GHS Band Update — November 18, 2025
We are so proud of our students for an outstanding marching season! Thank you to families for your support and encouragement throughout the season.
The SCKMEA district band and orchestra rehearsals and concerts will be held at Maize High School on Friday, December 6.
Students must provide their own transportation.
All fees are covered by the school.
Students who were selected are:

Performance for Challenger Intermediate School - FRI, Sept 26
As a way to hype up music (in addition to performing our show before our first competition of the season), we are performing for the 5th and 6th graders at CHA this Friday. Students will stay in band after 1st hour, we'll bus over to CHA at 8:45am, perform around 9:15am, rehearse a tiny bit and touch it up, then return back to the school and get back in class around 10am. Like always,students need to communicate their absence with their teachers.
Air Capital
We are hosting the 4th annual Air Capital Marching Invitational on September 27th. Here is the schedule for the day. We will have a clinic (the band will work with clinicans to improve our show and give us guidance on what to do next) at 8:30AM. Students need to be in the band room at 8AM. Students will then sign-up to help out around the event. Goddard will perform at 2:30PM.

Hello,
Introduction
If we haven't meet, I’m Micah Bolton, Director of Bands at Goddard High School. This is my third year in the district, and I love making music with students from GHS, GMS, and Challenger while collaborating with our incredible music educators.
I studied percussion at Friends University with Andrew Slater, and before that with Kansas Music Hall of Fame member Dean Kranzler. Outside the classroom, I perform with the Wichita Wind Symphony, Stan Kenton Christmas Brass, Wichita State University Wind Ensemble, and in musicals and freelance gigs around the area.
My teaching philosophy centers on excellence, relationships, and pushing students beyond mediocrity. I believe in setting high standards while maintaining a healthy work-life balance—so after 3:30 PM, I’m spending time with my wife, family, and friends.
I’m excited for another great year of music-making in Goddard!

Rehearsal Excellence Points (REP): 25 pts/week
Assessments/Playing Tests: 25 pts each (via Google Classroom)
Public Performances:
Football/Basketball = 50 pts each
Concerts/Competitions = 100 pts each
Tardiness/Apparel issues = -10 pts each
Excused absence = make-up video

Use the link below to view the pep band lists. White band and Blue band will split the rest of the basketball games. Your student can earn extra credit by going to their unrequired games. Students must remain in the stands with the band for the entire game(s) for full points. Students will get third quarter of the full game off. You cannot switch bands unless you are siblings and I messed it up.

Concert Band Chair Auditions
Your student was given access to auditon materials for chair/ensemble placements for the upcoming semester. Aditions will take place on the first two days back from the break. Your student will be placed in the concert band (playing grade 2-4 rep) or the symphonic band (playing grade 3-5 rep). Both groups will play on all the concerts. Both groups will participate in State Large Group.
Upcoming Concerts
Please take the time to check your calendars and the upcoming band dates (and the band schedule that was sent out in the beginning of the year) and communcate conflicts ahead of time (in accordance with the band handbook). Last year we had lots of grades impacted by a lack of communication. Thanks!
KSHSAA Solo & Small Ensemble Festival
If your student is insterested in performing at Regional Solo & Ensemble Festival on 3/29, please fill out this form BY March 1st. Additional Rehearsal - October 18th
Due to not having rehearsal for three days in a row next week, we will be having an additional rehearsal on Friday the 18th from 1:15pm-2:45pm. If you cannot make it for a legitamate reason, please let us know as soon as possible. This extended rehearsal will allow us to put the final touches on our show for the season.

Chair Placement Audition
This is a required audition that is due on October 21st. Mr. Lovell will listen to the auditions with Mr. Richey and I to decide chair placements for the year. I've already had some responses! Hallelujah! This is an all or nothing assignment - complete the assignment on time! You literally have 20 days to do it. The following is what was posted on October 1st in the Google Classroom:

