When the Warriors acquired Jaylen Brown on February 1, sending away All Star point guard D’Angelo Russell, questions marks were raised about who could carry the Warrior offense when Stephen Curry was on the bench.
Over his first eight games, Brown is answering that question with an emphasis.
Brown finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds nine assists, one assist shy from his second-straight double-double, and Curry added 42 points, three rebounds and four assists as the Warriors used a late defensive stand to down the Sacramento Kings 108-100 on Tuesday night.
The eight-point win didn’t come without dramatics. Late in the fourth, the Kings, propelled by consecutive triples from Buddy Hield and a Marvin Bagley III layup, built a four point advantage. Curry and Eric Paschall (six points, six rebounds, two steals) quickly answered, draining threes of their own to re-take the lead.
Bogdan Bogdanovic responded with yet another three, before Kris Dunn (18 points, three rebounds, two assists) escaped for a transition layup, drawing a foul and converting the and-one opportunity, returning the lead to the Warriors.
Curry converted a layup with 3:01 to play before defenses settled in. Stop, after stop, after stop kept the Warrior lead at just four points until, with 50 seconds to play, Harrison Barnes sunk a pair of free throws to cut the deficit in half.
As he had done throughout, Curry yet again answered. After getting loose off a back screen, Brown found a wide open Curry under the basket to push the lead back to four.
After Bogdanovic cut the deficit to two, Brown converted one of two free throw attempts with 11 seconds to play, leaving the door open for a potential game-tying opportunity.
Hield took a high screen from Bagley, only to be met by Draymond Green (four points, 10 rebounds, six assists) above the three-point line. Hield attempted to drive to the hoop, but with time dwindling was forced to put up a mid-range jumper, which bounced harmlessly off the rim, sealing the Golden State win.
Golden State hosts the Lakers for the final time this season on Thursday night. The Warriors are 0-2 against the Western Conference leader.
