glaive is an artist who began making music at the beginning of the pandemic and uploaded his first song to SoundCloud in April 2020. He's also Ash Gutierrez, a 16-year-old high school student growing up in North Carolina. Two months later, he was noticed and picked up by his now manager Daniel Awad. Awad recalls being impressed by the teen's songwriting and potential. Shortly after, glaive signed a record deal with Interscope.
A year later, glaive has been featured on Billboard's 21 under 21 list, amassed over 1,000,000 monthly listeners, and earned over 15,000,000 streams on his single, 'astrid'. Many have seen his face on the cover of Spotify's curated playlist for "hyperpop", a new genre that has entered to share some limelight with the return of pop-punk and emo influences. This playlist presently has over 240,000 likes. Hyperpop is best represented in the mainstream world by artists such as 100 gecs, SOPHIE, and Charli XCX, but many were happy to recognize glaive as the new leader for the sound. His own style has been described as a "playful, pixelated blend of trap, emo, and pop," and "laden with hooks, counterbalancing breezy verses [and] a chorus that crushes once the dissonant beat comes in."
Despite the youth of his career (and himself) glaive is intent on representing his own artistry and goals with his music and not attaching his reputation to any genre, let alone the unknown landscape of hyperpop. Even after sharing news of his studio time with blink-182 drummer and producer Travis Barker, he made sure to not give in to the pop-punk style Barker and fellow artist Machine Gun Kelly have dominated in 2021.
As the live music industry resurges with vaccinated and/or masked fans at venues, glaive is finally able to take the music he released throughout quarantine to the stage. His first performance took place on August 20th, 2021 at Lyrical Lemonade's hip hop festival, Summer Smash, in Chicago. There, he relished in his performance by jumping into the crowd during his beloved song 'astrid' and truly connected to his audience. The young talent had received support from Lyrical Lemonade early on and the founder, Cole Bennett, later directed the music video for '1984', the first track of glaive's sophomore EP all dogs go to heaven.
While glaive intends to finish out his high school degree, he's committed to doing what he wants to do every day and taking his music as far as it can go. As 2021 comes to an end, this has meant releasing and touring his latest joint EP then i'll be happy with best friend and collaborator, ericdoa.
