COP27 Lesson 3
Climate and Extreme Poverty
Climate and Extreme Poverty
Every year we are reminded by the United Nations to remember October 17th - The United Nations Day for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty. This is an important day because it can be very easy to forget that we are actually really well - off in comparison to others.... Have a look at the video below..... it might help to explain a little more about EXTREME Poverty
Even President Higgins gets involved. He's very well respected around the world and many listen to him and so this is why we're glad when he speaks up for others who may not have as strong a voice. See if you can understand what he's talking about here......
One of the reasons that President Higgins speaks out is because he is a Climate Activist - He wants all in power to listen to the science and make the hard choices that we need to make in order to keep our planet healthy and our climate in check. We must do this especially for those who are poorest.
How and why does Climate Change affect the poorest the most?
Have a look at the video below and see for yourself.
The poorest people on the planet do least to cause our climate problem but will suffer most and suffer first from the effects of climate change.
We need to think about this statement and what it means....
A good place to start maybe to look back at the SDGs and in particular SDG #1 No Poverty
The SDGs are also called the Global Goals or The World's To Do List.
Every country signed up to try to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs in Sept 2015. We promised to do this by 2030. There are only 9 years left. Each goal is linked to other goals (Check this out..)
The Goals can be divided into three different groups
Society
Environment
Economy
See if you can figure out which goal goes into which grouping above... 1, 2, or 3.
The Answer can be found further down the page....
What does it mean to Leave No One Behind?
What does it mean to reach the furthest behind first?
To learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs You can look back at our others lessons here
What is SDG #13? And why is it so important?
Answer to which SDGs belong to which grouping as asked above....
Earlier we mentioned hard choices that have to be made by all. What hard choices do we have to make to keep our climate in check?
Have you heard of renewable energy? Tell me more......
DO's
Wind Power
Solar Power
Home Insulation
Electric Cars
Don'ts
No More drilling for oil
No More Burning Coal / Peat to generate electricty.
No more clearing Forests
Can you think of other things we should do or don't do to mind our climate. Minding our climate is one way of looking after the poorest people on the planet?
BUT THERE IS TIME TO CHANGE IT - TO MAKE IT BETTER.
