On the strength of a 41-9 third quarter , the Warriors claimed the first regular season win in Chase Center, downing the Suns 109-71 Wednesday night. The run, capitalized by ferocious defense and lights out shooting, balooned a nine-point halftime lead into a insurmountable 39-point lead entering the fourth.
Stephen Curry paced the Warrior offense, connecting on five of his nine three point attempts, finishing with a season-high 27 points to go along with four rebounds and seven assists. While Curry paced the offensive scoring attack, his backcourt partner provided an equal punch. D'Angelo Russell broke out of his early season slump, posting his first double-double of the season with 20 points, five rebounds and 12 assists.
Making his second consecutive start, Jordan Poole scored 15 points to go along with seven rebounds.
The Warriors and Suns traded buckets early on in the first before Golden State built up a seven-point lead entering the second. Immediately, the Warriors threatened to pull away, building a 14-point advantage on the back of threes from Curry, Russell and Poole. The Suns rallied back, going on a 7-0 run late in the half, cutting the lead to 46-41 with 13 seconds to play.
On the ensuing possession, Poole got free for a midrange jumper, hitting the shot as the buzzer sounded, pushing the lead back to 48-41.
In the dominant third, the Warriors offensive prowess shown through. The team combined to hit five of seven from deep, and 67% of their shots in the frame, all while holding the Suns to 1-for-12 from deep (8%) and just four made buckets in the entire quarter.
Willie Cauley-Stein made his first appearance as a Warrior, providing 11 points and five rebounds off the bench while shooting 5-for-6. Alec Burks also made his Warriors debut with seven points, three assists and a rebound.
With the win, the Warriors improved to 2-2 on the season and will host the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night at Chase Center.
