With just more than a minute to play, it seemed certain that the Warriors seven-game winning streak would come to a disappointing end. Trailing the Portland Trail Blazers 134-128 with 1:08 to play, Golden State would need nothing short of a miracle to pull out an unlikely victory.
Then, like things seem to be going for a surprising Warrior team, the ball bounced their way. A Draymond Green layup followed by a Green jumper made it a two-point game with 26 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Curry stripped Lillard of the ball before racing ahead for a game-tying layup.
Lillard, however, would not be denied. Lillard took the ball up court, getting a screen that put Green on him. Then, as Paul George and many others before him have seen, Lillard broke out his signature step back, nailing a three-point field goal with just 2.7 seconds to play, giving Portland a 137-134 lead.
Curry would not be outshone, getting open on a high screen off the inbounds pass in the corner and nailing a second game-tying three to send it to overtime.
Despite the heroics, overtime would be no easy accomplishment. The Blazers built a four-point lead before D’Angelo Russell made a tough layup only for Curry to then make a layup of his own through contact, drawing a foul and converting the free throw to give the Dubs a one-point lead which would eventually grow to 10 in a 166-156 victory.
In a season in which Curry has continually marked his name in the record books, he did so once again. With 63 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists and eight three-point field goals, he joined James Harden as the only players to finish with 60+ points, five or more rebounds, 10+ assists and eight or more three-pointers.
Golden State returns to San Francisco on Wednesday to host the Utah Jazz.