Final Monday Night Rehearsal!
We will have our final Monday Night Rehearsal this upcoming Monday, the 30th of September. Please make sure you are in attendance unless you have communicated a conflict ahead of time. We need to get the rest of our show on the feild.
Moving forward we are deciding as a band staff if we need more or less outside of school rehearsals. Traditionally at GHS, Monday Night Rehearsals were 2.5 hours long and every Monday throughout the marching season. We are trying to weigh the pros and cons of having them - we'll get back to you on our plan for next season ASAP.
ACT & Neewollah Marching Festival
I had a junior talk to me at the beginning of class today about the possibility of them taking the ACT that Goddard is hosting on the same day. Just a few things on this...
1) I had a few juniors ask me if they'd be able to take it on Oct 26 in August (this was more than the 8 week notice I require to make up full points). After explaining that every band has to participate in the grand parade (meaning we'd have to be there by 1PM) they decided that they would wait until the December date.
2) In February, GHS provides a day for juniors to take the ACT. This is different then when I was in high school and is a great opportunity for your students to take it.
3) This was a conflict last year for our juniors - I met with parents and students and they agreed to find a different testing site on a different day. You can look the sites up on ACT.org. There are a ton around us. It looks like the next available testing date after October is Dec 14th and several area schools host that (Maize, Maize South, Wichita Northwest HS, Friends U...etc).
4) If you and your student are determined to take the test on Oct 26, please communicate with me ASAP so we can come up with a plan for your student to possibly participate in the field show that evening (and so they can make up their points).
Neewollah is probably my favorite marching festival. This will be a really fun environment - I have core memories in high school performing in Independence and when I coached drumlines in college. We will try to work with families as much as we can while still encouraging the participation with us in Independence.

Hello,
Introduction
Hello! First of all, sorry for the typos found in this email. If we haven’t met, my name is Micah Bolton, director of bands at Goddard High School. This is my second year in the Goddard School District and I am excited to have another year of making music at GHS, GMS, and CHA. My favorite part of working in the district is collabortaing with all of the music educators in the Goddard area! I am a graduate of Friends University - I studied percussion with Andrew Slater there and previously with Kansas Music Hall of Fame's Dean Kranzler in Salina, KS. Currently, I have a small studio of 15 private percussion students who continue to amaze me with their dedication and drive to not be mediocre. This is especially important to me as it seems we live in a world of mediocrity. You can find me playing in the Wichita Wind Symphony, Stan Kenton Christmas Brass, and all over the area for musicals and other gigs I have time for.
My teaching style and philosophy were heavily influenced by Dr. Milton Allen, who flew back to Kansas to work with our students last year. I also had the privlege of being mentored by Dr. Shawn Knopp of Friends University. I'm thankful for all the support and resources Dr. Knopp has given me. His focus on building positive relationships with students through excellence in music education is what inspires and encourages me to continue teaching. I am excited for the opportunity to work with students 5-12 in Goddard this year and I look forward to meeting you soon if I haven’t yet.
Just a disclaimer: I am human - I will fail (after all, a failure is just a First Attempt In Learning), but I am here to help you and your student in any way I can, while holding them up to a high standard. I will never not be prepared to teach your student how to create music at a high level, I just won't live at work. That being said, I turn off my notifications for every form of commincation after 3:30PM everday so that I can spend time with my wife, my family, and my friends. My mentor teachers showed me how important that is.
Handbook Overview
Your student's first assignment is due this upcoming Monday (8/19/24) by 7AM. Please review the handbook with your student and submit your digital signature to complete this assignment. Compliance with the handbook is required for your student to particiapte in this course. It hasn't changed since this past year. A few main points:
Your student can make up points for excused absences (rehearsals, performances...etc.)
Your student cannot make up points for unexcused absences
Your student may lose points for tardiness
Your student is graded for meeting uniform requirements
Your student must communicate schedule conflicts at least 2 months in advance in order to make up points for a missed performance
2 months (or more) prior notice, 100% of the points may be made-up.
8 weeks prior notice, 90% of the points may be made-up.
6 weeks prior notice, 75% of the points may be made-up.
4 weeks prior notice, 50% of the points may be made-up.
2 weeks prior notice, 25% of the points may be made-up.
No make-up will be allowed with less than two weeks notice.
We reviewed the program expectations in class, please make sure you review this information with your student!
Note: these expecations were modeled after our GHS Fine Arts expectations and are based on expectations of band programs found in our state and nation.
Assignments & Playing Tests
I just want you to be aware as a parent, my expectations on student performance has not changed since last year. If students are not meeting Kansas or national musical standards as a band or as a section (example: if the flutes cannot play a scale in a piece), I may assign assignments/playing tests to make sure students are still practicing and striving for excellence. Again, this is not uncommon in our state or our nation in performing ensembles.
Submissions for our first scheduled assignment for band this year opens on October 1st - chair auditions!

The Mane Event
Our first performance is upon us. Our athletic director has graciously invited us to be apart of the Mane Event! Call time is 5:30PM in the band room ready to play. Student athletes need to communicate their plan for the evening with Mr. Bolton ASAP. At 5:55PM, the band will play our fight song and the Star Spangeled Banner before the HS Scrimmage. We should be finished by 6:10PM. At 6:20PM, the band staff will be home. Uniform for this performance is your grey pep band shirt. If you are required to wear another shirt/uniform for your activity, please wear that! If you see Mr. Buchanan, please thank him for including us in this special night!

