COP27 Lesson 4
What is the COP26?
What is the COP26?
From one of the oldest activists? -
David Attenborough
HOPE lies in COP27 but what exactly is the COP27?......
Perhaps there are those in class with some idea before we go one to explain.... a little more...
It's not easy to describe.. but this video does a good job....(Even though it was made or COP26)
So what did you learn from the video above......
And what was left out....
COP = Conference of the Parties
A conference is a large meeting and a Party refers to a country. We need 190 parties and their negotiating teams to attend COP27.
And 27 refers to the 27th Climate meeting since the first such meeting in Rio De Janeiro "Earth Summit" in Brazil in1992 when we first decided that we had to come together to consider climate action...
In 2015 at COP21 in Paris, every country agreed to limit their countries Carbon Dioxide emissions to keep the world temperature to below 1.5C.
But are we on track to achieve this necessary target? Yes or No.... What do you think? Tell us.....
NO is the correct answer. We are not on target and so we are meeting again at COP26 to set new targets and time limits but we need to stick to them....
BUT
We can only move slowly....
We can't stop using coal, oil and gas today. We must change gradually.
We must change the way we farm but again we must make the changes gradually.
We must work towards achieving the SDGs, but this can't be done overnight. It can only be done gradually.
We can only move to electric vehicles gradually.
We can only switch to renewable energy gradually.
We can only begin the process of insulating older homes gradually.
Making big changes takes time.....
This idea of changing gradually is also known as a Just Transition
Have a look at the video below. It shows the Just Transition from coal in Germany to a safer, more environmentally friendly and climate friendly way of creating power.
Importantly we must make this Just Transition together!
It's not good enough just for a few countries to make changes or make this Just Transition to a better way of minding our planet by taking care during this Climate Emergency. We must all make these changes and soon and together. We must do more than Leave No One Behind. We must help the countries most in need as we reach the furthest behind first...
What do we mean by "reaching the furthest behind first".....
So who exactly is furthest behind.....
Lets us consider some of the Small Island Developing States... also known as SIDS
Small Island Developing States
UN MEMBERS (38) Here is the list
Any rise in Sea-Level arising from Climate Change will affect them first and immediately leaving them with no homes.
What issues face Small Island Developing States?
At the forefront of climate Change
Those living there are often poor.
Biodiversity is often threatened.
Those who live there are very dependent on the sea for a living. Coral Reefs are dying as the sea heats up.
Exploitation by other countries for their natural resources.
We need to respect and listen to the "Indigenous People" (sometimes called the first peoples) as they are the caretakers of the land. (What are indigenous peoples, examples... and what knowledge might they have..
Many have suffered badly with Coronavirus.
BUT THERE IS TIME TO CHANGE IT - TO MAKE IT BETTER.
