However I have found my oziexplorer wince version to be stable and an excellent program. And i mainly use my wince gps when traveling not my android tablet. I am looking at buying a 7" wince unit to move my programs to.
I would forget the delicate and touchy android phones for serious hiking. There are a number of rugged Garmin handhelds today with BirdsEye functionality (different to the limited and ineffective "Custom Maps") that can be setup with the Hema, Ozi or any other raster images converted to JNX. The images work well as is or can be selected to combine with your Topo ANZ vector data layering over the raster images as a background.

I have a few Garmin handhelds, and have made quite a few Custom Maps from raster jpgs using OkMap. OKmap doesn't convert geo referenced PDFs though, or at least I don't think it does. I've tried with VicMaps 1:30000 pdfs and have to create jpgs first and reference it myself. But it can convert oziexplorer files for Garmin to use with some mucking around.