Pre-festival Concert
Our Pre-Festival concert is on April 5th and will start at 6:30pm. Call time is 6:00pm. Dress is our concert black (either your concert dress or concert black with your tux jacket). Reminder: BLACK, long socks with black dress shoes is expected for concert dress. We will be performing our two pieces for State Large Group in conjunction with the GHS orchestra.
Regional Solo & Small Ensemble
We have multiple woodwind, brass, and percussion ensembles and solos competing at the KSHSAA regional solo and ensemble festival on Saturday, April 6th. This year it will be held at Andover High School. Performance times can be found on the attached pdf. Students will need to ride the bus that will leave GHS at 7am the morning of the 6th. A parent can also drive a student to and from the event as long as it is communicated to and "okayed" by the band director.
If these students receive a "I" superior rating, they will perform at KSHSAA state solo and ensemble festival at Salina South High School on April 27th.
State Large Group
The Symphonic Band will be performing at KSHSAA State Large Group competition at Wichita East High School on April 17th. Times will be released once the host releases them!
MASS Band Concert
Our 5th-12th grade Mass Band Concert will be on April 29th at GHS! Dress is concert black for 7-12 groups. 5-6 groups wear nice clothes (no jeans & appropriate dresses). Call is 6:45pm for the 7:00pm concert!

Want some beautiful spring flowers? GIMB is selling flats and hanging baskets for $25 to help fundraise for individual accounts to pay for trips and fees. Flowers are supplied by Brady Nursery. Middle School & High School Concert -Tuesday!
Get excited for our concert this Tuesday, February 6th. Our concert, Unraveling, will feature the Goddard Middle School Concert Band and our GHS Symphonic Band. This concert will also be a great way for 7th and 8th grade band members to see our high performing GHS ensemble in action before they finish their enrollment. The concert will consist of pieces by Andrew Boysen Jr., Frank Ticheli, Alan Silvestri, Andrew David Perkins, Charles Parker, and Michael Sweeney. The concert will take place at 7:00pm in the GMS Gymnasium.
As the students already know, the high school band will be dressed and ready to soundcheck in the GMS Gym at 6:30pm. Students can pick up their dresses/tuxes after school on Monday or Tuesday. Note, the middle school call time is 6:45pm.

Dr. Allen to Goddard for Clinics & Band Program Evaluation
If you remember my first email, I was mentored and influenced at my first university by Dr. Milt Allen - a musician, educator, and advocator.
Dr. Milt Allen has worked with hundreds of schools and thousands of students, directors and community members during his career. He is often credited as being one of the most creative, innovative, inspiring and non-traditional music educators today. Conductor, clinician, speaker, author and tireless advocate on behalf of music education, his passion for reaching more musicians at a grass-roots level drove him to leave a 26-year career in education, including 17 years in the public school, to step outside the traditional rehearsal room to create The Music Guerrilla, allowing him – and eventually others – to harness the power of music through whatever avenues available. In so doing, “Doc” is also able to create a means to reach out to programs in need, as well as partnering with music programs in third-world countries.
Milt’s articles and insights have appeared in music, parenting and educational magazines as well as various newspapers, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Los Angels Times and the Chicago Tribune. He is also the author of Music, Artistry, and Education: A Journey Towards Musical Growth and Enlightenment, published by Meredith Music Publications/Hal Leonard. Dr. Allen’s online venture: “Milt’s Music Minute,” continues to gain in popularity, providing quick information and helpful hints for both music directors and parents.
Ensembles under Doc’s direction have received numerous awards at local, state and national levels including recognition by the United States Congress for Musical Excellence. He is a two-time high school Teacher of the Year, a Kansas Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist, and is listed in various Who’s Who publications. Other honors and distinctions include 5 awards from the Ohio State University School of Music recognizing his teaching and service and selection as a Conducting Fellow for the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s 40th Anniversary. In 2008, Dr. Allen became the first civilian in the history of the United States Air Force to tour as a featured conductor (USAF Heritage of America Band) and received an Eastern Illinois University Achievement and Contribution Award.
All this said, I applied for a grant to bring "Doc" to our schools earlier this year for free - and it was approved! Dr. Allen will spend February 28th traveling and clinician our band 5th grade-12th grade and will also be evaluating and giving direction to our program as a whole. If you run into Milt, please thank him and give him a warm welcome to Goddard, KS - I told him I'd take him out for some local coffee.
This appearance of Jupiter Affiliated Educator Dr. Milt Allen has been made possible, in part, through an educational grant from the KHS America Academic Alliance. Dr. Allen highly recommends the quality instruments offered by Jupiter, Mapex, Majestic, XO, Azumi, and Altus, as well as Hercules stands.

