While the Warriors have rolled to victory after victory during their redemption campaign, it hasn’t been so much the amount of victories that they’ve tallied, but rather the win margins. Owning the best win margin at 15.3 points, including an NBA record 73-point win over the Memphis Grizzlies, the Warriors have made a point that their dynasty is far from over.
They made that point again on Saturday night, scoring 76 second half points enroute to a 141-81 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, the eighth-largest win margin in NBA history.
Stephen Curry led the Warrior attack, scoring 36 points with eight rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two boards in just 30 minutes, including going 8-for-12 from beyond the three-point arc putting him just three three-point field goals beyond James Harden for second most in an NBA season. Jaylen Brown had another explosive night, scoring 29 points with six rebounds, four assists and two blocks in just 25 minutes.
Despite those big performances, perhaps the most inspiring came from Vince Edwards and Daniel Gafford. Edwards, who is currently on a two-way contract, racked up a career-high points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting off the bench. Meanwhile, Gafford, who has been fighting for minutes alongside NBA veterans, took advantage of his 14 minutes. The rookie registered his first career double-double, scoring 11 points to go with a team-high 14 rebounds.
For much of the first half, the Thunder were in control, shooting exceptionally well from deep and keeping the Warriors at arm’s length. The Thunder were able to build the lead to as many as five in the second quarter after a Chris Paul triple. But suddenly, an offense that was once red hot, went ice cold.
The Warrior defense locked down, holding the Thunder to just two points over the quarter’s final five minutes, while going on a 16-2 run to flip a four-point deficit into a 10-point halftime lead. Curry bottomed a pair of triples to spark the run that saw the Thunder go scoreless until a Dennis Schroder layup with 1:12 to play in the half broke a four-minute scoreless streak.
The halftime break did little to slow the Warrior attack, or re-ignite the Thunder’s, as Golden State allowed just one Oklahoma City basket over the quarter’s first six minutes. The lone basket would serve to effectively end the game, as the Warriors went on 20-2 run, led by 13 points from Jaylen Brown.
While the first half saw the Warriors shoot 64 percent from deep (10-for-16), they attempted just three three-point field goals in the third quarter. Instead, they looked inside and on the break for their offense, scoring 19 points in the paint and 24 on the fast break, while holding the Thunder to zero and three points, respectively.
Golden State wraps up the second night of a back-to-back on Sunday as they host the San Antonio Spurs for the third time. The Warriors have taken the first two meetings against the Spurs, who they will see a fourth time on April 3 in San Antonio.
