**********
Momotaro was born in Ueno Zoo in Tokyo.
As you know, his mother is Momoko, who is also Sumomo's mother.
Momotaro is Momoko's first child.
Momotaro's father is Biju.
Momotaro is the only child born to Biju and Momoko.
Biju died at the age of 12.
Momotaro was born after Biju died, so Momotaro has never seen his father.
At that time, many gorillas were gathered at the Ueno Zoo from all over Japan.
Genki was one of them.
At first, Biju's partners were Genki and other female gorillas.
Momoko became a member later.
Momoko and Momotaro spent time together as mother and child after Biju's death.
In other words, Momotaro has never spent time with other gorillas.
I have heard that he lived with a female gorilla named Laura for a short period of time.
Momoko and Momotaro moved from Ueno to Chiba and back to Ueno again.
When they returned to Ueno, Momoko was living with a male gorilla and Momotaro was alone.
Then came the fateful day.
The day came for Momotaro to leave for the Kyoto City Zoo.

Supplementary information;
★Momotaro hates soil.
Reason: Because he had lived only on concrete, he is not accustomed to soil. Therefore, he hates dirt very much.
★Momotaro is very attached to food.
Reason: Because he has not spent time with gorillas other than his mother, he has not had the experience of competing for food. He gets as much as he wants. This is probably due to the fact that he grew up in such an environment.
★Momotaro does not like helmets.
Reason: When he was moved from the Ueno Zoo to the Kyoto Zoo, it was a worker wearing a helmet who did the work.
At that time, Momotaro must have been so anxious that he was so traumatized by the experience that he even breaks down when he sees people wearing helmets. (Diarrhea, etc.)
★Momotaro rarely does any drumming.
Reason: This is probably due to his personality and the environment in which he was raised. Even his keepers only hear Momotaro drumming about 10 times a year.
It is also said that Momotaro's drumming is most common when Gentaro is drumming.
**********
★Is Momotaro not good with female gorillas?
My view: simply because he has no experience living with other gorillas. If it's not that he's not good at it, but rather inexperienced, then anyone would be.
However, now that he lives with Genki and he has two sons, I don't think he is bad with female gorillas.
In some cases, male gorillas that cannot adapt to gorilla society cannot even mate with female gorillas. Such gorillas do not even want to be with female gorillas.
Momotaro is not like that.

No,2 Today, Genki.
I talked about Momotaro last time.
I will talk about Gentaro and Kintaro next time.
**********
Genki was born in Kyoto City Zoo.
His father is Mak and his mother is Hiromi.
Hiromi is from Africa, so she was able to build a nest. However, Genki cannot.
When Genki was young, she was a very naughty girl.
Hiromi also had a hard time taking care of Genki.
As you know, Genki was moved to Ueno, Tokyo for a breeding project.
There, Genki met a male gorilla named Biju.
Biju's name was mentioned in Momotaro's last lecture.
Biju was very compatible with Genki.
Until Momoko came into the herd.
Biju fell in love with young Momoko and stopped taking Genki so well.
So, Genki was heartbroken.
Along with that shock, Genki was not compatible with the other female gorillas.
Gradually, Genki became emotionally ill and eventually began to self-mutilate.
This continued even after returning to the Kyoto Zoo from the Ueno Zoo.
The reason for returning to the Kyoto Zoo was that Genki had lost half of his body weight and was in danger.
Because of this, Genki is missing several toes on his hands and feet.
After returning to the Kyoto Zoo, Genki was mentally unstable for a while.
However, as is not usually the case, the zoo allowed Genki to live with his mother, Hiromi, which calmed her mental state and helped her regain almost all of her original weight.
Finally, the day of destiny arrives.
It is the meeting with Momotaro.
In fact, even before Genki met Momotaro, the Kyoto City Zoo had been showing him images of Momotaro.
After Genki and Momotaro first met, it did not take long for them to fall in love.
Momotaro resembles Biju, a male gorilla with whom she once had a great love affair.
Genki must have been surprised.
Genki now has two sons, Gentaro and Kintaro, but before he met Momotaro, he had been partners with other gorillas. However, she never became pregnant.
It was said that Genki, a female gorilla, would be the best partner for Momotaro, who was worried about whether he would be able to adapt well to gorilla society, because of her extensive experience in gorilla society and in breeding behavior with male gorillas.
In fact, it is true.
Momotaro learned from Genki how things should be in gorilla society.
Unlike other female gorillas, Genki does not get bloodthirsty and angry with male gorillas. She is a very patient female gorilla.
Even when Momotaro makes mistakes, she has been considerate of him and has looked out for him.
Supplementary information;
★Why does Genki have such a big appetite?
Reason: According to her keepers, Genki loves to eat. That is probably the first and foremost reason.
The other reason, in my personal opinion, is that she has cavities and cannot digest food well.
In fact, her feces are long in shape. Grass and pasture often come out undigested.
She needs to eat a lot to replenish her nutritional needs.
★Can Genki have another baby?
Guess: It would be a prerequisite that Kintaro's lactation is completely finished first.
While she is nursing her child, the female gorilla will not be in heat, nor will she menstruate.
Then, no matter how much the male gorilla wants to mate, the female gorilla will not be receptive.
Kintaro still sometimes nips Genki's nipples. I am not sure if he is drinking milk or not, but such behavior is surely making it harder for Genki to go into heat if he is still doing so.
Female gorillas need to live at least 5 years to raise their young.
Otherwise, a surrogate mother is needed.
If the mother dies within 5 years and no surrogate mother can be found, the baby gorilla is said to die prematurely.
Right now, there is no system in Japan to ask for a surrogate mother, is there?
Then Genki would need to live until at least 43 years old, assuming she conceives next year and gives birth the year after.
The average lifespan of a gorilla in the wild is 30 years.
In captivity, 40 to 50 years.
I personally believe that the key to Genki's physical condition is whether she will be able to raise a child until he is 43 years old.
Because if she does, Genki will have an older childbirth and her bones will be weaker and more prone to fractures. This is the same for humans when they give birth at an older age. So the risk is high.
★I feel sorry for Genki being messed around with by Gentaro! Can't something be done about it?
My personal view: it is normal for children to mess with their parents. In gorilla society, children need to be able to beat their parents to become independent.
They need to be able to beat not only their mother Genki, but also their father Momotaro.
Only by demonstrating such behavior can they become respectable male gorillas.
Nevertheless, under captivity, a child cannot leave his family of his own volition.
In Gentaro's case, it is a challenge to know when to talk to his family.
I personally believe that he will not be separated from his family right now, as he is not attacking Momotaro in any major way at this time.

