The Glass Recycling Network (GRN) is an entirely student-run organization that was founded by Corinne and Caroline Sieber in the wake of Fairfax County's 2019 curbside glass recycling policies.
Through the help of student volunteers, the network picks up curbside glass bottles left out by neighborhood residents and recycles them at the "Purple Bins" stationed across the county.
Our organization has been able to save over 160,000 glass bottles from the landfill and service over 800 neighborhood residents across Fairfax County.
Fairfax County stopped recycling glass in bulk curbside recycling in 2019. The county expects residents to either stop purchasing glass containers (which are way better to use than plastic), reuse glass containers, or transport unwanted glass containers to one of 24 Purple Glass Recycling bins placed throughout Northern Virginia.
None of these options are very practical for most households in our community, and we want to do what we can to ensure that glass products are not being thrown into landfills. Thus, the GRN personally picks up and recycles curbside glass in the stead of county collectors.
Glass placed in the purple bins are recycled by being crushed and used locally for many creative purposes such as fill at construction sites, road repair, insulation, and even as landscaping!
Reduce unnecessary waste.
Make use of valuable glass.
Provide a convenient service for community residents.
Make our neighborhoods cleaner and greener.
Inspire change, one bottle at a time!
If you'd like to have your unwanted glass picked up for recycling, put your glass on your curb when it is your zone's assigned day for our pick up.
