The Global Citizen Movement is a student-led initiative based in Osaka, Japan. It began as part of the "Globalship Challenge," a program organized by the Junior Chamber International Osaka. Inspired by its mission, a group of university students in Osaka came together to promote the idea of becoming a “Global Citizen”—someone who strives for world peace and embraces diverse values and perspectives.
Our movement starts with us: we aim to become Global Citizens ourselves, and ultimately invite all 8 billion people around the world to join us in becoming Global Citizens.
Have you ever heard the term “Global Citizen” or “Earth Citizen”?
A Global Citizen is someone who sees themselves as part of a broader global community—someone who interacts with others beyond the boundaries of nationality, culture, or ethnicity, recognizing our shared humanity.
In today’s world, we face increasingly complex international issues and deeply rooted differences in values. Conflicts driven by national, religious, or ethnic identities continue to divide people across the globe.
The idea of being a Global Citizen means putting humanity first—before nationality, religion, or ethnicity—and recognizing that we all share the same planet. It is a mindset that embraces coexistence, understanding, and responsibility as fellow human beings living together on Earth.
To share the concept and values of being a “Global Citizen” with the world, we created the Global Citizen Mark as a symbol of our movement.
The design reflects our core message: by arranging the world’s major languages in a circular pattern, we express diversity and solidarity. The phrase “GLOBAL CITIZEN” is colored using the SDGs color palette, representing our commitment to tackling global issues—not as someone else's problems, but as challenges we must face together.
This mark serves as a reminder and a switch—to turn on our awareness as Global Citizens and take action as individuals who care about the world.
Why not take this opportunity to become a Global Citizen yourself?
Through our visit to the Expo and the mosque, we felt that the people we met there are not beings with whom we need to build walls like the ones we sometimes create within ourselves. There, we experienced a broadening of values and open, barrier-free dialogue between individuals living together as human beings on a one-to-one level.
Rather than an “interaction” where identity is subconsciously kept in mind, we believe that if each person around the world could engage in a truly “friendly” communication—one based on mutual understanding—we could move closer to a world where relationships are opened up more deeply and sincerely.

Our Stories
Through this activity, I began to notice that everyday things I once took for granted—such as TV programs, news reports, and politicians’ street speeches—often lack the perspective of a Global Citizen. For example, when I hear words or expressions that assume only Japanese people as the audience, I wonder how people from overseas might feel.
Moreover, through fieldwork, I realized that I myself had unconsciously been trapped by stereotypes. When I started interacting with people without putting them into boxes like “Japanese” or “speakers of a certain language,” I naturally made more friends and felt freer in my own thinking. From now on, I want to increase the number of Global Citizens around me, starting with my local community, and help spread a better world from Japan.
When I arrived in Japan and struggled to communicate in Japanese while signing up for a mobile phone contract, I first truly felt the importance of global citizenship. The store clerk reassured me that even without a shared language, we could connect as human beings.
Through this experience, I realized that being a Global Citizen means finding common ground and cherishing our shared humanity.
After returning from studying abroad, I felt strong discomfort during casual conversations with friends when I heard remarks that stereotyped people by nationality or culture—seeing people not as individuals but lumped together by race.
Through this activity, I want to increase awareness and encourage more people to interact with others as individuals, rather than categorizing them by nationality or other labels.
