Gold Masses in 2021-2  for Catholics in Science and Science Education.  



Most of the Gold Masses listed below were sponsored or co-sponsored by the Society of Catholic Scientists and its college chapters.  Most were supported in part by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

November 3, 2021:

Louisville (KY): Wednesday, Nov. 3, 6:00pm, in Holy Family Church (3938 Poplar Level Road, Louisville, KY 40213). The celebrant will be Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, former president of the USCCB. There will be a sandwich reception immediately following the Mass in the lower level of the adjacent Archdiocese of Louisville Pastoral Center.  At 7:30pm, Dr. Kate Bulinski will speak about what being a Catholic and a scientist means to her.  This will be followed by a panel discussion. University of Mary (ND):  Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel on the campus of the University of Mary, to be presided over by The Most Reverend David Kagan, Bishop of the Diocese of Bismarck, North Dakota.  There will be a reception with coffee and pastries following the Mass in the Harold Schafer Leadership Center, a neighboring building (11am  to noon).  Anyone who has questions can contact Travis Wolf at ttwolf@umary.edu.

November 11, 2021:

Birmingham (AL): Thursday, Nov. 11, 6:00pm, at St. Paul’s Cathedral (2120 3rd Avenue N, Birmingham, AL 35203). Bishop Steven J. Raica will be the celebrant. There will be a reception after the Mass.  For information contact pwiget@samford.edu

Cornell University (NY):  Sunday, Nov. 14, 10:30am, at Sage Chapel on Cornell University campus (Ho Plaza, Ithaca, NY  14853).  For information contact saj23@cornell.edu  

November 15, 2021:

Austin (TX): Monday, Nov 15, St. Mary’s Cathedral (203 East 10th Street, Austin, TX 78701). Very Rev. Daniel Liu, Rector of the Cathedral is the celebrant.  There is a reception and lecture after the Mass.  The lecturer is Prof. Robert Koons of the Philosophy Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

Benedictine University (IL):  Monday, Nov. 15, 5:00pm, in the St. Benedict Chapel on the 4th floor of Benedictine University’s Kindlon Hall. Fr. Falasiko Matovu will be the celebrant. Refreshments will be provided after Mass. A talk will follow at 6:00pm entitled “Wonder in Faith and Science.” The speaker is Dr. Chris Stoughton of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. All are welcome at this Mass and talk and no registration is necessary. Delaware: Monday, Nov. 15, 7:00pm, at St. Thomas More Oratory (45 Lovett Avenue, Newark, DE 19711).  The celebrant and homilist will be Msgr. Steven P. Hurley. There will be a reception following the mass in the hall of the Oratory. For information contact tmcintire@udcatholic.org  

Detroit (MI): Monday, Nov. 15, 7:00pm, in the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament (9844 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48202)  The Very Rev. J.J. Mech, rector of the cathedral will be the celebrant. Kraków (Poland): Monday, Nov. 15, 6:00 PM CEST there will be a Gold Mass (in Polish) in the Chapel of the Dominican Order Monastery. Following the Mass there will be at 7:00 PM CEST (1:00 PM US EST) there will be an online lecture (in English) "An Exceptional Universe: Thoughts from Physics for Theism." by Rev. Prof. Javier Sánchez-Cañizares.

Minneapolis-St. Paul (MN): Monday, Nov. 15, 7:00pm, at the Church of St. Mark (2001 Dayton Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104). The Mass will be presided over by Fr. Matthew Shiremen. It will be followed by a reception. For information contact Fr. Shireman at mshireman@seasparish.org 

New York City (NY): Monday, Nov. 15, 7:00pm, at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer (869 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10065). The Gold Mass will be celebrated according the Dominican Rite (the Dominican version of the old Latin Mass), and Fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P., will be the preacher. Seton Hall University (NJ): Monday, Nov 15, 12 Noon, in the University Chapel. The main celebrant will be Rev. Brian K. Muzás, Ph.D.  Lunch at 12:30pm in SC 108.  Please RSVP joseph.laracy@shu.edu 

Toruń (Poland): Monday, Nov. 15, 6:00 PM CEST there will be a Gold Mass (in Polish) in the Chapel of the Faculty of Theology, Nicolaus Copernicus University. Following the Mass there will be at 7:00 PM CEST (1:00 PM US EST) an online lecture (in English) "An Exceptional Universe: Thoughts from Physics for Theism." by Rev. Prof. Javier Sánchez-Cañizares (Zoom link to be announced here before the time of the talk).

University of Notre Dame (IN): Monday, Nov 15, 5:15pm, Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The celebrant and homilist will be Fr. Terrence Ehrman, C.S.C.  There will be a reception at 6:15pm (tentative time) in the Jordan Hall Galleria. After the reception, there will be a lecture in the Jordan Hall Auditorium (tentative time 7:15pm) by Prof. Phillip Sloan of Univ. of Notre Dame entitled "Technoscience and Human Transcendence: Interfacing Biotechnology and Catholic Faith." November 16, 2021:

Benedictine College, Kansas City area (KS): Tuesday, Nov. 16, 5:30pm in St. Benedict’s Abbey Church (1020 N 2nd Street, Atchison, KS 66002). The celebrant is Msgr. Stuart Swetland, president of Donnelly College. This is associated with a day-long program on faith and science for advanced high-school students called the “Young Catholic Leaders Initiative” sponsored by the Collegium Institute. The program has lectures, breakout seminars, film workshops and panel discussions with leading Catholic Scientists. Madison (WI): Thurs, April 28, 5:30pm at Holy Redeemer Church (128 West Johnson Street Madison, Wisconsin).  Immediately, after Mass there will be a dinner and lecture in the church dining hall (downstairs, next to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.  The lecture will be by Prof. Cory Hayes of St. Joseph Seminary College in Covington, LA, and will be entitled "Unity without Uniformity: The Scientific Vocation from a Theologian's Point of View".  More information can be found at http://scsmadisonwisconsin.org/
