, then sew them together. This afghan makes it a lot simpler and fun to make. I am going to enjoy making this. Thank you for designing this patter.

I just love the title "great granny" quilt along. So sweet. :0) Your block is too cute and I am in love with your table topper. This looks like so much fun. And you know me ... I am a no waste kind of girl. Have a great week. Love Trish

I'm in...I have seen several granny sq quilts around...Now the Great granny...Off to buy fabric as I do not have a large scrap bag...You and Jodi are so full of great ideas....Don't have a blog..follow you and Jodi..You girls ROCK!!

woohoo! What fun! I've had granny blocks on my list of projects for a while and this is just the motivation I need to get started! Just joined the flickr group and looking forwrad to seeing the creativity!

Millie's Closet would make for awesome granny square blocks!

What the heck, I'll join in the madness, er, fun. I'm still working on my Sew Cherry granny square quilt, but another would be fun. I've got some PKM scraps that need a good home.

How could I not join? I love jelly rolls, granny squares AND I found out last week that I am going to be a Great Granny for the first time. I've joined the Flickr group and put your button on my blog. I'm ready to go!

I am totally joining the granny square along! I found this on Pinterest, followed over to your blog and now "sew" excited to start! :) Just joined the flickr group and am adding the button to my blog now. I am excited!

Lori i was on Pinterest and saw that you were having a quilt along. I can't believe that i almost missed it. You know i love everything that you do. Since i want to be just like you when I grow up I am joining in on the party. I think that your Milley fabric would be perfect for the retro granny square. I also like your version that is bigger. As always you are awesome!!!

I've been wanting to make granny squares even though I am not a granny ... I'll call them greataunt squares. Thanks for the chance to enter your giveaway and sew along too. I'm unsure as to what you mean by background fabric, but will re-read some. I'm waiting for flickr to finish the join and don't blog so no button. Dial-up is so slow!

i have been wanting to make a quilt like this for the last year. I absolutely love your idea of putting the granny squares up on a white background - it really shows off the blocks, while making the quilt look modern.

I am already working on a queensize granny square quilt so I won't be joining, but that doesn't mean I won't be looking at all the lucious quiltblocks that are going to be made. This is a wonderful, fun block, so if anyone hasn't made it before you really should. Uses up alot of little pieces of fabric. I'll post my quilt on my blog sometime when it gets finised.

Such a great tutorial and quilt along, Lori! I immediately signed up for the flickr group! Now I am really excited about following your lovely tute to make some great granny blocks!! Thank you so much Lori!

Hi,

Thanks for this bigger Granny tutorial. I'm reading it and am a bit confused about the match white up with the gray and cut part, but, I'm sure I will be able to do it!!! My mother made granny afghans for all of the kids and grand kids and just everyone. I loved helping her pick out the colors and where to put them. Thanks so much for this bigger pattern, more doable for me. hugs to you for all your work on this. I am going to "try" to join the flicker group...because I don't really know how to do that. Always something to learn!

Oh what fun! I've never figured out how to crochet granny squares so this is perfect for a fabric gal! I already joined the flicker group and I'm headed to dust off the sewing machine and get started!

I will be definitely be making some of these "granny blocks" and funny enough I am also teaching myself to crochet this summer and squeezing this into my "quilt time" too!! Thanks for the chance to win some beautiful fabrics!!

This pattern is free. In return I would love it if you tag me when sharing your project photos in social media, so I can see what you are creating from my pattern. Instagram: @hooked_by_anna #hepaticatop #hepaticagrannytop. Ravelry (link up your project page to my pattern). Download the pattern pdf in English (US crochet terms) below.

This free crochet pattern is part of my latest crochet tutorial which I released not that long ago. By making these granny squares you get to practice your crocheting and you get the satisfaction of making something you can use afterwards! Use it as a WIP (work in progress) bag, a shopping bag or just a general bag to store your left over yarn in. 17dc91bb1f
