August brings the sweltering heat and with it, Obon, a deeply significant holiday in Japan. During this time, it was traditionally believed that ancestors return to earth to check in on their descendants. To celebrate this sacred event, communities come together for festivals, make pilgrimages to temples, and visit their family graves.
Over a century ago, the merchants of Gojozaka began offering their porcelain wares to these pilgrims, laying the foundation for the renowned Pottery Festival, which grew to prominence in the mid 20th century.
Though temporarily suspended because of COVID-19, last year marked the return of Gojo Wakamiya Pottery Festival. With this year promising to be pre-pandemic size, we sincerely hope that everyone visiting Kyoto this August will join us in celebrating this honoured tradition.
