I would say this is a 4-star product, but compared to other alarms, this should not be an accessory. It should come w/ the alarm period. But it doesn't, so I had to add it on. You need the glass sensor. Picks up "glass" sounds, and also "shaking key" sounds. Great add-on. Must have.

So Wyze said glass break sensors were being worked on, and a Wyze employee was asked about making this work with Wyze cams to have the AI detect it, and they said they would bring it up with the AI team and that it might already be in the works. Now we get an email saying that the cams are capable of doing this.

A mashup of several glass breaking sounds obtained from this site. I needed such a sound for a play I was working on in 2014, and no single sound I found really captured the feeling I wanted, so I merged a bunch of them. The sources are as follows:

Yes, but this is harder than you might think. To do it reliably for a science demonstration requires practice and careful choice of the glass and loudspeaker. It is quite nerve racking doing this live on stage, because it sometimes takes a bit of fiddling and tuning to work. This is great for building tension in the audience!

With the meteoric rise of embedded machine learning hardware and algorithms, glass window break detectors are becoming an increasingly common component of complete security systems for both commercial and residential buildings. These devices are designed to detect the sound of breaking glass and alert the owner of the property of a potential intruder.

If you think that these problems sound suspiciously like they could be remedied with better algorithms and sensors, then you are not alone. The engineering team at Zalmotek had the same thought, and decided to put their soldering irons where their mouths are (figuratively speaking, of course!) and design a better glass break detection system. And with the help of a powerful IoT prototyping platform and Edge Impulse Studio, it was quite a bit simpler to build than you might expect.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, Zalmotek first needed to collect an audio dataset to train the model and understand how well it would perform. Breaking a lot of glass is probably not something that most people want to do. Zalmotek certainly did not, so fortunately, they were able to locate a few preexisting datasets that were publicly available and extract about 15 minutes worth of samples of breaking glass sounds. A background sound dataset was similarly acquired, and consisted of common noises like car horn honks, people talking loudly, and doors closing. The entire dataset was then uploaded to an Edge Impulse Studio project for further analysis.

Within the project, an impulse was created, which defines the flow of data all the way from the sensor to the final result. This impulse started with a preprocessing step that splits audio samples into one second segments, then another step that calculates and extracts the most informative features from the data. This not only produces a more accurate end result, but it also reduces the amount of downstream computational resources that are needed, which is critical when working on constrained hardware platforms. Finally, the features were forwarded into a neural network classifier that was configured to distinguish between the sound of breaking glass and normal background sounds.

In the above scene from Breaking Bad, we hear a single, light glass tapping sound as the character prepares to throw his glass beaker. When it makes contact with the wall, the sound effect is louder and longer than it would be in real life. The pull-down map of the periodic table rolls back up suddenly and smacks against its holding case, extending the length of the impact and contributing to the dramatic effect.

Above we find a scene from the 1983 film A Christmas Story. The main character tries to shoot a rifle and knocks his glasses off into the snow. As he walks carefully and looks for find them, we can hear the gentle crunch of snow under his boots. In a brilliant moment of sound design, we hear a much louder and textural crunching sound when he steps on his reading glasses. It marks a moment of loss for him that harkens back to a similar, iconic scene from Lord of the Flies.

Notice how the initial impact sound of shattered glass is followed by the shuffling of mirror shards across the floor. The audience perceives the delicate tinkling sound as an immediate threat, knowing that these sharp pieces of glass could injure the characters.

The isolated sound of glass breaking rarely conveys the drama or intensity of a specific scene. Layering and combining it with other effects, like the deep thud of an impact or the echoing reverb of a large space, can intensify the experience.

An action sequence where the character flies through a window will include a whoosh sound prior to impact, a shattered glass sound, a deep impact thud sound as their body hits the floor, and a final scattering of glass as they slide across the floor. This layered approach to audio sequencing creates a more immersive and cinematic moment.

ST does not have a device capability defined for a glass break sensor. Even if it had, I would add the contact sensor capability to the device type because its function is similar to a contact sensor to protect the peripheral. If it would function like a contact sensor device, most standard apps would work with it. If the device would only have a dedicated glass break capability, you would need custom SmartApps to support it.

In order to test one of your glass break sensors, start by putting your system on test mode with the central station. Next, pull up the YouTube clip on your phone, and set your phone's volume to its highest setting. Then play the clip in its entirety while you are within the detection range of your glass break sensor. If successful, the sensor will send an alert to the control panel to let it know that it has been activated.