Thank you band parents, guardians, and students for participating in a program that is unlike anything you will ever do again in your life. Statistically, when a new band director takes over a program, a mass amount of students tend to drop out. Why? Because it is an easy time to. As this thought might cross your student's mind I'll remind you again - being a part of a music program in school is something that your student may never experience again. If you were in high school band, you understand this completely! :) I won't go into the details about how band is "math", band is "science", band is "reading"...etc. in this email. Beyond all of the educational positives to being enrolled in a music class, music is something that changes humans down to their core and can give them an enlightened view on the world around them. If you have the chance, please sit down and discuss your student's enrollment plan for the next year. If you need anything at all, please let Mr. Richey or I know. Thank you for encouraging and investing in your student's musical journey.
February Concert Date Change!!
Parents and students. I am very sorry for this last minute change. The high school band concert originally scheduled for the beginning of February will be moved to February 6th (to be played with the GMS students). This is due to our venue backing out. It will also be a great way for 7th and 8th grade band members to see our high performing GHS ensemble in action.
This concert was added when I received my position at GHS because educationally, our students don't need to work on only their two pieces for contest for 4 months and musical growth is pushed to happen because of performing. Come to hear some beautiful pieces of music, band classics... and some weird new band music. :)
Wichita Wind Symphony Concert
Mr. Richey and I (along with the band directors from EHS) have seats in the Wichita Wind Symphony - Wichita's ONLY professional wind ensemble. This ensemble was founded and began giving concerts in May and have given a few concerts throughout the last half of 2023 and has a performance on January 13th at 7:30pm in Miller Concert Hall at WSU. This would be a great opportunity to hear a professional "band" for free! No tickets necessary.

Last Saturday we hosted District KMEA auditions for concert band at Goddard High School. Thank you to all the parent and student volunteers who made the event run quickly and smoothly! USD 265 Marching Showcase (parent performance)
We are so excited to be a part of a new Goddard, KS tradition - the USD 265 Marching Showcase. School districts all over the state host events that include all marching programs to celebrate the creation and collaboration of making music. I approached Mr. Brown at Eisenhower HS when I accepted my position at GHS and we are really excited to make this dream a reality! The night will open with the playing of our national anthem performed by both schools followed by a run of the EHS show, then GHS show. After this one parent will be allowed to the field to "shadow march" their child's dot. EHS will have a parent run through followed by GHS. We are looking forward to the event. Students will be in full uniform.
Schedule:
6:00 - call for GHS band students. (get into uniform)
6:15 - quick warmup
6:30 - rehearse national anthem with Eisenhower in GHS main gym.
7:00 - Star Spangled Banner!
November 3rd, KSU Symphony Orchestra
November 3rd, from 10:45-11:15. Students from the band and orchestra will be watching the KSU Symphony Orchestra in the auditorium at GHS! We are thrilled to host a college ensemble from outside of the Wichita area that performs at a high level. Last year I had the chance to watch some of my friends play in this group at KMEA - our students are in for a treat!

Our fundraiser started yesterday and was announced to band students at GMS and Challenger. Unfortunately I neglected to mention it to GHS band students but will do that tomorrow. Forms can be found on our website or can be picked up in the band room. All orders are due November 1st.

Central States Marching Festival (tomorrow!)
Our second festival is Saturday, October 14th - Central States Marching Festival hosted at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, KS. We perform at 6:15pm. Below is the schedule for the day. Call time is 9:15 for percussion and 10:00 for the rest of the band. The policy last year for XC members was that they were expected to find a ride to participate in marching festivals that occurred on the same day as meets. We will be following the same procedure for this competition if you are a Junior taking the PSAT or a student athlete involved in a similar situation.

Our final festival is Wednesday, October 25th in Andover, Kansas. Our performance is at 1:15 if you are interested in attending!

Chair Auditions
Last weekend, I posted about chair auditions on remind, google classroom, flip, the website... everywhere! This are required for ALL band members (minus guard who don't play with band during concert season) and is for a grade in the gradebook. The chair audition process is for me to properly seat the band, with the part best to contribute to the ensemble. The music is taken directly from the repertoire we will perform at the GHS Winter Wonderland Concert. Auditions are open now to post to flip now and are due for a grade by the end of the day on October 24th.
Only Mr. Richey and myself can view the flip videos - please post under the correct channel.
Jazz + Jazz Combos Concert!
The jazz band is playing before the Orchestra/MS Band Concert on Tuesday the 17th! Their call is 6pm, show at 6:15pm. Come out and listen to some great tunes provided by the full ensemble and three jazz combos.
Senior Night = Food!
Call time for the football game on Oct 20th is 5:30! Your fall fees paid for a meal this night so make sure your student is on time for their grade and to enjoy some Chick-Fil-A!

