Privacy Policy for GPS Tripmeter

GPS Tripmeter is developed and published by Gertjan Lobbens.

This Privacy Policy explains how GPS Tripmeter accesses, uses and stores information when you use the application.

1. Summary

GPS Tripmeter is designed with privacy in mind.

The application:

• does not require a user account;

• does not contain advertisements;

• does not use analytics or tracking services;

• does not use crash-reporting services;

• does not sell personal information;

• does not send recorded trips or GPS history to the developer;

• does not store user information on servers operated by the developer.

Trip and location information is processed primarily on the user’s device.

2. Location information

GPS Tripmeter requires access to the device’s location to provide its core functions, including:

• measuring current speed;

• calculating travelled distance;

• recording a trip;

• displaying the current position on a map;

• calculating trip statistics;

• creating GPX files.

Depending on the permission granted by the user, the application may use precise or approximate location information.

Location access is only used to provide the trip-meter and mapping functionality requested by the user. It is not used for advertising, profiling or analytics.

GPS Tripmeter may continue processing location information while an active trip is running and the application is not visible on screen. In this situation, Android displays a foreground-service notification.

The user can revoke location permission at any time through the Android device settings. Revoking location access prevents GPS-based trip measurement from functioning correctly.

Android treats location as sensitive information and requires applications to request the appropriate permission from the user.

3. Trip data

GPS Tripmeter may store trip information locally on the device, including:

• trip name;

• travelled distance;

• route coordinates;

• start and end time;

• elapsed and moving time;

• average speed;

• maximum speed;

• imported or exported GPX information.

This information is used only to provide the app’s trip-recording, trip-history and GPX functions.

The developer does not receive or have access to this locally stored trip information.

Users can delete saved trips and reset trip counters from within the application.

4. GPX import and export

GPS Tripmeter allows users to import and export GPX files.

Files are only accessed after the user chooses a file or storage location using the Android file picker. Exported GPX files are saved to a location selected by the user.

The developer does not automatically receive copies of imported or exported GPX files.

Users are responsible for sharing, storing and protecting GPX files after they have been exported from the application.

5. Maps and internet access

GPS Tripmeter uses an internet connection to retrieve map content.

When map content is requested, the map or tile provider may receive standard technical connection information, such as:

• the device’s IP address;

• the requested map tile or map area;

• the date and time of the request;

• basic network and device information normally included in an internet request.

This information is processed by the relevant map provider according to that provider’s own privacy practices.

GPS Tripmeter does not intentionally send saved trip history, trip names or complete recorded GPX routes to the developer when displaying the map.

6. Notifications

GPS Tripmeter may request permission to display notifications.

Notifications are used to indicate that an active trip is being recorded and that the location foreground service is running. They are not used for advertising or marketing.

Notification permission can be changed through the Android device settings.

7. Home-screen widget

GPS Tripmeter includes an optional home-screen widget.

The widget may display locally stored trip and speed information. This information remains on the device and is not sent to the developer.

Users can remove the widget from the home screen at any time.

8. Data collection and sharing

GPS Tripmeter does not intentionally collect or share personal data with the developer.

In particular, GPS Tripmeter does not use:

• Firebase Analytics;

• Google Analytics;

• Firebase Crashlytics;

• advertising SDKs;

• behavioural tracking SDKs;

• developer-operated cloud storage;

• developer-operated user accounts.

Information that remains entirely on the user’s device is not transmitted to the developer.

Google Play’s Data safety guidance states that data processed only locally and not sent off the device is not considered collected for the Data safety declaration.

9. Device backups

Android may include application data in a device or Google account backup, depending on the device manufacturer, Android version and the user’s backup settings.

Such backups are controlled by Android and the user’s Google account settings, not by the developer of GPS Tripmeter.

Users can manage device backup options through their Android or Google account settings.

10. Data security

GPS Tripmeter is designed to minimise the amount of data processed and to keep trip information on the user’s device.

However, no device, storage system or internet transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users should protect access to their device and take care when sharing exported GPX files.

11. Data retention and deletion

Locally stored trip information remains on the device until the user:

• deletes an individual saved trip;

• resets the relevant trip information;

• clears the application’s storage;

• uninstalls the application.

The developer cannot remotely view or delete locally stored information because the information is not stored on developer-operated servers.

Exported GPX files must be deleted separately by the user from the location where they were saved.

12. Children’s privacy

GPS Tripmeter is not specifically directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

The application does not contain advertising, social networking, messaging or user-generated public content.

13. Third-party services

GPS Tripmeter may rely on services provided by the Android operating system and third-party map providers.

Those services may process limited technical information necessary to provide their functionality. Their handling of information is governed by their own privacy policies and terms.

14. Changes to this Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when the application’s functionality or legal requirements change.

Any updated version will be published on this page. The effective date at the top of the policy will be changed accordingly.
