Cultural Evolution in the Biology Classroom
Poster Presented at the Inaugural Conference of the Cultural Evolution Society, September 13-15, 2017, Jena, Germany.
Cultural evolution science is generally far off the radar from biology education and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), yet advances in this field may offer important educational innovations. This poster and extended overview outline the need for a flexible educational design concept for translating scientific advances into pedagogical practice. It is suggested that a long-term international collaboration using a Design-Based Research framework can drive the development and evaluation of a diversity of methods for engaging students in the behavioral dimensions of sustainability issues, through a focus on human science research, computer-based simulations, the everyday experience of student life, and the evolutionary-developmental context that shapes human universalities and diversity.
