The Original Production
Stepping Stones opened November 6, 1923 at Broadway’s Globe Theatre, later renamed to The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The show had an out of town try-out at New Haven’s Sherbet Theatre, before heading to Broadway. Charles Dillingham produced the show after receiving a private performance from Dorothy Stone, saying to Fred Stone that “She is your next partner.” Allene Stone was at first hesitant and insisted upon playing Dorothy’s onstage mother (as well as being her real mother.) The book and lyrics were done by Fred Stone’s long time friend; Anne Caldwell, with music by Jerome Kern. It ran for 281 performances, closing on October 4, 1924. The show was closed as a result of an actor's strike, Fred Stone was very upset, sending an anti-union cablegram to producer Charles Dillingham. The show was moved to Boston’s Colonial Theatre on October 6th, 1924, which began a tour of the show. The show toured until 1926.
