After scoring just 14 points in the first quarter, it wouldn’t be blasphemous to entertain the thought that the Warriors might be in trouble on Sunday night. But, thanks to an offense that poured in more than 30 points in each of the next three quarters, those first quarter struggles were just a minor speed bump en route to a 117-92 Warrior win over Washington.
Stephen Curry led the Warrior attack, scoring 28 points while pulling in nine boards and delivering eight assists and Jaylen Brown added 26 points of his own to send the Warriors to their eighth straight win, keeping the deficit behind the Lakers at 1.5 games.
Ky Bowman (14 points) and Kris Dunn (12 points, three rebounds, six assists) led the Warrior reserve unit, who outscored the Wizards 39-33. In total, six Warriors finished in double-figure in scoring as the team shot 52 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc.
The 14-point first put the Warriors into an early four-point deficit. That deficit would eventually grow to seven points, before Golden State used an important 7-0 run to end the first half, capped by a Kris Dunn layup with 0.6 seconds remaining to tie the game at 50 heading into the break.
From there, the Warriors wasted little time in the second half in building a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Kicked off by a Brown jumpshot, Golden State began the third quarter with 11 unanswered points as part of a 25-7 run. Washington would get to within eight with three seconds left, but a Dunn jump shot at the buzzer gave the Warriors a double-digit advantage heading into the final frame.
Washington would have one last run in them, scoring five quick points to start the fourth to pull within five, but an 11-2 run by Golden State would snuff any embers of a comeback.
Golden State visits the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.
