MEET THE ARTISTS
I have been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil. In third grade I had a teacher who taught us how to draw faces. I have been doing faces ever since. In 7th grade I got to take lessons from Dickson Reader (famous portrait painter during the 50-70’s. I have been very fortunate that my parents let me explore my art talents. I used my art to teach school. One year I taught Special Ed Emotional Disturbed kids and art was the center of our curriculum. I never wanted to be a professional artist. Art is for my soul and relaxation.
I’m a retired RN and enjoy retirement by painting for fun.
DEBBIE POPE
I have been working in mixed media art for over 50 years. This includes pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic paints, sewing crafts, pour painting, all kinds of paper works and calligraphy. I also enjoy creating 3-D paper cards for all occasions. I can not imagine life without the opportunity of making art work.
I began painting 50 years ago. I started tole painting while living in Austin. I tried several medium and found I like watercolor best. I have had classes with some of America’s best know water color instructors including tom Lynch, Judy Betts, and my favorite the late Leo Smith. I have had wonderful experiences at the Clout Croft Art School and the Hill Country Art Foundation. My art work is on the state of Texas Heirloom Birth Certificate and Marriage License. I won Blue Ribbons “Best of Show” in both Brazos Valley Art League and Temple Barclays Art contest. I paint most every day. I’m so thankful to have this art experience as a big part of my life.
An interesting life leads to interesting paintings as viewers of Pamela Kanaby's dramatic works of art can testify. Although drawing and painting since childhood, it was living on a sailboat and traveling around the world for fifteen years that exposed Kanaby to a myriad of international artwork. She and her husband made it a point to visit museums and local artisan shops in every port they put into. entranced by what she saw, Kanaby kept a visual journal of her experiences with watercolor sketches.
In 2020, Kanaby and her family, including two daughters by then, desired a "normal life" back in the states as Kanaby puts it. Settling in San Diego, Kanaby had her first actual studio where she began composing her stunning abstract paintings in watercolor and acrylic.
"I love to create and do what I do."
Mr. Waite is a retired local educator who returned to art around 1980. He was an art major at Buffalo State College before joining the U.S. Army i 1968. A graduate of the University of Maryland ('75) and Niagara University ('82) he taught political science and history at Central Texas College for 25 years, retiring in 2013.
The four works displayed capture diverse landscapes visited by the artist over a period of several years, from the Grand Canyon in the southwest to rivers and lakes of New York. The impressionistic brush strokes impart movement and vibrancy, often juxtaposed by the solidity of rocks and man-made objects. All four were completed in 2025jat the Bell Fine Arts studio from photographs taken by the artist.
I worked as a legal secretary and then Court Administrator. In my career I worked with many fine judges, secretaries and court staff. Throughout school the class I always got an “A” was Art. While working full time and raising a family I studied painting and design at Mendocino College in the 70s, and 80s and 90s. Over the years I have entered many art competitions and won many awards and ribbons and financial rewards. One of my larger paintings of my older brother was in the State Fair in California. At times I have taken on commissions and enjoyed those challenges. When we lived in horse country, I did many commission “horse portraits: for different customers and still have a large number I painted for myself. I mostly worked in oils until I took a watercolor class. My husband and I traveled the United States for several years working in RV Parks. I enjoyed painting along the way and have a collection of barns paintings from different states. Presently I teach watercolor on Mondays to a wonderful group of artists. I have my home studio where I enjoy doing primarily watercolor greeting cards and small paintings. I have just now set up an oil painting studio as I feel a need to do some oil portrait painting.
There is much joy to be found in looking at the beauty of the world we are in. It is filled with complexity and simplicity at the same time. Creating art which reflects these qualities helps in appreciating our own place in the world. If you have contemplated this while looking at some of my pieces, my goal as an artist has been achieved.
Sheryl found her interest in art while in grade school. She studied advanced art media in oils, acrylics, charcoal, pastels, and ceramics at Houston Baptist University and the University of North Texas. She is certified in the Donna Dewberry One Stroke Painting technique. In recent years she has focused on watercolor painting of flowers, landscapes, and abstract pieces.
Karen is a 4th generation Texan. Her husband, David, encouraged her to paint after retiring from teaching. She enjoys the creativity and support of the BFA Community.
I’ve been painting for 40 years on and off. Had a career change late in life and became a Registered Nurse. I love being retired now which gives me more time to paint. I have dabbled in pastsels and acrylics and found I enjoy Oils as my medium. Please enjoy a few of my recent paintings as much as I enjoyed painting them.
