On Grand Avenue, no space is exempt from being a site for public art. That includes a strip on Grand Avenue and McKinley Street, where a multicolored sidewalk is shaded by trees covered in afghans and puffballs hang from the branches. If that didn't spark your interest, there's also plenty of murals around Historic Grand Avenue, such as the large homage to Prince near 15th and Grand avenues.
You'll also find an array of artist studios and mom-and-pop shops along Grand, where workspaces and storefronts collide. Hunt down records at Grand Avenue Records, sip on coffee and view local artwork at Belhaus and find some new plant babies at the Instagram-friendly Pueblo.

Each November, a portion of this iconic roadway is blocked off to make way for the Grand Avenue Festival. Presented by Grand Avenue Arts & Preservation, this daylong event celebrates local artists as well as small businesses while promoting recycling, sustainability, local creativity and culture. Pop in anywhere from Seventh Avenue and West Van Buren Street to 15th Avenue and West Roosevelt Street, and expect tours of historic sights, fashion shows, live music and local art exhibits.
Of course, with all these artistic endeavors occurring along Grand, the area is a must-stop spot for the monthly First Friday Art Walk. Take a closer look at what to expect at this monthly event here.
You will find no shortage of worthwhile eateries along Historic Grand Avenue, who take up space in many of the old industrial buildings. Bacanora, in the old Bragg's Pie Factory space, features all the fixings of Sonoran-style Mexican food, where pollo asado, grilled octopus and just about everything else on the menu is made on the mesquite wood-fired grill. Just a few steps away is Testal Mexican Kitchen, where you can experience the flavors of Chihuahua, Mexico, (as well as shop trinkets imported from the region).
El Charro Hipster Bar & Cafe pairs Mexican-inspired bar bites, coffee and cocktails with live music, art displays and live art. The chapulines (crickets) qualify as both an appetizer and art. Alternatively, Earth Plant Based Cuisine is the Aguiler family's way of sharing their passion for and commitment to re-creating vegan versions of Mexican favorites. Trans AM Cafe is the perfect spot to grab a sandwich (including vegan offerings) and brows local art for sales, too.
Project Update (May 2024): 35% designs are available below. OakDOT will continue to collect input and make revisions in Summer 2024, and has issued a Request for Proposals for a consultant to expand community outreach, perform traffic studies, and create a Final Design.
Please see the link below to view the completed 35% concept plans for the Grand Avenue Project from Broadway to Mandana. These plans include protected bike lanes in either direction on Grand for the full project corridor, along with maintaining the existing 4 vehicle lanes and center turning lane on Grand. The City's path forward for this design is to solicit and hire an engineering consultant to perform Final Design and construction management. This process is expected to conclude in Summer 2024 at which point the City will restart the design and outreach process.
Due to the in-depth community conversation surrounding the design elements of the project, the potential to reduce the number of traffic lanes on Grand Avenue, and the multifaceted modal impacts of this project, the first phase of this Final Design work will be to conduct a full Road Diet Feasibility Study for Grand Avenue that fully investigates the impact of removing one lane of traffic in each direction on Grand Avenue (the 15% concept plan, linked below, removed one lane of westbound traffic from Euclid to Bay). Once this feasibility study is complete, the City will work with community stakeholders, residents, businesses, and AC Transit to select a preferred alternative to move forward to 100% design and construction.
Grand Avenue in this neighborhood also acts as a bypass or cut-through route for drivers avoiding traffic on I580, and is on the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian High Injury Network - the 6% of City streets that account for over 60% of severe and fatal collisions. How can OakDOT leverage this paving project to improve safety and access for people walking, biking, and taking the bus?
This planning and design process will be informed by the outcomes of the Grand Avenue Mobility Plan, which for the last two years has worked with the community in West Oakland, Downtown, and Adams Point to develop a long-term vision for the corridor. While this repaving project will likely not be able to fully implement the long-term vision of the Grand Avenue Mobility Plan, this coordination opportunity provides an important and timely opportunity to implement roadway safety improvements on Grand Avenue. These improvements could include:

Grand Avenue Library houses a collection of lesser used but important materials in a variety of formats, as well as older editions that have been retained for research purposes. Currently holding more than 1.5 million volumes in its 81,000 square feet, the library reflects USC Libraries' commitment to retaining and preserving the continuously growing print collection. Grand Avenue Library offers electronic paging of its holdings through the online Libraries Catalog. Paged materials are delivered to Leavey Library's Circulation Desk, typically within one business day, and held for the requestor for 10 days. Patrons also have the option to pick up materials at the Architecture and Fine Arts Library.
All patrons with a valid USC library card may use the electronic paging service through the Libraries Catalog or, if necessary, may make an appointment to visit the facility by emailing grandlib@usc.edu. Appointments are available between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. The Grand Ave. Library is located on the second floor of the Carol Little Building (CAL), three blocks east of campus, at Jefferson Blvd. and Grand Ave. All visitors must have a picture I.D. to enter the building.

Another amenity for the owners is the exclusive use of Bedford Village Inn Facilities, including fitness, pool, and transportation to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. Grand Avenue is a major east-west street in the city of Chicago and nearby DuPage County, although it deviates somewhat from Chicago's grid system, as it is diagonal west of Western Avenue. The street runs from the Kingery Highway (also known as U.S. Route 20 and Illinois Route 83) in Elmhurst, east through the western suburbs, and then east-southeast into Chicago, through the Magnificent Mile shopping area, and continuing out to Navy Pier, where it ends.