Homecoming Football Game
Our 3rd football game is September 29th. Here is important information for you/your student to know.

Homecoming looks a tad different. We will march out at 6:15pm so the band can watch their classmates' crowning and then we will continue with normal pre-game procedures. Check out the tardiness grading policy for football games if you or your student are confused why they lost points last game. :)

Air Capital Marching Invitational
Our first competition is this weekend - the second annual Air Capital Marching Invitational at Wichita Heights High School! We are the first band performing at 1:30pm - admission is $10 for spectators. Below is the schedule that was sent out last week. To compete with larger programs (who have band camp from May until August) we must have additional rehearsals outside of school. Here we learn choreography, a mass amount of sets, and occasionally music. It is important for your student to be in attendance at these rehearsals. We have an upcoming Saturday rehearsal on 9/23. This rehearsal will be graded and is a week before our first marching competition. Depending on performance and the amount of student attendance - the following Monday Night Rehearsal has the potential of being removed from the schedule.

Chicago is happening for our high school band and orchestra!
Mr. Richey sent the following email yesterday,
"We spoke with our trip coordinator and here is what is happening with Chicago. We are NOT cancelling, we are proceeding as planned with a few changes. What concerns parents is that the cost is not projected to change. At this time, registration is closed- if you or your student has pending registration, you will be contacted so we can get it completed."

Saturday Rehearsal (8am-11am on 9/23/23)
We have an upcoming Saturday rehearsal on 9/23. This rehearsal will be graded and is a week before our first marching competition. Depending on performance and the amount of student attendance - the following Monday Night Rehearsal has the potential of being removed from the schedule.
Fundraisers
We currently have two fundraisers progressing as an instrumental department at GHS. Money from the fundraisers can be used for trip payments, fall fee payments, apparel payments, private lessons, and more.

Color Guard is more than welcome to attend this trip – even though it is second semester and the majority of the group will not be enrolled in band.

Monday Night Rehearsals (MNR) occur Monday nights from 6:00-8:30PM! This is for a grade. To compete with larger programs (who have band camp from May until August) we must have additional rehearsals outside of school. Here we learn choreography, a mass amount of sets, and occasionally music. It is important for your student to be in attendance at these rehearsals. Assignments
We are doing overall an okay job at getting things done! The handbook receipt was due today - I will be running by the school one more time to check at 3:00pm for any lingering handbooks. The receipt serves as a contract between the directors, the parents, and the students involved in the band program. By signing, you are letting us know: you and your student understand class expectations (procedures and grading policies), you and your student understand and have marked dates on your family calendars, and that band is a year long commitment as a course.
We are missing about 40 handbook receipts. Everyday late, your student will loose 5% of the grade available for this course (Monday = 1 day late (9.5/10), Tuesday = 2 days late (9/10)...etc.). This is to make sure you and your student know our expectations for class and have all of the dates put on your calendar so their grade is not affected.
Students have an intro assignment due on Monday, turned in through FLIP. Your student can get access this app through the band website if needed.

I can’t express enough how much I appreciate every parent who came out and volunteered their time and resources during band camp. From hemming pants in the hallway, to running the shade tent, to fitting our students for uniforms… Thank you!!

Good evening band families!
Brief Introduction
Hello! If we haven’t met, my name is Micah Bolton - the new director of bands at Goddard High School. I’ll keep it brief so you get the important information. A little background on me: I am an Eagle Scout and proud former high school Student Council member. I am a recent graduate of Friends University - I studied percussion with Andrew Slater there and previously with Dean Kranzler in Salina, KS. My teaching style and philosophy were heavily influenced by Dr. Millton Allen. His focus was on building positive relationships with students through music education. I am excited for the opportunity to work with students 5-12 in Goddard this year and I look forward to meeting you soon if I haven’t yet.
In addition to taking over a high school band program, I am also getting married this weekend! I also just moved into my new home….! This season of life is certainly filled with excitement, however, I also am asking for some grace throughout this period. I am human - I will fail (after all, a failure is just a First Attempt In Learning), but I am here to help you and your student in any way I can. Additionally, sorry for the typos that may be in this email.
