Workplace Bullying

If we're lucky enough, the last bully I saw was in the schoolyard. I have not been so fortunate. As a human resources professional I've witnessed many workplace bullies go to my site. They are aggressive and use it to get their way. I've seen bullies yell at others and try to intimidate them.

It doesn't always work and, if it does, it won't last long. I recall one executive being known for his habit of pounding his fist at the top and shouting at the top. He was referring to what were called wire-brush meetings. These meetings were used to "scrub” projects and initiatives that weren’t performing well. Instead of encouraging, teaching, and creating an environment that would allow project and vendor manager to learn and grow, he created fear. His toxic behavior spread to other executives reporting to him. The initial storm was a temporary phenomenon that became an established part of the workplace environment. The involved executives rationalized the bullying.

They thought, "It works!" Project performance has never looked better. But, it was only temporary. Project and vendor managers began to conceal errors and keep confidential information. Turnover rose and employee morale declined. This affected project performance as well relationships with suppliers and vendors. Bullying short-term had a negative impact on financial performance as well as customer satisfaction. The worst offenders were encouraged to leave the firm when it was over. It took time to create an environment that was more positive and productive.
