This website seeks to aggregate information on the Green Party for the purpose of comparing it with what happens in the Labour Party and Your Party. The aim is to explore the spread of over half a million people in Labour in 2015-2021, who may now  be in 265,000 member Labour, 220,000 (or is it 228,000) member Greens and 42,000 member Your Party.

This website is thus connected for comparison purposes to Labour Dashboard and YP Aggregator to explore these comparative issues. The aim is to explore the Parties together as institutions.

As well as the "current news" section on this page (covering their conference below), on other pages it covers Party Structures and also has a page to act as an Archive of useful links and to explore Narratives.

The rise of the Greens from  a party that had less than 14,000 members 12 years ago and only been once over 60,000 before 2025 to 220,000-228,000 today is the development of a large new institution so it seems important to understand such a large organisation more and the Structures Page goes into great detail over that. 

It's interested to explore whether things that were were important to Labour members in political rows during 2015-19 are still as important to people now? Is what was advocated then a principle or was it merely a tactic in a conflict at the time? There may be more of these than some realise. 

It's underlying assumption is those members shown in different parties above are quite possibly now far more "comfortable" in the Party they are now in rather than being in conflict in one single party they may have been in the past. In the Greens a very clear 85% Leader result (after Labour's much less decisive 62% in 2016) may have been a "signal" for many to sign up after past experiences and that hypothesis is explored on the Structures section of this website.

Also as I set out here how much do expressive v instrumentalist (my own version being "party as a platform" to express v "party as a gateway" to be inducted into, that I somewhat presciently defined in Feb 2015 during the previous "Green Surge" of membership in 2014/15) makes a difference to how people are motivated to see and do politics? This shows my interest in these comparative party issues goes back a decade and is not new. The issue was further explored as early as late 2015 by Peter Kellner and used very organisationally effectively, rightly or wrongly, as segementation to help Keir Starmer to win selection and I cover the detail of that from a Labour context on Labour Dashboard. In the last decade social media driven low institutionalised Hyperpolitics has seen those segments above together mix more within political party contexts and arguably break into conflict. Alan Lockey has set out some very useful points as to a failing of Starmerism is it did not continue the segmentation in government but more importantly that it is not going away. In many ways the fluctuations of Green membership since 2013 from 14,000 up to 63,000 ,down to 39,000, back up to50,000 and then 68,000 and now up to 220,000-228,000 is an incredibly useful trend metric indeed - see the 50+ years membership data on the Structures page - for the level of that platform/expressiveness and how well networked or even semi-institutionalised it gets?

The size of the Green membership means one can now explore all these issues institutionally with them too now. It should be made very clear that politics is naturally a mix of equally valid instrumentalist & expressive motivations (eg even the Labour Party recognises this with "Clause 1" AND "Clause IV" of its rules) but how well do political parties as structured institutions, historically operating more by gateway instrumentalism, work with this mix when social movements tend to be where a concentration on expressive platform politics has worked more easily?  What happens if the "comfortability" hypothesis above suggests we now have a large party institution of over 200,000 made up of a much higher proportion of "ethically certain" "expressive" activists  who in Kellner's original 2015 argument do not "motivationally need to "win" a general election and expressively "winning the argument" is equally important too them rather than perhaps a more secondary outcome for "what counts is what works/wins" instrumentalists? What are the implications for a party with those possible characterisitics and also for politics more widely? 

This should not be seen as an issue of interest to just the Labour right (who have made use of the segmentation), centrists and soft left but is also being explored more by further Left commentators too here and here. On top of that left commentators have also flagged the issue of "virtue hoarding" where "ethical certainty" (a phrase I first used in Sept 2014 during the Green Member surge then just before Oliver Burkeman in Jan 2015 more widely flagged individualistic righteous problem solving) comes into conflict with other post-materialists who may hold more "ethical complexity" mindsets with its trade offs/Trolley Problems.

If I have any suggestion to political parties in general after watching Labour across its new narrative of a "2015-2026 Two antithesis Leaders period" and now looking at the Greens, is that political parties, whether more for the intrumentalist or the expressive, are pretty rubbish at "inducting" large numbers of new members in general into them as institutions. An examination of the Green Party training offer seems to focus more on experienced electoral campaigners than new members so the Greens may be going through the same issues Labour went through over member assimilation into party culture. This low institutionalisation is something that is becoming a more widely recognised issue for left commentators. To show what might be practically needed for any "induction" this website aims to explain the Greens as an institution through data and perhaps in places set out questions for self-reflection that even the most "ethically certain" might want to explore?

Green Party Autumn Conference  2-4 October, Brighton

• Attendance: Claiming 3000+ but just over 1,800 voted in the main Greens for Palestine debate (and over 400 of the votes were cast online) so perhaps closer to 2,000? Was until last year 1,000 to 1,500 members but is significantly expanding. Most attending will be members with a right to vote as the Conference is non-delegate.

• Comparison Events in terms of Total Attendance: Labour 18,000, Conservatives 12,000, Reform 8,000, Liberal Democrats 3,500, Your Party 2,500, TUC 3,000 . Important to note these numbers includes a lot of visitors as well as voting delegates.