**********************
Gentaro was born in Kyoto City Zoo.
His father Momotaro was born in Ueno Zoo.
His mother, Genki, was born in Kyoto City Zoo.
Gentaro was the first child born between two gorillas born in Japan.
Gentaro was taken care of by Genki as soon as he was born, but a few days later, the zookeeper noticed that Gentaro had lost his energy.
Apparently, Gentaro was not getting enough milk from his mother.
The keeper decided that Gentaro's life was in danger, so he had no choice but to separate Gentaro from Genki and artificially feed him.
Gentaro spent the next 10 months with his keeper.
However, the keeper did show Gentaro to Genki.
They showed Gentaro to Genki specifically so that Gentaro could return to his family.
The time had come.
Genki and Gentaro can finally live together.
At first, Genki did not know how to touch Gentaro.
Gentaro also did not know how to treat Genki.
Although they were mother and child, they were sometimes separated at night at first.
However, there was no need to worry.
Genki immediately began to take care of Gentaro.
It is said that Gentaro is not recognized as Genki's own child.
In other words, Genki took on the role of Gentaro's surrogate mother.
Eleven years passed in the blink of an eye.
Recently, Gentaro has been having a hard time messing with Genki, but knowing the past history, we can assume that Gentaro still has a desire for Genki to take care of him.
Human babies can be separated from their mothers after birth, but gorillas are always with them 24 hours a day for the first year of their lives.
Gentaro could not have that experience.
Supplementary information;
★Does Gentaro have no canine teeth?
What I heard. Gentaro does have canine teeth. I have heard that they are just small.
★When will Gentaro become a silverback?
Guess: It's hard to say, since there are individual differences, but generally speaking, male gorillas become silverbacks when they are as young as 13 years old.
Momotaro was a silverback by age 11, but that was an exception.
Momotaro instinctively had to become a silverback himself because there were no male gorillas around! It is said that Momotaro's body must have reacted to the fact that there were no male gorillas around. When that happens, they say, hormones change rapidly.
If Gentaro spends more time with his family, the time when he becomes a silverback will be later. This is because of the hormonal relationship I mentioned earlier.
★When will Gentaro leave his family?
My personal guess: I don't know. The Kyoto City Zoo is hoping to let him stay with his family for as long as possible.
We also do not know if Annie from the Higashiyama Zoo will be his partner.
This is because there are discussions among the zoos.
Kyoto City Zoo cannot decide alone.
In Japan, there is no association or organization that unites zoos. All negotiations are between zoos.
Also, the owner of Gentaro is the Chiba Zoo, so the Chiba Zoo's intentions will be greatly reflected. Kyoto City Zoo is not the owner of Gentaro.
Also, this is a personal thought,
Annie at the Higashiyama Zoo was raised by artificial nursing. In other words, she has no experience of being raised by gorillas for the important 10 months of her life. This may affect her when she lives with other male gorilla and becomes a mother.
Given this, I am concerned about whether things will go well with Gentaro.

No,4 Today, Kintaro.
I talked about Momotaro, Genki and Gentaro last time.
**********************
Kintaro was born in Kyoto City Zoo.
It is 7 years after Gentaro was born.
Kintaro has been raised by his mother, Genki, from birth until now.
However, Genki's milk was a little low, and the zookeepers had been feeding Kintaro with supplemental food for more than a year.
Now they are not giving him anything.
Kintaro has observed how Gentaro has interacted with his parents, so he can be very well behaved.
At the same time, he is strong-willed and cares little if Momotaro is angry with him.
I am worried that when Kintaro becomes the same age as Gentaro is now, he will mess with Genki more.
Supplementary information;
★When will Kintaro's front teeth grow in?
What I heard. Gentaro's permanent teeth came in around the age of 6. That means Kintaro's front teeth are likely to come in around that time, so two years from now.
★I am afraid that Kintaro is going to fall from a height, is he going to be okay?
Answer: It will be fine. He is a gorilla. The western gorilla lives at a much higher altitude.
Also, even if he were to fall from 4 or 5 meters, Kintaro would not be injured. Gorillas have sturdy bodies.
I have seen Kintaro fall from a height of 4 meters, and he was unharmed and looked unaffected.
When playing with Gentaro, Kintaro has fallen and so on, but it is no problem at all. Not only Kintaro, but the whole family is not worried at all. Because for the gorillas, it is that fine.
